June 22, 1962, New Orleans, LA NBA Career statistics A member of the famed "Phi Slamma Jamma" team at the University of Houston, the 6-foot-7, 222-pound Drexler averaged 14.4 points a game in his three-year career there. He left school after his junior to enter the NBA draft pool in 1983 and was chosen in the first round by the Portland Trail Blazers. He was a part-time player as a rookie and became a starting guard in his second season, 1984/85. Drexler suddenly blossomed as a scorer in 1987/88, when he averaged 27.0 points a game. Very fast and agile despite his size, Drexler is a master on the fast break and also has a good outside shot. Named to the All-NBA third team in 1990 and to the second team in 1988 and 1991, Drexler was a first team selection in 1992, when he averaged 25.0 points a game. He missed much of the 1992/93 season with a back injury. Through 1993, he had scored 15,833 points in 578 regular season games, a 20.9 average, and he also had 1,623 steals, 4,392 assists, and 4,660 rebounds. I take it all back, we can win ... with Clyde Erik Williams I started this piece about two weeks ago when UH basketball, as a whole, was in a complete mess. We all know the story about the men's team, the dismissal of Alvin Brooks and the possibility of the school's three top recruits jumping ship. That's old and tired news. But, the women's basketball situation was even more complicated. With no warning whatsoever, Jessie Kenlaw resigned, wanting to "pursue new opportunities." Pursue new opportunities? That sounds like she was forced out. But in fact, after some research, I think she really did quit. As the search for a new coach continues, the effect of her resignation has been severe. There were a lot of rumors going around, but one of them suggested that Sharonda Lasseter, who was the Conference USA Freshman of the Year this season, has hinted that she is considering transferring because Kenlaw resigned. There was even some speculation two weeks ago that Kenlaw was even attempting to recall her resignation due to Title IX infractions, but it was all dismissed as hearsay. Before I go on, I have to pause to commend the women's team. After covering its games for the majority of the season, I just have to give them all the credit in the world for playing with so much heart and determination this year.

But what Clyde really wants to do is to restore his alma mater to basketball glory, so he's taking on the challenge of coaching the University of Houston Cougars. Houston responded as one to the announcement that Clyde was retiring from the Rockets to take on the coaching job at University of Houston. We might miss him on the court, but the choice was his well-earned prerogative. Clyde has long ago passed the threshold of Houston sports legends who can do no wrong, and his loyalty to his old school can only be commended. In fact, he may do the troubled U.H. basketball program some good. There are wheels within wheels; various blue-chip prospects are known to have soured on U.H. after the firing of coach Alvin Brooks; and Clyde is respected, even revered by new generation players - rightly so.
