Notes From A Basketball Junkie
Where HoopHeads Get Their Fix! Main September 18, 2002 So Long Pat, We Hardly Knew You... Patrick Ewing Retires After 17 Seasons Because you never gave us a chance to. How is that possible? Not only is New York City the media capital of the world but the Knicks are its most beloved sports franchise. Basketball season transforms New York City into the most immense bi-polar patient in the universe. Victories bring smiles to even the most bitter and cantankerous of New Yorkers while losses make gray March mornings drearier than a day at the most ragged of OTB parlors. The psychic energy given off by subway riders on the eve of a big game is so intense that one can't help but feel that every rider on your train is the Amazing Kreskin. That energy is matched only by the melancholy that grips the neighborhood dive following a loss. Perhaps, the only thing that compares to the rabidity of Knicks' fans is the unrelenting intensity of the media throughout the season. No missed shot, bungled rebound, or sarcastic aside by a Knick escapes this predatory wolf pack. Ravenous fans demand every last single morsel of info and the media try to please by turning the Knicks into a veritable reality show. At times, it seems as if only Harry Houdini, himself, would be able to evade this floodlight that is pointed at the Knicks every season. Somehow, number 33 did it. Patrick Ewing was the NBA's version of The Quiet Man. Both on the court and off. He survived life in the perpetual eye of the media storm that being the sole superstar on the New York Knicks entails through a combination of stoicism and inscrutable silence. His taciturn behavior off the court was complemented by his steady and even play on it. Ewing was all 15-foot jumpers from the wing and baby hooks in an era of dunks and three-pointers. There may not have been nor will there ever be a more unspectacular superstar in NBA history than Patrick Ewing. It is that consistency and steadiness that is the beauty of Patrick Ewing's career.

http://www.notebookmargins.com/mike/SmSports/Ewing.html
Changing NBA game, greatness passes Ewing By David Halberstam - March 2001 The other day we in New York had a small river of crocodile tears running through our sports world. The occasion was Patrick Ewing's return to New York for the first time since he was traded to Seattle in the offseason. Patrick Ewing's return to New York as a Sonic on Feb. 27 was overhyped and insincere. Not only was the occasion like so many others in sports overhyped, the idea being that this was an important event for serious New York sports fans and that the emotions on all sides would be powerful. But the candor displayed by the majority of sportswriters was of dubious authenticity. I realize the need for some kind of midseason hype the season is a long one, marked by endless patches of midwinter gray, and anything fresh to write about is to be seized upon. But I also happen to know what many of the sportswriters who contributed to the night of Ewing nostalgia think about Ewing and his game, and it is significantly less than how they wrote about both. Having been scorned a thousand times in postgame lockerroom interviews, in private, they are a great deal more scornful of him and the limitations of his game than they are in public. Nonetheless, there was an immense flurry of attention in all the local papers and on the local media, as if this game and this occasion truly mattered. The local media was simply desperate to find something to write about in a long season.

After 17 Years, Ewing Calls it Quits
by Ranya Saadawi
Ewing was drafted by the Knicks in 1985.
Seventeen years filled with All-NBA titles(7), trips to the All-Star Game(11), All-Defensive citations(3), a Rookie of the Year award, Conference Championships(2), and Olympic gold medals(2), is coming to an end. Patrick Ewing, best known for his fifteen years on the New York Knicks, has retired from basketball on September 17, 2002.
I’ll miss the rivalries we had with other teams. I’ll miss elbowing Alonzo and Dikembe in the head and talking about it afterward. Over the years, Ewing has seen players and coaches come and go, has played against people half his age, and yet has still flourished and led his team to victories. As a Knicks player for fifteen years, he dominated all the statistical records. His 24,815 points (13th on the all-time list), 2,894 blocks (fourth), and 11,607 rebounds brought the Knicks to thirteen consecutive Playoff appearance and seven years of ticket sellouts. Let’s not forget his moments of glory in the various playoff games. The 1992 “stay-alive” sixth game against Chicago, with 11 points in the fourth quarter and 27 throughout the game—all on a sprained ankle; the last-second finger roll against the Pacers in 1995; the numerous battles against Miami Heat, led by his friend Alonzo Mourning; and of course his one Finals appearance in 1994, when he had two chances to oust fellow big man phenom Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets, but saw his team collapse in games 6 and 7 to give up the title.

Ewing Returns Home
by Shant Stepanian
Ewing returns to New York Tuesday, February 27 is the big day all Knicks fan will look forward to, whether in a positive way or a negative way. That day, the Knicks will play at Madison Square Garden against the Seattle Supersonics. But what will be special about this game, as if no one knew this already, is the return of the Franchise, Patrick Ewing.
Ewing was a Knick for 15 storied years. HIs greatness was evident from the beginning, as he was Rookie of the Year in 1985. Through the 80s and early 90s, he was one of the most dominant centers of the league and cemented himself as a future Hall of Famer. He was not only the best player on the Knicks, he WAS the Knicks. Simply, when you thought Knicks, you thought Patrick Ewing.
Despite his great basketball career, Ewing was not the most liked star during many times of his career. He was seen as smug, aloof, and usually kept to himself from the media and sometimes his teammates. His attitude has caused many fans to remember his negatives: his many failed guarantees, his many missed game-winning shots, especially the missed finger-roll in Game 7 against Indiana, and his unwillingness later on in his career to share the ball. All of this added up to everyone in New York to demand Ewing's trade.
Many never thought they would see Ewing in another uniform, but it happened, when the Knicks, as a part of a mega-deal, sent Ewing to Seattle and received Glen Rice from L.A. This year, Ewing has struggled even more, as his age is quickly and horribly affecting his play.

(AP) As Patrick Ewing talked about his retirement, there was a softness in his eyes, a relaxed look replacing the glare he used while establishing himself as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.
Then Ewing saw old pal Charles Oakley in the back of the room and his eyes danced. "My hit man, Oak! We had some times, didn't we, Oak?" Ewing shouted from the podium. Indeed they did.
