Ewing ends Magic act;
Career could be over By FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Patrick Ewing It seems like only yesterday that Patrick Ewing was the franchise center who turned the Knicks into perennial contenders during the '90s. Now, Ewing is an aging center going through a serious mid-life crisis: he's 40 and out of work. Incredibly, the same player who commanded a $64 million contract six summers ago is now being paid not to play. Ewing and the Orlando Magic reached a buyout agreement yesterday that essentially makes Ewing a free agent. Ewing was scheduled to earn $2.33 million in the last year of his two-year deal with Orlando, but instead agreed to a buyout believed to be $1.6 million. "We found something that worked for both of us to bring this to a close," Magic GM John Gabriel said. "It allows him to pursue whatever opportunities suit him." Ewing, who has been working out regularly, is still debating whether to retire or return for an 18th season and play for a fourth team in four seasons. "I know he has been working out so it sounds like he wants to play," said a person close to Ewing. "But I don't know how much more he has left."

More headlines No. 49: PATRICK EWING Sill riding high Only title has eluded Ewing By Barbara Matson, Globe Staff There's no hiding for Patrick Ewing. But no broomstick could match his intensity on the basketball court. Ewing, No. 49 on the Globe's list of the top 100 New England sports figures of the century, could win a basketball game without scoring. As St. John's coach Lou Carnesecca once said, ''People alter their shot selection when they get near the basket, because in the back of their minds they're afraid Ewing is going to shove the ball back down their throats.'' Ewing's family moved to Cambridge from Kingston, Jamaica, when Ewing was a 5-11 12-year-old. He was introduced to basketball at Hoyt Park, and he stunk. The kids laughed at him, because he was awkward and he spoke with a Jamaican accent.

    Should Patrick Ewing Be A Number One Option?
    18 March, 1996
    Don Nelson, upon his leaving the New York Knicks, stated that Patrick Ewing should not be a number one offensive option if the Knicks are to compete to be champions. For a coach to say something like this is rare because loyalty is important in the league. Usually, a statement like this comes out of feeling betrayed, which Nelly may have been. However, there is also reason to think that Nelson said it out of an honest personal belief. Could it be true that Ewing should no longer be the first option for a winning team? First of all, we should define what a number one offensive option should do. Most first options in an offense are players who can score with a high probability. This means, using terminology of JoBS , that they have a high floor percentage, good enough to make an entire offense good perhaps better than average. This consists of two questions then. First, is Ewing's individual offense good? Second, is the Knicks' overall offense good because his offense is good? The answer to both these questions is no. No, Ewing's offense is not "good" right now. His floor percentage is just 0.502 this year and his offensive rating is just 98.5 (within the context of an average offense). No, the Knicks' team offense is not good either, with an offensive rating of 104.3, as of 3/10, with the league average at about 105.9. A quick and dirty answer like this shouldn't quite satisfy you. It doesn't satisfy me.

Go to the Forums or Chat By Hal Bock Associated Press NEW YORK Patrick Ewing retired from the NBA on Tuesday, ending the 17-year career of one of the league's greatest centers but leaving him short of his repeated promise to win a championship. Ewing, an 11-time All-Star who was chosen as one of the 50 best players in league history, spent 15 years with the New York Knicks, averaging 22.8 points and 10.4 rebounds. He was traded to Seattle before the 2000 season and then signed as a free agent with Orlando last year. The 40-year-old center finishes his NBA career with 24,815 points and 11,606 rebounds.
