Who will be crowned the best jazz station in the south?
WRVS-FM, the public radio station at Elizabeth City State University
in North Carolina has challenged WJSU-FM to see which
station can be the first to raise $25,000 during a joint on-air membership
drive. The winning station will then be declared "The Southern Region's
Best Jazz Station" As a loyal listener and member, WJSU recognizes that you share in our pride, commitment and service and therefore we are confident that you will not allow WJSU to play second fiddle to WRVS. The Listener Showdown 2000 Spring Challenge membership begins April 9, 2000 and will continue through April 16. To win the title outright, we will have to be the first station to raise $25,000. As a special thank you, WJSU has a extra gift in addition to the regular premiums for each membership level. WIth a basic membership and above, you will receive a very nice document bag.

Bulldog pitcher named SEC's top scholar-athlete For the fifth time this decade, a Mississippi State athlete has been singled out for top scholar-athlete honors in the Southeastern Conference.
Jackson Junior pitcher Jeremy Jackson of Meridian is the recipient of the SEC's H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for 1997-98. Jackson and University of South Carolina volleyball player Shani Abshier, the SEC's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, were selected for top league honors by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 12 SEC schools. Each athlete receives a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship. Jackson becomes the fifth Mississippi State athlete to receive the prestigious SEC Scholar-Athlete Award since 1990. Previous recipients have included Burke Masters (baseball, 1990), Aimee York (volleyball, 1993), Tammy Newlon (women's basketball, 1994), and April Ecke (cross-country, 1995). Jackson, who earned his fourth varsity letter in his third year as a starting pitcher, has posted a 22-7 overall career record at Mississippi State, and led the 1998 team with an 9-2 record (as of May 27). Jackson compiled a 9-4 record on Mississippi State's 1997 NCAA College World Series team, earning Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors after a career-best 15-strikeout game against top-ranked LSU. He was later selected by the New York Mets in the 1997 June draft.

Career Statistics Other Resources The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Jackson was an All-American guard as a junior at Ohio State University in 1992, when he was named college player of the year by United Press International. Jackson averaged 22.4 points that season and 19.2 for his three-year career. He then left school to enter the NBA draft and was chosen by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round. He held out for most of his rookie season, finally joining the team in March of 1993 and averaging 16.3 points in 28 games. Dallas sent him to the New Jersey Nets in a nine-player trade during the the 1996-97 season. That began an odyssey that has seen Jackson play for nine different teams in the span of seven seasons. He joined his ninth team, the Sacramento Kings, as a free agent at the beginning of the 2002-03 season. Jackson's best season, statistically, was 1994-95, when he averaged 25.7 points a game, fifth in the NBA and first among non-centers. However, an ankle injury in February cut that season short. Because of his size, Jackson has been a swing man for much of his NBA career, playing small forward as well as shooting guard.
