Still stunning the world 10 years later
By Tom Friend
ESPN The Magazine
He has made it to 42. He has made it to 260 pounds. He has made it to CEO. He has made it to father-of-three. He has made it to big-brother-of-Kobe. He has made it to seven rings. He has made it to 10 years. "A lot of people thought I would be dead," Earvin "Magic" Johnson says of his anniversary. Magic Johnson's retirement 10 years ago stunned the world, but it likely hit closest to home for so many athletes who have enjoyed the spoils of their success. They thought he had the plague, but today he has a pickup basketball game to play. They treated him like a leper, but today they watch movies in his theatre. They thought he would whither away, but today his shirt size is XXXL. They remember Nov. 7, 1991, like it was last Thursday. They remember where they were when they heard that sickening phrase: HIV. They remember weeping. They remember rationalizing. They remember thinking, "He must be gay." They remember thinking he'll be gone in two years. They remember thinking he'll shrivel up and deteriorate. Right in front of them. And they know who they are. Michael Jordan. Larry Bird. Pat Riley. Arsenio Hall. Isiah Thomas.

Magic, on Panel, Says AIDS Fight Belongs to All Los Angeles Times (LT) - WEDNESDAY January 15, 1992; Edition: Home Edition Page: 1 Pt. A Col. 4 Word Count: 914
MARLENE CIMONS; TIMES STAFF WRITER WASHINGTON - The message from Earvin (Magic) Johnson, the newest member of the National Commission on AIDS, was simple but eloquent: The battle against AIDS belongs to everyone. "We're all in this. It's not just Magic Johnson. It's everybody. Until everybody recognizes that, we're not going to win this battle. I'm not the only soldier here. . . . Magic Johnson cannot do this alone." The former Los Angeles Lakers guard, who retired from professional basketball last fall after his disclosure that he was infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, was attending his first meeting Tuesday as a member of the federal panel. Johnson, 32, was similarly direct in delivering an unsparing message to President Bush, who appointed him to the commission. He told Bush in a hand-delivered letter: "No matter how good the team may be, it won't win the championship without the owner fully in the game. I don't feel you've been there up until now." The commission advises Congress and the White House on a national strategy to combat the epidemic. Johnson replaced Belinda Mason, a journalist who died of AIDS last fall.

24 Hour Fitness and Magic Johnson Roll-out Second Bay Area and Sixth Joint Fitness Facility San Leandro, Calif., (February 18, 2003)- 24 Hour Fitness, the innovative leader in health and fitness, joined forces with basketball superstar Earvin "Magic" Johnson today to celebrate the grand re-opening of the sixth 24 Hour Fitness Magic Johnson Sport Club, the second club in the Bay Area. Located in the Bayfair Mall in San Leandro, Calif., this new concept club is a full service fitness facility born out of the partnership between Magic Johnson Enterprises and 24 Hour Fitness. Twenty years ago, 24 Hour Fitness put down roots in the San Leandro community when it opened its first club and began what is now a 300-club strong national fitness chain. In 1983, the San Leandro location had 1,500 members and eight full-time employees. Today, the 45,000 sq ft., club is nine times its original size and is one of only six Magic Johnson Sport Clubs in the 24 Hour Fitness family. "This club holds an important place in the hearts of the 24 Hour Fitness family," said Mark S. Mastrov, chairman and CEO, 24 Hour Fitness. "In a way, this community started the round-the-clock business trend when late-shift factory employees began showing up at 2:00 a.m. in the early '80s. Today, this club supports 2,000 workouts a day. To see it evolve into one of our new concept clubs is exciting."

The State News Despite the rain, Johnson and Starbucks Chief Executive Howard Schultz were on hand for the grand opening celebration of Starbucks, 401 E. Grand River Ave., which opened earlier this month. Johnson, a Lansing native who led MSU to the NCAA championship in 1979, became emotional when talking about opening the East Lansing store, pausing to compose himself while speaking. Schultz said he is excited about the store opening. Schultz praised Johnson for his work with Seattle-based Starbucks. JENNIFER JANKOWSKI
Besides helping Starbucks open in East Lansing, Johnson also donated his basketball jerseys from Lansing Everett High School, 3900 Stabler St., MSU and the Los Angeles Lakers for store display. This is the first time the three jerseys will be displayed in the same place. As Johnson unveiled the framed MSU championship jersey, the Spartan Marching Band broke out in the MSU fight song, to the cheers of the crowd. The crowd was filled with Johnson fans, who were not discouraged by the cold and the rain.

Instead, the basketball legend, AIDS activist and businessman gave some memories to a largely student audience of 2,000 who packed Bailey Hall and gave him a standing ovation when he entered. Sure, "Magic" Johnson helped the Los Angeles Lakers to five National Basketball Association championships and nine NBA finals appearances. Going one-on-one against the Isaiah Thomases, Moses Malones, Charles Barkleys, Larry Birds and Michael Jordans of his era, Johnson set a high standard of athletic excellence. But on Nov. 7, 1991, the high-flying, championship world of Magic seemed to come crashing down. "That was the hardest day of my life," Johnson told the sold-out Bailey Hall crowd Thursday evening. His doctor had summoned him to his office to give him some chilling news: Johnson had been diagnosed as being HIV positive. "After I got myself off the ground, I decided to get a positive attitude. There would be no stress in my life, I would take the medicine and do what the doctor told me to do," recalled Johnson.

Former world-champion basketball star and current LA business owner, EARVIN "MAGIC" JOHNSON hosted over 30,000 people for the event of the summer, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S MAGIC weekend. Not just about fun and games, this weekend raised money for the Magic Johnson Foundation’s Taylor Michaels Scholarship Programs, which this year awarded 97 scholarships to send youth to college.

A NBA All-Star game coached by the always country and always ghetto fabulous comedians STEVE HARVEY and BERNIE MAC followed the celeb exhibition. Steve’s red team had STEVE "The Reason" FRANCIS, MAGIC JOHNSON, GARY PAYTON, PAUL "Inglewood" PIERCE, JALEN ROSE among other young NBA ballers on it. Bernie’s blue team consisted of 2 LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS, DARIUS MILES and QUENTIN RICHARDSON, UCLA’s and now MILWAUKEE BUCK’s, BARON DAIVS, former LA Laker NICK "the quick" VAN EXEL, still an LA fan favorite, and another UCLA player, EARL WATSON. Despite what Bernie Mac called "trickeration" meaning funny business from the red team, his team defeated Magic’s team by 2 points.
Magic Johnson made the magnanimous step from basketball to business to community leader and plans on continuing a positive legacy to improve the quality of life for all in Los Angeles. This may work well for a possible run for mayor in 8 years, if necessary.

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) Basketball great Earvin "Magic" Johnson is getting back into the TV game after fouling out in 1998 with his talk show. Johnson said Wednesday he will produce and occasionally appear in the MTV reality show "Who's Got Game," documenting the lives of 12 street basketball players competing for fame and a $100,000 prize. Johnson said he's trying to play to his strengths as an athlete after the ill-advised attempt to be a comedian-interviewer on his own late-night talk show, which was pummeled by critics and canceled after two months. "This is what I'm all about: basketball. I grew up playing street basketball. I wasn't myself in 'The Magic Hour,"' said Johnson, who will visit neighborhoods in cities such as Washington, New York, Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles in the next two months scouting for contestants.
