62. Jones' Coaching Women's Team Is Step To Prove League Is Serious

Jones' coaching women's team is step to prove league is serious
OPINION: Fans can watch solid performances, not flashy shows like NBA Why in the world would K.C. Jones, a Hall of Famer and owner of 12 NBA championship rings, want to coach the New England Blizzard of the women's American Basketball League? After all, as head man of the Boston Celtics he coached Larry Bird and company to two titles and accumulated the all-time best winning percentage in professional basketball's most storied franchise. Is it the possibility of coaching another Bird, such as Kate Starbird, who recently signed with the league after winning the 1997 Naismith Award in her final year at Stanford? Probably not. Is it the money? Considering the fact that Rick Pitino will earn $70 million with the Celtics over the next 10 years, we can safely rule that possibility out. Maybe Jones is an extremely gender-conscious individual. It's more likely, however, that he's doing it because he loves basketball and he loves coaching. There aren't many dunks, and there probably will never come a time when there are several thousand screaming fans at every game. But there will be solid, fundamental basketball. There will be strategy, hustle and players coming off of perfect screens for jump shots.

Learn the game the way it should be played from the BEST... Red Auerbach. Each year he assembles a great staff to be in Waltham, MA at the multi-million dollar Auerbach gymnasium at Brandeis University to assist in conducting an intensive week-long Red Auerbach Basketball School. Look At The System: Every player is immediately graded on the basis of age, height and ability, then assigned to teams for equal balance. Every player plays an equal share of every game and there are three full games every day. "Fundamentals" stations are presented daily by professionals and coaching staff. Our stations are tough! And the clinics represent your most important learnin opportunity. The Auerbach Approach: Drill- Every day is Station Day where we drill on the Basics of the game. Repetition is important to make doing things right more natural to you.

Playing status of two NU women basketball players uncertain
LINCOLN (AP) First-year Nebraska women's basketball coach Connie Yori's already thin lineup is facing more problems as she could be down to just six scholarship players to start the season. Leading scorer Keasha Cannon and freshman Jamie Wendelin have been limited in early practices because of injuries, Yori said Friday. Cannon, the Big 12 newcomer of the year last season with an average of 12.9 points per game, has a medical condition unrelated to basketball. Yori would not say what was wrong with the 5-foot-10 junior guard, but said it was possible she could miss the season. Cannon transferred to Nebraska last season from Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City, Mo. Wendelin, a 5-foot-11 true freshman from Gretna, has a foot or ankle injury and may need surgery, Yori said. Both players could redshirt this season. If Cannon and Wendelin aren't able to play, the Huskers would have six scholarship players for the upcoming season.

They were pro basketball's most dominant team. Never mind "three-peats." The Boston Celtics of the 1950's and '60s pulled off an "eight-peat." The Celtics had Cousy and Sharman and Havlicek. They had the Joneses K.C. and Sam. But only one star was there for all 11 titles from 1957 to 1969. Bill Russell the prototypical defensive center was a champion from his rookie season until his last game in his last championship series. Before he arrived, the Celtics had never won a National Basketball Association title. Five times the 6-foot-9 1/2 Russell was voted MVP. Four times he was the league's leading rebounder. He played in every All-Star Game after his rookie year. His 21,620 rebounds (22.5 per game) are second all-time to Wilt Chamberlain's 23,924 (22.9 average). Relying on his left-handed hook, Russell averaged 15.1 points per game in 963 regular-season games. He probably would have led the league in blocked shots several years, but that stat wasn't kept then. He was complex, introspective, enigmatic, principled, aloof. His refusal to sign autographs was legendary.
