64. Bob Lipscomb Wins 1970 National Invitational (Chattanooga, TN)
Then, I get here a decide to play a game of basketball with some of the guys. 1,bob Lipscomb, Fort Worth, TX, 222, $2,000.00. 2, Gary love, Kent, OH, 222, $ 1,300.00.

Bob Lipscomb Wins the
1970 PPA National Invitational
Chattanooga, TN - A Fort Worth pro and a Fort Worth amateur both captured top honors in their respective divisions of the $10,000 National Invitational Tournament held June 6 and 7 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Big Bob Lipscomb shot a 66 under par score of 222 for the 144-hole event to force a playoff with Gary Love from Kent, Ohio. Lipscomb ultimately won the playoff and amateur Mike Baldoza won the amateur division with a score of 228. Baldoza adds this victory to a list which includes the 1969 Northern Open and the 1969 APA National Championship In the pro division, Lipscomb was tied with Atlanta's Roger Moore at the end of the firs day of competition. Each held a score of 108 for 72 holes. During the second day, Lipscomb, a 22 year-old Business Management major at the University of Texas in Arlington, pulled ahead of Moore when the colorful Atlanta pro fell off the pace shooting a pair of 31's. But, hard-charging Gary Love closed the gap from his position at the end of the first day two strokes behind the leader and finished the 144-holes in a tie with Lipscomb. Lipscomb and Love had been paired together throughout the final day of competition so each was keenly aware of the other's playing style. When it became obvious that Lipscomb and Love were to be forced into a playoff, it seemed only natural that the contest would be close down to the wire. On the seventeenth hole of the playoff, Lipscomb took a three and allowed Love to even the match. Love's ace on the eighteenth hold seemed to conclude the match but Lipscomb made a perfect putt and the match was forced into a sudden death playoff.

Colleagues pay tribute to long-time UD photographer
Nearly 2,000 friends, colleagues and family members attended an April 26 celebration of the life of Robert I. Cohen, University photographer for almost 15 years who died tragically April 21. Throughout the ceremony in the Bob Carpenter Center, images taken by Mr. Cohen were projected on a screen behind the speakers. The Rev. Laura Lee C. Wilson, campus pastor and executive director of the Wesley Foundation Campus Ministry, opened the ceremony, calling it a tribute from his UD colleagues, recognizing "his place in our larger family, the many of us who love him and who will miss him." The images used in the ceremony, she said showed "not only his skill of photography, his love for the University of Delaware family, but things he saw through his extraordinary eye and heart. As the Jewish proverb reminds us, 'the heart sees better than the eye.' That is how Bob saw people–with his heart, then his eyes," she said. UD President David P. Roselle said the location of the event was particularly fitting, since "many of Bob's brightest moments, both as a photographer and as a fan were [in the Bob Carpenter Center] as he photographed the men's and women's basketball teams, not to mention many of the performing artists who have appeared here....

Storage facility proves it's worth its salt
Some say variety is the spice of life, but for Argonne's Plant Facilities and Services Division , salt is the seasoning that has placed them at the top of the heap. Argonne-East's salt storage facility has been awarded the Salt Institute's 1995 Excellence in Storage Award. The institute, located in Alexandria, Va., recognizes agencies who assess environmental concerns such as location, design and operation when building de-icing salt storage facilities. Grounds foreman Robert J. LeClercq (PFS-GR) said the salt was previously stored in a 1940 vintage Quonset hut with a dirt floor. This building only had space to store about 600 tons. The new facility can store more than 1,500 tons of salt and meets all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations. Proper salt storage also includes employee safety, good housekeeping practices and storing enough salt to meet winter's snow and ice emergencies.

As a former basketball coach, I thoroughly enjoyed the detailed accounts of various seasons and of especially important games. Also, in fairness to Knight, I am grateful (I really am) to share his perspectives on what has obviously been, until now, a highly complicated and controversial career. Knight helps me to understand why so many people love him, respect him, and support him. Perhaps without realizing it, he also helps me to understand why so many other people view him with contempt and even hostility. At least in one respect, Knight reminds me of Billy Martin and Woody Hayes who, when working with certain kinds of athletes (talented, obedient, thick-skinned, deferential, preferably reverential), consistently produced winning teams. Also like Knight, their behavior on and off the field of competition was highly controversial and both of them frequently expressed the same righteous indignation which Knight does in this book.

Lessons on the Art of Fathering from the Game of Baseball Jack Petrash Hardbound, dustjacketed
I am actually not a baseball fan (give me a good basketball game any time!), but I love this book. I'm also not a father - I'm a mother - but I still love this book. This is the first book on parenting that is such an engaging read that I felt like I had found a long-lost friend - one who spent the years of our separation the same way I did: raising children. Jack Petrash has managed to give the most realistic account I have thus far read of the process, the glory, and the gritty REALITY of parenting - and, he had me rolling in the aisles with laughter all the way through. Whether you're a father or a mother, even if you don't like baseball, I suspect you'll love this book as much as I did. It is a great book for new parents or for old, tired parents. It uplifts, informs, entertains and energizes - what more could any parent want? Plus, you can learn one heck of a lot about baseball, too!

  • L to R: Dr. Richard Ruetten, John Kuhr with grandson Mario Pizzini, Don Vaupel, Bill Sever, Marcia Carillo, Max Erickson, Chad Chadwick and Rusty Danreuther. Northern Montana College has a tradition of excellence in the classroom and on the playing field a tradition that goes back to the very beginning of the school and that has continued throughout our 65 year history. February 19 the Northern Montana College Alumni Association recognized students and coaches who built that tradition by inducting eight outstanding individuals into the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. Honorees in this inaugural group included retired coach R.W. "Sandy" Sandven, football star Bob Lanning, four members of the 1960's era swim team: Bill Sever, Chad Chadwick, Max Erickson and Marcia Keller Carillo; and basketball standouts John Kuhr and Dr. Richard Ruetten.
Coach R.W. "Sandy" Sandven coached basketball, baseball, golf and tennis at NMC and was Athletic Director from 1937 to 1948. At that time, the College was a two-year school and his teams shared the gym facilities at Havre High School. He guided the Northern Lights to the College's first state basketball championship in 1938 and his baseball and golf teams also won conference championships. Coach Sandven was not able attend the awards presentation, but he wrote to say: "NMC was my first college teaching job and it was a memorable learning experience in a perfect setting of excellent faculty, great administration and the finest and best possible student body. I am indeed honored to be inducted as a coach into your Athletic Hall of Fame. This pleasure is added to the whole Montana experience which was and still is a wonderful and cherished part of my life. You have made an 88-year-old man very happy." His good friend Don Vaupel accepted the award on his behalf.

NS: Thanks for joining us Mr. Bigelow. Can you tell us how you got involved with the topic of youth sports? Why are you so passionate about the subject? Bob Bigelow: Well, two reasons. Number one, having done hundreds of basketball clinics from the time I was a teenager in the late 60's and early 70's, all the way through the late 80's, I finally recognized one day that I was teaching things all wrong to the children that I thought should be learning. It took a fresh slap of reality in my face to find out that maybe I should take a look a little further about how to approach and talk to these kids, so that they might actually learn something. This was sort of the alarm going off in my head in the late 80's, then I finally got around four years later to figuring out that organized sports should be for the children.
