Pistol Pete's childhood - a Great Show for Young Basketball Players

Pros
Great story, good family film, excellent basketball drills and demonstrations
Cons
It feels like a made-for-TV movie (which it is), but I didn't mind The Bottom Line A great basketball movie watch it with your family! Full Review Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot. "Pistol" Pete Maravich is a legend of basketball. He produced this film to show his sons what his childhood was like, and to teach them that they could achieve their dreams. The film is inspirational in the way that the movie "October Sky" is inspirational it teaches that you can set high goals and achieve them. Also, it includes some great basketball instruction. If I remember correctly, Pistol Pete died before the movie was completed. He had a hard attack while playing basketball with friends. He was 40 years old. So, besides being an entertaining movie, this film is a tribute to his memory.

Filled in some gaps for me in Maravich's life
Cons
Just a little distant Full Review For those of you, say, under the age of 40, you may not realize just how spectacular Pete Maravich was at the game of basketball. Maravich still holds a bunch of records, particularly in the college game. He averaged more than 40 points per game in each of three seasons (1967-1970) at LSU, and went on to a solid career in the NBA. Maravich has been overshadowed over the years by names such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Julius Erving, but take it from me he's at the top of my list as the single greatest ballhandler in NBA history. No one has ever matched what he could do with a basketball. I was looking for a book that filled in some of the gaps in my knowledge of Maravich's life, and "Forever Showtime" does a nice job of filling in some of the blanks.

    The Basketball Hall Of Fame
The basketball hall of fame, founded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, opened it's doors October, 1949, in a two-room office on the campus of Springfield College in Massachusetts, where James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. The first members were inducted in 1959 and construction on a building for the basketball hall of fame began two years later. But construction was stopped on the hall for lack of money. New fund-raising drives had to be started to complete the basketball hall of fame construction. The building finally opened on Feb. 17, 1968. From 1968 until 1985 the hall attracted 630,179 visitors. A new $11 million building in a different location in Springfield was opened to the public on June 30, 1985. In 2002, the Hall of Fame moved into its third building, a $45 million, 80,000-square-foot facility. Nominees for the basketball hall of fame are voted upon by a 24-member committee of trustees, media, and inducted members. If not elected within five years after nomination, a candidate can be considered by a special veterans committee after another wait of five years.

"Pete Maravich was Showtime before there was Showtime. The only problem with Pete Maravich was the four other guys; he just didn't relate to the rest of the team. A team was Pete Maravich and anybody who was inbounding to him," says columnist Robert Lipsyte on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. The show. Pete Maravich lived for it. Basketball fans died to see it. While Pistol Pete is the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer, it was his game show that dazzled, as he displayed his creative genius, the kind of sleight-of-hand artistry that left crowds gasping. A skinny white guard from LSU, he was a Harlem Globetrotter in skill and spirit, if not uniform. Pete Maravich averaged 24.2 points during his 10 NBA seasons.

Georgetown Basketball History Chapter 4: A Glimpse Into The Future It's now just a footnote in Georgetown's illustrious basketball history, a 83-82 loss to Louisiana State in the 1970 National Invitation Tournament, a game which brought Georgetown its first post-season bid in a generation. While a first round loss in the NIT does not seem momentous today, the efforts of the 1969-1970 Hoyas offered a glimpse of Georgetown's basketball future. Thirty years ago, no one would have imagined Georgetown a future national power. Between 1947 and 1972, Georgetown's overall record was under .500, with fewer wins (296) than any of the 32 Catholic universities playing major college basketball during this period. In an era which saw local talent such as Elgin Baylor, John Thompson, Fred Hetzel, Dave Bing, Bob Lewis, and Austin Carr become college All-Americans, Georgetown passed on each of them, staying among its traditional recruiting base among Catholic and suburban high schools in the New Jersey area. Between 1954 and 1969, the Hoyas regularly fell short of the NIT and never challenged for the NCAA's. The 1965 team lost 7 of its final 10 games to drop from NIT consideration; in 1967, 8 of 11; in 1969, 7 of 9. Little wonder, then, that an ad in the 1970 game program summed up the feelings of fans when it stated: "NIT: This IS The Year."

Product Reviews: Pistol makes you want to dream like never before. The Pistol The Birth of a Legend is jam packed with action and drills to make you want to go outside and work until you die. It expresses that any man or woman on earth could do what ever he or she wants to do if they has confidence. Press Maravich, Pistol's dad, drives Pete to have confidence in what ever he wants to do and Pete will succeed. Pistol Pete takes his confidence and spreads it to everyone that surrounds him. Even though most of his teammates think he's a showboat by doing his behind the back passes as an 8th grader playing varsity basketball, Pistol lets that negativeness drive him to be someone better. Pistol led his team to the state championship losing it to Cleveland High. This is the best movie I have ever seen and would recommend this to anyone whether you like basketball or not.
