I know all you Kurt Rambis fans deep down inside have a deep hatred for this man due to the cheap shoot he took on Kurt. The Boston Celtics were a dirty team. Allot of people credit the late 80's Pistons as the "Bad Boys." But in reality, the Celts were just as dirty. Many times during the Lakers head to head match-ups with Boston, fights broke out. Riley loved the open-court game with Magic Johnson. He talked of Lakers basketball being poetry in motion and the Celtics being Neanderthals. People, he said, wanted to see "Showtime," not some scrum match under the basket. The Celtics-Lakers showdown in the 1984 NBA Finals changed after Kevin McHale took down Kurt Rambis on a lay-up attempt. Kevin McHale complied , after being yelled at by M.L. But here was Kevin Garnett, who came from nothing and all of a sudden has become as great a player as there is," says Hall of Famer Bill Walton on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. At first, Kevin McHale thought he was wasting his time. The Minnesota Timberwolves executive doubted that Kevin Garnett, a Chicago schoolboy who had just turned 19, was worth the attention of a special workout, worth the serious consideration of a first-round draft choice. Kevin Garnett is the Timberwolves' all-time leading scorer. Agent Eric Fleisher had organized the workout in June 1995 and invited the 13 NBA teams with the highest draft picks. The 6-foot-11 Garnett ran through a series of drills, many of which seemed better-suited for players much shorter. He thought he had failed. McHale and Minnesota general manager Flip Saunders, though, were so enamored of Garnett's skills that they made plans to take him with the fifth overall pick. "He has the running ability and agility of a 6-2 player," said Saunders, who that year became Minnesota's coach.

Paul Virtucio Staff Reporter R acing 100 miles per hour down the road with cigar smoke from the driver making him sick to his stomach, a Minnesota native found himself going to his first practice for the Boston Celtics clouded with self-doubt. Nearly 20 years later, he finds himself going to Massachusetts again, but for a different reason. Former Golden Gopher pivot-man Kevin McHale on Wednesday became the second University men's basketball player to be elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. John Kundla, the University's first inductee, joined McHale at the press conference announcing his election, along with former Minneapolis Lakers stars George Mikan and Verne Mikkelson, also Hall-of-Famers. McHale, 41, played four seasons with the Gophers, from 1976 to 1980, while he worked toward a bachelor's degree in communications. During his collegiate career, McHale was the team's most valuable player in 1979 and 1980, rounding out his four years averaging 15.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. "I had a great time playing there, maybe too good of a time," McHale said. "All the coaches there, they worked you and they expected you to work hard."

McHale is headed to basketball Hall Compiled from wire reports For much of Kevin McHale's life, basketball has been his 9-to-5 job. But those who knew the lanky and sometimes devilish McHale as a kid, in college and in his 13 years as a Celtic, say his ability to keep basketball in perspective is what made him so good and put him at the head of the class elected yesterday to the Basketball Hall of Fame. "If you get honored for something you have so much fun doing, it just doesn't feel right," McHale said. "I never thought of it as work." "He always had the right attitude. He worked hard at the game," said Jim Dutcher, McHale's coach at the University of Minnesota. "He also didn't treat basketball as a life or death proposition." "His not taking the game seriously helped him maintain a level personality and not have as many ups and downs," said Dutcher. McHale often was overshadowed on the Celtics, as he played 12 seasons with Robert Parish and Larry Bird. The trio formed one of the best NBA frontcourts, leading the Celtics to championships in 1981, 1984 and 1986. Brought to the Celtics in 1980 with Parish, McHale at first played as a sixth man. The 6-foot-10 forward displayed a touch and moves around the basket that became a modern standard for big men.

Get Hooked The Best The Basketball Hall Of Fame The basketball hall of fame, founded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, opened it's doors October, 1949, in a two-room office on the campus of Springfield College in Massachusetts, where James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. The first members were inducted in 1959 and construction on a building for the basketball hall of fame began two years later. But construction was stopped on the hall for lack of money. New fund-raising drives had to be started to complete the basketball hall of fame construction. The building finally opened on Feb. 17, 1968. From 1968 until 1985 the hall attracted 630,179 visitors. A new $11 million building in a different location in Springfield was opened to the public on June 30, 1985. In 2002, the Hall of Fame moved into its third building, a $45 million, 80,000-square-foot facility. Nominees for the basketball hall of fame are voted upon by a 24-member committee of trustees, media, and inducted members. If not elected within five years after nomination, a candidate can be considered by a special veterans committee after another wait of five years.
