Earl "The Goat" Manigault

My team The New York Knicks by Woody Allen Interview by Denis Campbell
Sunday January 6, 2002
The Observer
I think the first time I saw the Knicks play was against the Philadelphia Warriors at the old Madison Square Garden in 1947 or 1948, before the television era. I was 11 or 12 and I went with my uncle. I remember how exciting it was to go to Madison Square Garden and to go to a live sporting event. It was the same thrill you get when you walk into a ballpark and emerge from the hallways into the arena. Joe Fulks, the great Philadelphia Warriors guard, was playing. He was the first really terrific jumpshooter in basketball. In fact at that time he had really pioneered the jumpshot which was to revolutionise the game. He had come to New York with a significant scoring average of something like 23 points per game, which was very high for that time. It was amazing to watch him because he was a better shooter than the other ball players and because he did that jumpshot. I had always liked sports in general and I liked basketball to a certain degree over the years; I had followed it from when I was very little, when the Knicks used to play at the old Madison Square Garden. But I wasn't as big a basketball fan as I was a baseball fan, because baseball was the great sport in America, though it gradually started to get rivalled by American football and basketball. Although I watched the Knicks through the 1940s and 1950s, I didn't become an ardent fan until 1968-69. That's when they started to coagulate as a wonderful team and they captured the imagination of everybody in New York. By the time they were on their way to winning the NBA championship in 1970, they had become the hottest thing in New York and all you wanted to know was: 'How did the Knicks do tonight?', 'Did they win?', 'Did they make the spread?'

By Frank Deford Issue date: November 4, 1968 Gimpy, hobbling along like an arthritic old man until the game begins, he comes onto the court and suddenly is whole and strong and agile, as if touched by some faith healer. Renowned for his flash, he is actually the model of efficiency, controlling the ball, and with it the game and the crowd, until, with a whoosh of verve, he has made the play. The man weaving this magic spell is Earl "The Pearl" Monroe. He is a backcourt man of the new era in pro basketball. While the famous backcourt names of the '60s are not yet about to be eclipsed, they are being forced by Monroe, Detroit's Dave Bing and a lot of other young stars to move over and share their reputations as the movers and shakers of the game. Already this year Oscar Robertson and Jerry West have been injured. Robertson will be 30 later this month, and of the established backcourt stars, he is the youngest. West, Hal Greer, Sam Jones, Lenny Wilkens, Guy Rodgers, Don Ohl and Dick Barnett are all older still. Archie Clark and Wally Jones at Philadelphia; Jeff Mullins and Jimmy King at San Francisco; Chicago's Jerry Sloan; Altanta's Walt Hazzard; New York's Walt Frazier and Bill Bradley (if they, like their team, ever untrack themselves) are among the best young guards now exerting themselves in the league. And Bing, in only his second season, managed something last year that no guard not even West or Robertson had done in 20 years of league play: He won the league scoring title.

The most celebrated of all actresses, Marilyn Monroe, was born Norma Jean Mortenson, on June 1, 1926, in the Los Angeles General Hospital, in California. Prior to her birth, Marilyn's father bought a motorcycle and headed north to San Francisco, thus abandoning the family in LA. Marilyn grew up not knowing for sure who her father really was. Her mother, Gladys, had entered into several relationships thus confusing her daughter who fathered her.
Afterward, Gladys gave Norma Jean (Marilyn) the name of Baker, a previous suitor before Mortenson. Poverty was a constant companion. Gladys, who was extremely attractive and worked for RKO Studios as a film cutter, suffered from mental illness and therefore was in and out of mental institutions for the rest of her life. Subsequently, Marilyn spent time in foster homes. When she was nine, Marilyn was placed in an orphanage where she was to stay for the next two years. When she was released from the orphanage, she went to, yet, another foster home.
In 1942, at the age of sixteen Marilyn married an aircraft plant worker by the name of James Dougherty who was 21. The marriage only lasted four years when they divorced in 1946. By this time, Marilyn began to model swim suits and bleached her hair blonde. Various shots made their way into the public eye, where some were eventually seen by RKO head, Howard Hughes. Hughes offered Marilyn a screen test, but an agent suggested that Fox Studios would be the better choice since it was bigger and more prestigious. She was signed to a contract at $125 per week for a six month period and that was increased by $25 at the end of that time when her contract was lengthened.
