IN THE NEWS Crowd celebrates restored courts with NBA star
By Ted Lapides NBA star Chris Mullin of the Indiana Pacers and Black Jack Ryan, formerly of the Harlem Wizards, were the big attractions Saturday morning, August 12, when the newly restored school basketball courts on Bateman Road were officially reopened with a raffle, clinic and demonstrations for an overflow crowd of eager Island hoopsters. The festivities were organized by George Kneeland with the help of Ken Lewis and a group of volunteers to celebrate the success of Project Blacktop, Kneeland's recent fund-raising effort to repave and restore the courts. Before Saturday's event, Kneeland was concerned that the short notice he'd been able to give for the event would limit attendance. But by 11 a.m. on Saturday, families began to gather and soon a lot of kids were having a good time. They donned red hats from the New Jersey Nets, compliments of Jerry Cohen, Island resident and part owner of the Nets, and Lou Katz, principle owner of the Nets. Cohen was asked to bring 100 hats but it wasn't enough to cover the heads of all the kids. Even with the shortage, it was exciting to see a sea of red shooting baskets on the new courts. Black Jack Ryan displayed an amazing array of basketball tricks. The former pro dazzled the kids with dizzying ball handling skills and dribbling moves. He matched shooting skills with two young players from the crowd in a game called "Out," an abbreviated game similar to "Horse," and even though the kids put up a super effort they finally went down to defeat.

THE COACH WHO HAS SEEN IT ALL
By Lenn Robbins, New York Post
(Printed in March 2000)
Syracuse's Jim Boeheim is the sole survivor, the only BIG EAST coach who has seen the drama of every conference tournament unfold. He will never forget the early years, when Syracuse and Georgetown began a rivalry that helped gain the conference national prominence and endures until today. Then St. John's, led by Chris Mullin and Walter Berry, moved into the elite of the BIG EAST. The Red Storm and Hoyas owned college hoops, although it was St. John's 70-69 win over Syracuse in the 1986 finals that will be remembered as a championship game for the ages. Boeheim saw the league mature in the early 90's when Seton Hall, Boston College and Providence all won BIG EAST Conference Tournament titles. And then he watched the power shift, as Connecticut rose to the top of the league. All of these changes, and changings of the guard, brings us to first BIG EAST Conference Tournament title of the new millennium and the last tournament in which every team will come to Madison Square Garden. Next season, when the BIG EAST splits into two divisions, the last place teams will stay home. No wonder that this year's tournament has evoked so much passionate conversation. Connecticut was the overwhelming preseason pick to win its third straight title and fifth in the last seven years. But the Huskies have struggled in conference play and aren't a lock.

50 GREATEST PLAYERS Great Players, Great Memories
By Dick Weiss, New York Daily News
(Printed in March 1999)
The Big East has rapidly emerged as one of the most influential conferences in the country since its inception in 1979-80, leaving a legacy of great players. Now, in this anniversary season, we felt it has produced enough stars to merit a list of all time greats, from 1 through 50. The list, which originally ran in the News two years ago and has since been updated, is subjective strictly my opinion but it should make for some interesting discussion. For purposes of making the cut, I limited the pool to those players who had already left school and based the choices on what I felt they meant to the league, so current All America candidates like forward Richard Hamilton and guard Khalid El Amin of UConn and forward Ron Artest of St. John's will have to wait their turn. The best two players ever were no brainers Patrick Ewing of Georgetown and Chris Mullin of St. John's. They both played in the league's golden era from 1981 through 1985. My own personal favorite will always be Billy Donovan, who transformed himself from a chubby backup guard into the star of Rick Pitino's 1987 Cinderella team at Providence that advanced to the Final Four. There are 12 first team All Americans on the list Sleepy Floyd of Georgetown (1980), Ewing (1983, 84, 85), Mullin (1984, 85), Walter Berry of St. John's (1986), Reggie Williams of Georgetown (1987), Derrick Coleman of Syracuse (1990), Billy Owens of Syracuse (1991), Alonzo Mourning of Georgetown (1992), Donyell Marshall of UConn (1994), Ray Allen of UConn (1996), Kerry Kittles of Villanova (1995, 96) and Allen Iverson of Georgetown (1996). All are included in our Top 20.
