SEE Magazine ON SCREEN BY CYNTHIA AMSDEN PREVIEW My Giant (Castle Rock) Starring Billy Crystal, Gheorghe Muresan Directed by Michael Lehmann One night on Bill Maher's show Politically Incorrect, four comedians discussed the subject they knew best - comedy. Of particular interest was why there are so many Jewish comics. Given the panel consisted of Robert Klein, Larry Miller, Kevin Pollak and David Cross, there was a safe representation to answer the question. Miller suggested that if a people are oppressed for a thousand years, they end up with a great story bank. And Maher suggested Jews realized that if you make people laugh, they won't beat you up. Everyone conceded the image of the funny little guy remains a regular on the comedy menu. So how does Billy Crystal fit into this scenario? In My Giant, his sixth film, Crystal once again plays the role of "the Jewish guy" looking for direction in his life. The role is not a novel twist, given he played it in When Harry Met Sally and again in City Slickers I and II. It's just that, in this film, he adds one gigantic new element: Gheorghe Muresan, the seven foot seven inch Lithuanian basketball player from the NBA's Washington Wizards. The story, which was created by Crystal, is about a second-rate talent agent (Crystal) frantically in need of a successful client. He discovers Max (Muresan), a Shakespeare-quoting caretaker living in a Romanian monastery. The giant is his ticket back into the big league, but Sammy is faced with an ethical bypass to make the scheme work.
