ASHEVILLE, N.C., Jan. 13, 2002 – The Asheville Altitude have signed former Ohio State University point guard James “Scoonie” Penn, team head coach Joey Meyer announced. A native of Salem, Massachusetts, Penn was named the 1999 Big Ten Player of the Year and Big First Team selection after his junior year at Ohio State. In just two seasons, Penn made an immediate impact on the OSU record books, finishing his career first all-time in 3-point field goals made (153) and attempted (437) and 33rd in scoring (1,076 points). Penn is also the 38th Ohio State player to reach the 1,000-point plateau, but only the second to reach that point in just two seasons. During his senior year (2000), Penn averaged 15 ppg and 4.2 rpg. and scored in double-figures in 26 of 30 games and led the Buckeyes in scoring 11 times. He tied his career-high 30 points against NCAA champion Michigan State on February 15, 2000 and was named to the First-Team All Big Ten for the second straight season. Penn also led OSU in assists with a 3.5 apg..

CHICAGO You want to believe. You really do. You hear Jim O'Brien say he truly believes Scoonie Penn is going to make his next shot, and you rewind your memory banks to some of the huge shots he has made. You hear Penn say his confidence isn't shaken by a Godzilla of a shooting slump, and you remind yourself he is one of the best clutch players you have ever seen. It is hard. You watch Penn miss open shot after open shot after open shot, watch him shoot the three- pointer like some web-footed, spasmodic 7-foot goon and wonder if they aren't kidding themselves. You watch him make only 2 of 14 three-point attempts in the Buckeyes' 71-66 loss to Penn State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament, and you wonder if the Buckeyes' run through the NCAA tourney isn't going to end the same way. No.

Nobody anticipated what Ohio State accomplished last year in soaring from last in the Big Ten to second place and an eventual berth in the Final Four. Now Jim O'Brien wants to make sure such accomplishments don't shape the expectations for his team this season or in seasons to come. Fast facts Coach: Jim O'Brien At Ohio State: 35-31, 2 years; Overall, 270-248, 17 years 1998-99 Record: 27-9 Overall; 12-4 Big Ten (2nd) Honors candidate: Scoonie Penn, Michael Redd and Ken Johnson "Anybody who's expecting Final Fours to be a yearly occurrence needs to start following Duke," said O'Brien, who in two years turned OSU from an 8-22 embarrassment to a 27-9 regional champion. "Everybody needs to know that getting to the Final Four is the exception, it's not the rule. OSU's dream of getting back to college basketball's signature event took a heavy hit shortly after Big Ten co-MVP Scoonie Penn announced he would return to school for his senior season. Two-year starter Jon Sanderson transferred and 7-3 junior college recruit Aleksander Radojevic was ruled ineligible by the NCAA. Despite the losses, Penn's return again gives the Buckeyes a dynamic duo with two-time scoring leader Michael Redd.

Posted: Wednesday March 03, 1999 06:15 PM AP CHICAGO (AP) Scoonie Penn has led the Ohio State Buckeyes to one of the most dramatic turnarounds in college basketball. Michigan State's Mateen Cleaves has taken his team to No. 2, its highest ranking since Magic Johnson was a Spartan. So who's the best player in the Big Ten? That depends on who you ask. The conference coaches picked Cleaves as Big Ten player of the year. The media chose Penn. "It was maybe poetic justice," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said after the awards were announced Monday. "I think both were worthy of it, and I think both would have great respect for each other and felt [the other] deserved it." Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien was chosen coach of the year by the media for taking the Buckeyes from eight wins last year to 22-7 and No. 11 in the country.
