KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Kenny Gregory is happiest when he's running free on the basketball court. He had plenty of chances Friday as Nebraska kept handing over the ball. Gregory keyed a second-half rally off turnovers by the Huskers to lead Kansas to a 77-53 victory in the second round of the Big 12 tournament. ''I just felt good out there. We were just getting so many easy baskets in the second half,'' Gregory said. ''Everybody on our bench was jumping up and down and really getting into it. ''Nebraska is a good athletic team. I like to feel I'm pretty athletic. So I like to play against them because I feel like I have somebody to match my talents up against.'' Nebraska, which had forced 26 turnovers by Texas Tech in the first round Thursday, gave the ball away 27 times. The Huskers collapsed completely in the second half, committing 17 of the turnovers then as Kansas pulled away. The 27 turnovers broke the tournament record that Tech had set the night before. It was the most by a Kansas opponent since Iowa made 31 Dec. 8 in a game that the Hawkeyes went on to win and break the Jayhawks' 64-game homecourt winning streak.

The Associated Press LAWRENCE, Kan. After breaking Nebraska's 15-year losing streak at Allen Fieldhouse, Venson Hamilton has seen all he wants of Kansas. ''A miracle, that's all I can say,'' Hamilton said Wednesday night after the Huskers erased an 11-point deficit and nailed down a 64-57 victory over the 24th-ranked Jayhawks. ''I hope we don't see them anymore because I know they'll be mad.'' Cary Cochran hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:42 left and then Nebraska outshot Kansas at the foul line for its first two-game sweep of the Jayhawks since 1982-83. ''Our kids never quit. We never panicked. We made some clutch free throw shooting,'' said coach Danny Nee, whose Huskers (16-8, 8-3 Big 12) have won eight of nine league games for the first time since 1966-67. ''We didn't win pretty, but we found a way to win.''

For Kansas, unheralded Robertson holds key to Final Four door
By Dennis Dodd
CBS SportsLine Senior Writer
March 12, 1998 LAWRENCE, Kan. It's easy to pick Ryan Robertson out of Kansas' constellation of stars. He's all-American by birth only. He's more likely to stay longer in school for his MBA than leave early for the NBA. The only jam he'll tell you about is the one he had for breakfast. Yet at this moment, a case can be made for the 6-foot 5-inch junior point guard being as important a Jayhawk as there is heading into the NCAA Tournament. Robertson runs the team about as well as he runs his mouth, which is smooth and effortlessly. Here's a guy who thinks before he passes AND speaks. At times the conscious of the No. 3 Jayhawks seems like a basketball player second and an orator first. Ryan Robertson must step up with leadership and scoring if the Jayhawks are going to make it to the Final Four. (AP) "It's good to be reminded what that felt like," Robertson said of the stinging loss to Arizona that sent Kansas home from the Southeast Regional last season. "Last year's team was the best in the country without any doubt. This year's team seems like it's the forgotten No. 1 seed. We're kind of battling a little bit for respect." ROBERTSON SAYS IT WITH SUCH Robertson's observations are a given. He must now step up with his scoring and leadership if the Jayhawks are going to make their anticipated run to the Final Four.

Application
His strength is shooting ... Played point guard in high school and college, so he can make plays for others ... At 6-5, is one of the team's tallest guards ... Will run a fast-break and make a solid, dependable decision on most occasions.
Glitches
As raw as most rookies ... Lacks quickness and strength and will need to acquire them ... He'll need time to develop but could eventually play both guard spots ... No one knows how tough he is.
Techno-babble
The straight-laced rookie compliments out-of-this-world Pollard.

GAIL WOOD, THE OLYMPIAN
Gordon Robertson and Mick Ryan, two long-time coaches from South Sound, are among 13 high school coaches nominated for the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame. An executive board will make the final selection in September. Robertson's 40-year coaching career began at Pe Ell in 1963. He began coaching track at Tenino in 1968 and will coach the Beavers once again this spring. "What's kept me coming back all these years are the kids," Robertson said. "I just love coaching." Robertson retired from teaching in 1970 after 32 years. For three years in the early 1970s, Robertson coached the cross-country team and assisted in football. "I'd send my team on a run and then I'd go over and help the football team," said Robertson, who grew up in Chehalis and graduated from Western Washington College in 1959. "It was a way of making a little extra more money." Robertson ran with his cross country teams and later rode his bike after injuring a knee.

BACK TO... Home Sports CLASSIFIED ARCHIVES ... for printing At 39 years old, Knights' Antoine Carr loves basketball By DAVID BOYCE - The Kansas City Star
Date: 01/07/01 22:15
A few days before the Kansas City Knights hit the hardwood for their first basketball game in the ABA, 39-year-old Antoine Carr was working hard on floors in Sandy, Utah. In Carr's case, he wasn't bouncing a basketball on the floor. Instead, he was running his company, NBA (Nothing But Awesome) Flooring, which installs carpets, ceramic tile and laminate, vinyl and wood floors. It's a business Carr takes seriously. He employs 10 installers and even has a Web site, www.nbaflooring.com. Clearly, after a stellar collegiate career at Wichita State, followed by one season in Italy and 16 in the NBA, Carr had found his niche outside professional basketball. One problem prevented Carr from being 100 percent devoted to his new business. A passion to play basketball still burns inside him. Knights coach Kevin Pritchard found that out when he called an agent while looking for a veteran center to come off the bench and provide leadership. "The agent told me, `I got the perfect guy for you Antoine Carr,' " Pritchard said. "My first reaction was, was he in shape?"
