Oscar, Oscar, Oscar: Dream team shuts down Schmidt
    By Chris Sheridan
AP Basketball Writer July 30, 1996 Atlanta Dream Team met Oscar, and Oscar never had a chance. Oscar Schmidt, the most prolific scorer in international basketball history, freed himself of Scottie Pippen's defense just enough to score 26 points Tuesday night. It hardly mattered as the U.S. team routed Brazil 98-75. Schmidt's last Olympic game in the spotlight was predictable a few crazy shots, plenty of defensive attention from the United States, and another romp for the Dream Team, which has won its last three games handily. The United States improved its career Olympic record to 99-2 and moved into the semifinals to face Australia on Thursday. Yugoslavia and Lithuania will play in the other semifinal. Pippen, who has become the defensive stopper for the United States, played rough with Schmidt, especially in the second half, when the 38-year-old forward managed only seven points. Schmidt went to the bench with 9:27 left yelling at the referees and complaining about the Americans' physical defense. But he returned with 3:59 left and scored the final basket of the game a runner from a tough angle on the right side over the outstretched arms of Hakeem Olajuwon. But by then, the highlight for much of the crowd had already happened and Schmidt wasn't it. Instead, the two loudest cheers were for the U.S. women's gymnastics team, which appeared at center court at halftime, and Charles Barkley's encore of the YMCA dance he first performed last Friday.

Basketball Roundup: Now it's the Olympic Final Four
    By Jim O'Connell
AP Basketball Writer July 30, 1996 Atlanta Australia crashed the Olympic final four. Tony Ronaldson's four-point play with 34 seconds to go broke the game's final tie and moved Australia into the semifinals of the men's basketball tournament with a 73-71 upset of Croatia on Tuesday night. Croatia, the 1992 silver medalist and a team that includes NBA standouts Toni Kukoc and Dino Radja, figured to contend for a medal again. But it was Australia that played well in the clutch. The close game was a far cry from the early quarterfinals in which Lithuania cruised past Greece 99-66 and Yugoslavia crushed China 128-67. The United States beat Brazil 98-75 in the last quarterfinal and will play Australia in a Thursday semifinal. "We'll play the Dream Team as hard as we can, but now we're guaranteed the top four and we'll have a chance for a medal," Ronaldson said. "That's huge for Australia." Australia's best finish was fourth in the 1988 games. This semifinal trip came off because of some solid defense down the stretch and Ronaldson's big play right in front of the Croatian bench. It was 66-66 when Australia (5-1) worked the shot clock down to five seconds and Ronaldson let fly. He was fouled by Radja and made the free throw to complete a four-point play.

Stags Nip Purple Eagles in Overtime

The Niagara University men's basketball team dropped a tough 84-82 loss in double overtime to Fairfield at the Gallagher Center on Wednesday night. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Purple Eagles.
Niagara came out strong in the first half, hitting 18-31 (.581) from the field in taking a 45-34 lead at the break. Michael Schmidt led NU by scoring 13 of his 15 points in the first half.
Fairfield fought back in the second half, using an 11-0 run to take a 64-59 lead with 5:26 remaining in the game. Christos Defoudis then scored four straight points to bring Niagara within one, 64-63. After Sam Spann hit a lay-up with 2:55 left in the game, Niagara's Demond Stewart hit 3-4 at the line, including a pair to knot the score at 66-66 with 1:05 left. Niagara's Daryl Greene had a chance to win the game in regulation, but he missed both ends of a two-shot foul with 4.6 seconds left.
In the first overtime, Fairfield led most of the way, taking a 74-70 lead when Spann hit a jumper with 2:09 left. Defoudis hit 2-2 at the line to cut the deficit to 74-72 at the 1:02 mark. James Reaves then hit 1-2 with 50.3 seconds left to cut the gap to one. After a Fairfield miss, Defoudis was fouled with 16.1 seconds left and hit 1-2 to send the game into another overtime.
Niagara took an 82-79 lead in the second overtie after a Daryl Greene jumper, two Rhossi Carron free throws and Reaves hitting 1-2 at the line. Chris Rivers hit 2-2 to cut the deficit to 82-81 at the 48.6 second mark. Niagara's Larry Johnson grabbed a Daryl Greene missed three-pointer and was fouled with 10.1 seconds on the clock. Johnson missed both free throws and Rivers drained the game-winning three-pointer with 3.1 seconds left in the game. Greene missed a long three-pointer at the buzzzer.

This 16-team tournament is an event of FIBA, the governing body for international basketball, and features countries representing Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and the Americas. Since its start in 1950, the World Basketball Championship is held every four years. It is the most competitive and prestigious tournament in international basketball, and it is a great honour for participating athletes to represent their countries. Why NBA Players Can Participate Before the 1992 Olympic Games, NBA players could not participate in international competition. Teams other than the U.S., however, featured players who were veteran pro athletes, such as legendary Brazilian scorer Oscar Schmidt who played professionally in Italy. After the 1998 Games, FIBA Secretary-General Boris Stankovic felt a change was needed.

About Schmidt: Jack says it's KU but it is not The voice will be instantly recognizable even if the campus isn't. In the new movie "About Schmidt," Jack Nicholson plays Warren Schmidt, a recent retiree and widower en route to stop his daughter's wedding. He announces in a voiceover that he is taking a detour in his journey from Omaha to Denver. "Next stop: my alma mater, the University of Kansas," he says in that famous Nicholson drawl. But what the moviegoer sees next is not KU's hilltop, tree-lined Jayhawk Boulevard, gleaming Campanile, red-tile roofs or tranquil Potter Lake. No, Jack says it is KU, but Jayhawkers will quickly realize that Jack isn't in Kansas. Instead, he is at the University of Nebraska campus in Lincoln. The movie's director, Alexander Payne, is an Omaha native who bases many of his films-including "About Schmidt"-in his hometown. So even though Jack's character is a KU alumnus, Payne opted for convenience and filmed the scene at the nearby NU campus.

    http://www.zonalatina.com/Zldata123.htm
    Watching Basketball on Television
in Latin America In most Latin American countries, the sport of choice is no doubt soccer. In the few countries where soccer is not dominant, such as Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, it is baseball that rules. Behind either soccer or baseball, we usually find basketball as the next favorite sport. This is true probably in many other regions of the world. One significant reason for the global popularity of basketball is undoubtedly the excitement caused by the presence of televised basketball games, primarily those exported from the United States of America. That nation is currently by far the most dominant basketball power, as evidenced by the phenomenal successes achieved by the U.S. "Dream Teams" in world championships. Apart from those international tournaments, television viewers all over the world are supplied with a constant stream of US professional games. Since these games are being played for the US audience anyway, the additional revenues coming from international broadcasts represent easy profits. That is why there exists a concerted program to export NBA/WNBA everywhere. According to the Los Medios y Mercados de Latinoamérica 1998 study, 28% of persons 12 to 64 years old in Latin America said that they regularly watched basketball games on television. These games cover NBA regular season and playoff games, WNBA regular season and playoff games as well as local or national games. In the next table, we show the breakdown of the audience of televised basketball by various demographic characteristics.
