The 2002 Basketball World Championship is likely to go down as the most memorable for time to come. For the first time in international sporting competition the United States dream team, composed of star NBA players, were defeated. Argentina took honor as the first to upset the USA dream team, on its last game of a successful second round. Meanwhile in the quarter finals, the two teams that were tipped at meeting in the finals had to battle much earlier than expected. Fortunately Yugoslavia took honors of being the first team to eliminate the USA dream team from medal contention, with a 81-78 result.
Minneapolis, the founding cradle of basketball, enjoyed the status as host of the 2002 World Championship. In the sermi finals Argentina defeated Germany, while Yugoslavia defeated New Zealand. The final was an exemplary display of talent and patriotic honor, with the winner being decided in overtime. Yugoslavia managed to defend its world crown, by defeated Argentina 84-77. As defending European Champions, Yugoslavia now hold the sensational title as back-to-back World Champions. Team Yugoslavia

BC Partizan 1952 BC Partizan 1962 The Making Of a Giant: BC Partizan 1979 The New Dream Team: The following year (1989), reinforced by the talented Predrag Danilovic, Partizan prevailed in the Korac Cup for the third time in its history, beating Viva Vismara Cantu. After losing the first game in Italy (76-89), Partizan rooted the Italians in Belgrade (101-82) after formidable performances of its stars. That season also saw Partizan’s "Dream Team" beat Jugoplastika Split (87-74) in the national cup final. With its world-famous reputation Partizan was more than attractive for young Yugoslav talents. On the other hand, it suffered from the exodus of its stars to wealthier European and even NBA teams. Vlade Divac and Zarko Paspalj left for the NBA in 1989 and along with the late Drazen Petrovic, became the first Yugoslav players in the World’s strongest league. Later the NBA got to know Aleksandar Djordjevic and Predrag Danilovic which makes Partizan the only European club to have had four of its former players to have played in the NBA.

Was für Köln spricht?
