    The Johns Hopkins News-Letter
So what is up with all these regular-season tournaments cluttering the schedules this year? I remember, back in the day, when UConn would start the season by cleaning up in the Great Alaska Shootout and then play a month's worth of cupcake games before opening up their Big East schedule at the end of December. November is for humiliating the likes of Yale, Central Connecticut and the Slovakian National Team, not facing Iowa and Duke on consecutive days. Teams need time to work out the kinks in their games and to learn how to play together. Everyone is rusty after a summer off, even if they have spent the whole off-season in the gym. Going up against live competition is a whole other ballgame. It takes time to polish an offense, and even if a team is returning five starters, the players have to get re-accustomed to the profanity-laced tirades of their head coaches. Does anybody think that perennial powerhouse Kentucky would have three losses by mid-December if they were facing mid-level competition, which is normal for this time of year?

Cara's Athlete of the Week: Jake Voskuhl
The Johns Hopkins News-Letter Meet Jake. A member of the 1999 NCAA Champion UConn Huskies, he is a very impressive force on the floor, and he is more than ready to make the jump into the NBA this year. The Chicago Bulls' rookie spent four years as the starting center at the University of Connecticut. He started more games than anyone in the history of the school after having been thrust into the role as a freshman. At 6'11", Jake has the height, agility and skills to overmatch any center he comes across. UConn coach Jim Calhoun called him their goalie because nothing got by him. He was an absolute steal in the second round of the draft; his offense is just beginning to fully develop. The pride and joy of Katy, Texas, is often not taken seriously in the basketball world just because he does not look like your typical basketball player. His looks and basketball skills are both blindingly awsome. News Science Opinions Sports ... Contact Us

The result was predictable. UConn's Jake Voskuhl grabs a rebound as he is surrounded by Indiana's Michael Lewis (24), A.J. Guyton (25) and William Gladness during first-half action Saturday. (Reuters) SECOND-SEEDED CONNECTICUT DOMINATED Indiana over the final 20 minutes Saturday and pulled away to a 78-68 victory in the second round of the East Regional. Richard Hamilton scored 23 points and Khalid El-Amin had 22 points and eight assists for the Huskies, who will next play Washington on Thursday in the regional semifinals. After Indiana made 16 of its last 25 field goal attempts in the first half to take a 41-36 halftime lead, Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun let his players know that their performance to that point was totally unacceptable. "They scored on like nine of 11 possessions at one point. I told the kids to be the Connecticut basketball team that got this far," Calhoun said. "I told them we're too good a basketball team defensively to allow that many open shots."

Women WASHINGTON Indiana comes to the nation's capital from the nation's heartland, with an emotional coach and a team determined to go farther than it has in recent years. Connecticut Bobby Knight and Jim Calhoun (above) have a special relationship among coaches. Knight always gave Calhoun great advice, and Calhoun always listened. (AP) comes to the nation's capital from the nation's congested, in-your-face Northeast, with an emotional coach and a team determined to go farther than it has in recent years. For the Huskies, the latter bar is higher. The Huskies reached the Elite Eight in 1995 before losing to UCLA. Its promised land is the Final Four, the place most thought the Huskies wouldn't reach until next year. Ahead of schedule, the youngest team in the Big East and its reigning champion figures there's no time like the present. Indiana, meanwhile, already has experienced territory that is new for the seniors actually winning a tournament game. Bobby Knight has won three NCAA titles. But for players such as senior Andrae Patterson, a trip to the Sweet 16 is pretty lofty territory.

CONGRATULATING THE 1999 UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM

Statement of Senator Chris Dodd April 15, 1999 Mr. President, it is somewhat appropriate, I say to my friend and colleague from Connecticut, that the Presiding Officer is from Ohio. But for Ohio, we would not have made it to the Final Four, the final game. I want to mention a couple of people if I can. First of all is Jim Calhoun, the Head Coach of the UCONN men's basketball team. He has been with the team for 13 years and has had a wonderful, wonderful record, including capturing the 1988 NIT title and appearing in six `Sweet 16's,' and three `Elite 8" rounds. And he has now led the team to victory in the national championship. He is not only a outstanding coach, but also a wonderful human being with great dedication to his team, his players, the university, and our State. As well, his coaching staff is a fine group of people who have also dedicated so much energy and time to making this team the success it has been. I would also like to mention some of our UCONN players and commend a couple of the fine athletes who made such significant contributions in the championship game.
