01/31/2002 - Updated 01:50 AM ET Arizona's Walton well-schooled in basketball By Greg Boeck, USA TODAY By Elaine Thompson, AP Luke Walton is averaging 14.4 points and 6.1 assists. He and his three brothers, all close in age, followed their father, Bill, everywhere during two seasons (1985-87) with the Celtics, which capped his Hall of Fame career. They hung out in the locker room, where they saw how Kevin McHale and Dennis Johnson prepared for games. They went to practices, where they witnessed Larry Bird's work habits. They rode the team bus, where they learned all about team chemistry from prankster Danny Ainge. They even joined the celebration when the Celtics climaxed their unselfish run to the NBA championship in 1986. That's perhaps where they got their biggest lesson of all in hoops: how to win. Bill Walton won two national championships at UCLA and NBA rings with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1977 and the Celtics nine years later. "I love to win," Luke says. "I like to do whatever it takes to win."

The Basketball Hall Of Fame
The basketball hall of fame, founded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, opened it's doors October, 1949, in a two-room office on the campus of Springfield College in Massachusetts, where James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. The first members were inducted in 1959 and construction on a building for the basketball hall of fame began two years later. But construction was stopped on the hall for lack of money. New fund-raising drives had to be started to complete the basketball hall of fame construction. The building finally opened on Feb. 17, 1968. From 1968 until 1985 the hall attracted 630,179 visitors. A new $11 million building in a different location in Springfield was opened to the public on June 30, 1985. In 2002, the Hall of Fame moved into its third building, a $45 million, 80,000-square-foot facility. Nominees for the basketball hall of fame are voted upon by a 24-member committee of trustees, media, and inducted members. If not elected within five years after nomination, a candidate can be considered by a special veterans committee after another wait of five years.

ill Walton, his family and friends are sitting beneath a flapping Grateful Dead banner in the tropical-forest backyard of his San Diego home discussing the day's news. ''Oh . . . I . . . love . . . reading . . . the . . . newspaper,'' Walton says in the same insufferably pompous-sounding voice he uses as a TV basketball analyst. He is quizzing his sons on what they read in the newspapers that day. One mentions an article about the friendship between Albert Einstein and the Indian poet-mystic Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore wrote of Einstein, ''My salutation is to him who knows me imperfect and loves me.'' Walton nods. Ah . . . yes. . . . That . . . reminds . . . me . . . of . . . something . . . Jerry . . .
