BEIJING Chinese basketball center Wang Zhizhi has been dismissed from the national team for "indiscipline" after he opted to continue his career in the United States rather than go on national duty, Chinese basketball officials said Wednesday.
Wang, who signed last week for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, had shown an "absence of professional standards, indiscipline and indifference to the interests of the nation," a harshly worded statement from the China Basketball Association (CBA) said.
"Because Wang Zhizhi lacked basic professional morals and patriotism, he lost the qualification to be a national team member. After research, a decision has been made to dismiss him from the China national men's basketball team," the CBA's statement said.
Wang had "made a wrong choice in not returning to represent China at international competitions," the CBA said.
The 2.15-meter (7ft 1in) star enraged the CBA by ignoring orders to join up with the national team for last month's world championships and the current Asian Games.

Advertisement Wang, who signed last week with the Clippers, has shown an "absence of professional standards, indiscipline and indifference to the interests of the nation," according to a statement by the China Basketball Association published in the Beijing Times and the Beijing Morning Post. "Wang Zhizhi will go to the NBA next week," said Wang, who led Rockets to their sixth successive title in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) on Wednesday after beating Shanghai Sharks 3-1 in the best of five finals. "It's a good thing for the Chinese basketball player and good chance for Wang to improve himself. I hope Wang Zhizhi could fit in the NBA as soon as possible," Wang added.
