CAN CHINA BOUNCE BACK FROM DEFEAT?
Asia's basketball champs have plenty to prove
By Anne Naham / Beijing C HINESE MILITARY TACTICIANS HAVE long relied on a slim, 4th-century-B.C. treatise entitled The Art of War, which preaches cleverness over brute force. Wang Fei is working to apply those same theories to winning basketball games. Not that the Chinese national coach is without big guns, but he knows that victory in the Asian Games in Bangkok next month will rely to a great extent on the right strategy. Wang is convinced that a humiliating loss to South Korea in last year's Asian Basketball Confederation Championships was caused by a lack of strategic planning. That defeat resulted in China failing for the first time to qualify for the World Championships, which were held in Greece earlier this year. Faced with the possibility of another clash with the South Koreans in Bangkok, the coach is focused on making sure history does not repeat itself. Watching over his shoulder will be millions of Chinese basketball fans, who have grown used to seeing their team shred Asian opposition like rice paper. They are unlikely to take a philosophical approach to another blow to national pride.

85. NBADraft.net -- Yi Jianlian Profile
Stefan Lorenz Sina Article (in Chinese) Translated by basketball Boards.netmember Tattoo Jianlian might become the next wang zhizhi and Yao Ming.
http://nbadraft.net/profiles/yijianlian.htm
Yi Jianlian
Birthdate: 1987
NBA Position: PF/C
Team: Guang Dong
Ht: 6-11
Wt: 220
Hometown: Shenzhen, China
Education: Liaoning Basketball School
2002 Stats

He is a good athlete with the right size, and shows soft touch and also silky moves playing on the outside. He just has to add weight. He is able to make several leaps in a few seconds and watching him practice, Yi shows the ability to hit a pull up mid range jumper as well as from the long distance. He is only fifteen years old, and there is a long way till the NBA, but he is guy to follow in the future.
-Romano Pettiti Yi Jianlian is a smooth left-hander with a delicate shooting touch that would remind you of Wang ZhiZhi. Yi runs the floor well and doesn't look out of place in the paint. He features some excellent low-post skills, including a jump hook. 6-11 at just 15, doctors expect him to grow to 7-2. Weights only 220 pounds, so he needs to put on another 30-40 pounds of muscle. Further he has to work on his defense, although he's a good shot blocker right now. He played at the Under-18 Tournament in Mannheim, Germany and averaged 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks mostly against players who are 3 years older than him. He also excelled at the adidas ABCD Camp in Teanick NJ in the summer of 2002. -Stefan Lorenz

In July, China's national team attended training camp at a basketball academy in Greaterattention focuses on wang zhizhi, a 7footer with enormous mobility.

Taking China to the hoop
A rag-tag team of retired NBA All Stars and also-rans gave the Chinese National squad a pre-Olympic workout, but medals weren't on the minds of the NBA marketing men. China is the meatiest market and mainlanders are already mad for Showtime.
By Ron Gluckman/Beijing C LYDE 'THE GLIDE' DREXLER nabs the ball from an opponent, flicks it to a teammate, then races up court for the return pass. He leaps high and glides to the hoop for a lay-up. Dream Teamer Drexler has made the same sort of play hundreds of times. But never upon this court, nor in this country. This time the basketball legend is putting his moves on Middle Kingdom, to the delight of a fervent crowd of fans in the Chinese capital. Drexler, one of the NBA's 50 greatest all-time players, with more than 20,000 points under his belt, appeared with the NBA Legends before 10,000 screaming fans at Beijing's Workers' Stadium in August, before continuing on a tri-city ten day tour of China that ended in Shanghai a week a later. It was not a make or break tournament game, but a potential marketing play for the NBA that brought Drexler, a Portland Trailblazers All Star and champion with the Houston Rockets to Beijing.

(in Opinion) Wang Becomes First Asian Player in NBA
By John Leicester/AG Nelson said foreign players normally take two years to adjust and Wang, like any other player, would have to earn a spot on the team. Chinese newspapers have bubbled with anticipation about Wang. A full-page article on March 29 in the China Sports Daily Dressed in a low-key argyle sweater at the news conference, Wang looked and sounded more like a shy college kid than a hotly sought-after recruit to the flashy NBA. When he accepted the Mavericks jersey from Nelson, Wang looked even gawkier by putting it on directly over his sweater. Top of This Page National News Section AsianWeek Home Feature ... Opinion

Wang's arrival in NBA transcends the sport
By Steve Friess
Special for USA TODAY BEIJING He's a basketball player, so he's supposed to be tall. But when 7-foot Wang Zhizhi strides through a Beijing restaurant en route to a private karaoke lounge to conduct an interview, it's hard not to be stunned by how close his head comes to the ceiling. The Chinese gape because Wang, 23, is one of the most famous basketball players in China. American tourists stare, too, wondering who the giant might be. They'll likely find out soon enough. Wang is in the final stages of securing a release from the top military basketball team in China to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, which could occur as early as Thursday. He's likely to be followed this year or next by 7-6 center Yao Ming, 20, as the first two Asian players in the NBA. Both already have endorsement contracts with Nike and are receiving either representation or advice from Bill Duffy Associates, a San Francisco-based basketball talent agency.

DREAMING OF CHICAGO
The first Asian star in the NBA?
S INCE HIS FATHER (WANG Weijun, 1.96 m tall [6 ft 5 in]) and mother (Ren Huanzhen, 1.86 m [6 ft 1 in]) were both basketball players, it was perhaps only natural for Chinese star Wang Zhizhi to forge a career in lay-ups and slam-dunks. At 2.16 m (7 ft 1 in), Wang plays for the Bayi Rockets in China's Hilton League and is widely regarded as Asia's best shot at the NBA. He spoke to Asiaweek Contributor Anne Naham about his chances, the Chinese national team and his favorite player (it isn't Michael Jordan). How do you feel about this NBA attention? Nervous, yet not nervous. I am confident about my basketball abilities. I know I can be a good player, but I am still a bit uncertain about it all, of course. What do you think are your chances of going to the U.S.?

    Doc Rivers to the Clippers?
[excerpt] Magic coach Doc Rivers is tired of questions about his future and insists he is staying in Orlando. Still, his name has been mentioned in connection with coaching vacancies with the Hawks and Clippers and in connection with the Bulls' G.M. position. Additionally, he has long been rumored to be the Knicks' future head man. "The problem with me is I played with too many freaking teams," Rivers quipped. . . .
