History
Inspired by major league baseball's annual mid-season All-Star Game, league public relations director Haskell Cohen proposed that the NBA should stage a similar game. The league's president, Maurice Podoloff, agreed, and Boston Celtics owner Walter Brown offered the use of Boston Garden at no charge. The first game was played in Boston on March 2, 1951. It drew 10,094 fans. In 1984, a slam-dunk competition was added the day before the game and a three-point shooting competition was added in 1986. Top of page

Owner of 17 WVU records, he led the Mountaineers to three of its greatest seasons on the hardwood. With a three-year mark of 61-12 while West was a regular, West Virginia earned three straight NCAA berths and came within two points of winning the national championship in 1959. That 1959 team, which defeated Dartmouth, St. Joseph's, Boston University and Louisville to get to the finals, owns the school record of 29 wins in a single season. A three-time scoring leader for the Mountaineers, West earned second-team All-America honors from the Helms Foundation and Converse for averaging 17.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game during his sophomore season. The next two seasons, West earned consensus All-America honors, including a senior season in which he averaged 29.3 points and 16.5 rebounds per game.

By JOHN NADEL, AP Sports Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jerry West, architect of the Los Angeles Lakers' team going for its third straight NBA title, has agreed to run the Memphis Grizzlies, a source close to the Lakers said Monday. The Grizzlies announced plans to hold "a special press conference to make a significant announcement" Tuesday, but they wouldn't elaborate further. On condition of anonymity, the source said West agreed to leave his $1 million-a-year job as a Lakers consultant to work for the Grizzlies. Memphis had been pursuing the former NBA great for weeks, hoping to hire him as head of basketball operations. The team fired general manager Billy Knight this month. Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley, reached through his office in Chicago, refused comment except to say he would attend the news conference. "Yes, I'm going to be there," he said. West's new job figures to be quite a challenge. Formed as an expansion team in 1995, the Grizzlies, who moved from Vancouver to Memphis before this season, have never come close to making the playoffs. Their 23-59 record this season tied for the best in franchise history. West seldom gives interviews and is known for having a difficult time making up his mind.
