As Serge Grimaux stated I would like to thank World Champion, GM Garry Kasparovas well as GM Viswanathan anand 2 World chess Player and twice chess Oscar
http://www.tnqsponsorship.com/chess1999.html
We reproduce below the exact Press Release on the forthcoming World Chess Championship 1999. The Ultimate World Chess Championship
GM Garry Kasparov Vs GM Viswanathan Anand
The Millenium Battle of the Minds!
After several weeks of negotiations Serge Grimaux proudly announced today that World Champion GM Garry Kasparov and Challenger GM Viswanathan Anand, #2 World Player and two time Chess Oscar Winner, both signed a very detailed and professionally prepared contract whereby the World Champion will defend his title against the Challenger in a World Championship to be held in the last quarter of this year. Bessel Kok, Chairman of the Organizing Committee further composed of GM Fridrik Olafsson and Dr. William Wirth stated: This is the Championship everybody has been waiting for and which certainly will be considered as the Millennnium Battle of the Minds. Sixteen games will be played. Incase of a draw GM Kasparov will retain his title. The Prize Fund will be of US$3,000,000. The signatories to the agreement have agreed to an exciting format where instead doff granting the runner-up of the 1999 World Championship an automatic rematch, there will instead be a new Challenger Cycle in 2000 the winner of which will be nominated the Challenger for the next World Championship title scheduled for 2001.

4. Vishwanathan Anand Fan Club Page
The world champion proved too good for Alexei Shirov in the final of the tournament.
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~hde/anand.html
Vishwanathan Anand fan club page
This is an unofficial page made by one of Anand's many fans around the world. Last updated 10 November 1998. Anand won the Fontys tournament in Tilburg, scoring 4 wins (all as White), 7 draws, and no losses. Leko and Sadler were also undefeated, but with fewer wins. See the Fontys web site for more information and for pictures of our hero. Put that together with Anand's other major tournament victories in 1998, and it sure looks like Anand is the best in the world! The Linares tournament he won was particularly impressive, a Category 21 event pitting the seven best players in the world against each other in a double-round-robin format (see the cross-table below). Anand also won the grandmaster tournament in Madrid and tied for first at Wijk aan Zee this year. Sure, Karpov and Kasparov both have plausible claims to the World Championship, and both are great players. Affable gentleman that he is, Anand has pretty much steered clear of the debate over whose "World Championship" tournament is more valid, and simply piles up the wins. Here's the Linares cross-table: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Anand 7.5 xx 1= 0= == 1= =1 =1 Shirov 7.0 0= xx == =1 10 10 11 Kasparov 6.5 1= == xx == == == == Kramnik 6.5 == =0 == xx =1 == 1= Svidler 5.5 0= 01 == =0 xx 10 =1 Ivanchuk 5.0 =0 01 == == 01 xx 0= Topalov 4.0 =0 00 == 0= =0 1= xx

In Part VI of the series, we examine the evolution of the world championship of chess, leading up to Anand's own entry into the cycle. 8. Karpov Defeats Anand In Game 1 Of World Chess Championship
Karpov defeats anand in Game 1 of World chess Championship. Terrible News, as Karpovdefeats anand vishwanathan in Game 1 of FIDE World chess Championship
http://www.shamema.com/karp-ana.htm
Karpov defeats Anand in Game 1 of World Chess Championship
Terrible News, as Karpov defeats Anand Vishwanathan in Game 1 of "FIDE World Chess Championship" The euphoria which arose from Anand's nine game long victory over Michael Adams (a victory which was necessary for the so-called "FIDE World Championship" to have any credibility) has turned to gloom as Karpov (whom everyone thought would be defeated by Anand) won their first game in a marathon 108 moves. By the way, I know, of course, that Anand's first name is Anand. I posted that question as an intended joke and was surprised at the wide variety of answers I received. I first became aware of the issue when Peng ZhaoQin, that famous Dutch chessplayer, asked this question of Anand during the 1989 Asian Team Championship in Genting Highlands, Malaysia. Although in India sometimes the family name goes first and the given name last, and it could go either way, in Anand's case, his family name is Vishwanathan and his given name is Anand. He just allows himself to be called Anand, because Vishwanathan is too difficult. I have posted charts of the FIDE World Championship at http://www.samsloan.com/fide1997.htm and at http://www.ishipress.com/fide-ch4.htm

Mr Cool gets his due
Dibyendu Barua I've known Anand since 1982. He was around 15 years old at the time, and we met for the first time at the National Junior Championships in Delhi. That was a time of rapid progress in his career shortly thereafter, he won the national championships, then the World Junior Championships, and went on to achieve his International Master and Grand Master norms in short order. And now he is World Champion the only Asian to achieve the feat, and in fact the only non-Russian to hold the title since Bobby Fischer. Even when I first saw him play, Anand used to play very fast, prompting us to christen him the 'Lightning Kid'. His game was always characterised by courage, by boldness. He would take just a few seconds to assess the position and respond to his opponent's moves. You might have thought, at the time, that it was just that he was so young but it is noteworthy that after all these years, that ability to play accurately at high speed is still a characteristic of his game. In fact, he is easily the most accomplished blitz player in the international chess arena. At the same time, without forsaking his speed, he has improved his all-round game tremendously. He has also learnt the value of caution, when required thus, you find him more willing, these days, to take some time to analyse a tricky position. Earlier, because of the sheer speed at which he played, he would miss out on some winning positions, he would falter during crucial moments. But not any more today, he has the right balance between speed and caution, and that makes him an even more finished player. In fact, today there are very few players on the circuit who can match his ability in the opening and middle games. Thanks to his mastery of these two crucial aspects, and his speed of thought at the end, he is now one of the most dangerous opponents on the international circuit.

Opening Gambit
Not meaning to spoil things for anyone, mind but the fact remains that India has no world champion by the name of Vishwanathan Anand. But yes, India does possess and takes great pride in a certain Anand Vishwanathan, newly-crowned world champion in the game of 64 squares. Vishwanathan is the father, Anand the son. The mixup occured once he began going abroad. 'Anand V' became, thanks to the bureaucratic policy of putting the initial first, 'V Anand', on his passport and other documents. And when that was expanded, it became Vishwanathan Anand duly shortened to Vishy. Initially, Anand took some trouble to point out the error. But along the way, he came to like the name 'Vishy', figured that carrying his father's name was a matter of pride, and let the name stick. For the record, Anand was born on December 11, 1969, to Vishwanathan, who retired as General Manager, Southern Railways, and Susheela, housewife and chess afficionado. It was the latter who, when Anand was five, initiated him into the mysteries of the game, and oversaw his early development. At the time, Chennai (Madras, as it was then called) had a flourishing chess culture, thanks to the presence of Manuel Aaron, India's first ever international master, and Ravi Kumar, India's second IM. The hallmark of great achievers, in any field, is that they build up a legend of their own. There is, thus, the story of Sunil Gavaskar learning cricket in a narrow gully, and honing his ability to play with a straight bat because the slightest deviation from that practise could bring with it a broken window, and inevitable chastisement. Or the story of the young Sachin Tendulkar batting in the nets with a one rupee coin placed on his stumps, as reward for any bowler who could knock it off. Sachin, we are told, became the neighbourhood plutocrat by default, pouching the coins after defending his stumps against all comers.
