Brain Vs Bytes Kramnik's Feat
Vishwanathan Anand Brain Vs Bytes As the Garry Kasparov-Deep Blue rematch unfolds, I am reminded of an old Russian joke about a man playing chess on the beach with his dog. Soon an amazed crowd gathered, an said: "How remarkable!" The man angrily protested. "What's so remarkable?" I am leading three game to one!" Until a few years ago, this joke could have been told about chess-playing computers. Computers, who could calculate very accurately, were hopelessly dogmatic. They stuck rigidly to the relative values of the pieces and went after every piece they could find. Chess, however, is not bean-counting. Every chess player not also learns that they are only to guide, not govern. Computers were totally unable to deal with the variables, let alone conceive a strategic plan. A human rarely selects a move on the basis of death-defying calculation. Seeing 10 moves ahead does occur from time to time, but only in special situations. Humans hardly ever look at every move in a position. If a position contains, say 30 moves, a human would consider about five or six. This is a highly efficient method, since it is most likely that other moves are inferior. However, this efficiency comes at a price. Just as computers blindly stick to their rules, humans often overlook many exceptions to the rule. Moves that don't conform to known patterns are often ignored.

Web Editor Vishwanathan Anand A Vishwanathan Anand might have no eccentricities of Bobby Fisher, as this 25-year-old becomes the first non-Russian since the maverick American Grand Master in 1972 to win the world chess title. Anand's rise along the chess firmaments has been as spectacular as it has been inspirational to a whole new generation of young emerging Indian chess players who have an ideal model to look up to and emulate. As noticeable with most of the Indians, Anand also draws his stimulation from his parents father K.Vishwanathan and more often than not mother Sushila, who was his first ever chess teacher. Anand's play and personality echoes the being there of his parents at the match venue. At the FIDE cycle quarter finals last year, Anand had Kamsky cornered, wanting just a point from three games to move into the next stage, but he curiously gave and later confessed to 'missing my parents' who were back home in Madras.

Glory days for Anand
Vishwanathan Anand's success at the World Chess Championships was just the year-end achievement needed to banish memories of India's sporting annus horribilus. By patiently adopting the French defence against a recklessly gung-ho Alexei Shirov to become the 15th world chess champion, the 31-year old has, however, done much more than merely overshadow cricket's hall of shame, circa 2000, or make amends for his countrymen's (and women's) lean pickings at the Sydney Olympics. Indeed, Anand has in a sense reasserted India's ancient claim to the origins of this most cerebral of sports. And by beating the Spaniard to the $660,000 prize, he has comprehensively quelled all echoes of the cynical voices that crescendoed during his barren patch in 1999, that issued ominous warnings of an early end to the career of India's first grandmaster. Congratulations, Vishwanathan Anand. To be sure, the Tiger from Madras had all along been the favourite. With Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov and Vladimir Kramnik not participating, through the knockout matches he had to field queries about his anticipated win, about the suddenly discounted value of the title. Anand, rightly, has consistently waved away these qualifications. Kasparov may still be the greatest chess champion of our times, Kramnik may be the man knocking at the door, a visibly paler Karpov may be a grand survivor...but Anand, after some spectacular wins since 1987, has affixed his thumbprint in the record books.

Chess: Grandmaster Harikrishna
leads a pack of world-beaters Farwa Imam Ali Pendyala Harikrishna, 15, has put Indian chess in the spotlight again. The Guntur lad made history first by becoming the youngest Indian Grandmaster, beating the record of his idol Vishwanathan Anand who had done it at 18. Close on the heels of this achievement came his triumph in the Commonwealth Chess Championship in London. "I expected him to become a Grandmaster even earlier," says S. Vijayalakshmi, India's first woman Grandmaster (WGM) from Chennai.
Harikrishna had completed his third GM norm in the Asian Chess Championship in Calcutta earlier this month but had been blissfully unaware of his feat. He will formally apply for the title of GM after returning from London.
Harikrishna (left) plays without exhibiting too many of his weaknesses, says K. sasikiran. "he has the chance to make it to the top 10."
Ever since Anand of Chennai started making headlines at the international level, there has been a silent revolution in the country of the game's origin, especially in south India. Making giant leaps in their career, besides Harikrishna, have been people like Koneru Humpy of Andhra Pradesh and K. Sasikiran, Vijayalakshmi, her sister S. Meenakshi and Aarthie Ramaswamy of Tamil Nadu. "There is talent everywhere," says Vijayalakshmi, 22, who has been successfully defending her national title for the last five years. "The spurt of talent down south may be because of Anand proving himself. There has been a sea-change in the status of the game over the last decade. Youngsters feel driven to perform well because of the shining examples before them."

He beat Dreev and then ran into Karpov in the quarterfinals where he lost. Then he lost to Gata Kamsky in 1994 at Sanghinagar and also lost to Karpov again in the 1998 finals. Anand, "the one man Indian Chess revolution" has also authored "My Best Games of Chess". This greatest sportsman India has ever produced, brought the World Chess Championship title to the Asian Continent on the Christmas eve of 2000, to assume himself a place in history and has completed a personal and common mission through his World Chess Title triumph held at Tehran by beating Spain's Alexie Shirov 3.5-0.5 in a dominating and ruthless show of his brain power.

November 28, 2000 NEW DELHI(UNB/AP) - India's grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand starts as the favorite in the World Chess Championship that opens Monday, with 100 men from 50 countries playing for the dlrs 660,000 winner's purse in the finals in Iran next month. The world's top two chess grandmasters, Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik, along with their Russian compatriot Anatoly Karpov, have decided to skip the championship, whose first and second rounds are being played at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Delhi.
Kasparov broke away from FIDE, the World Chess Federation, in 1993; and Kramnik is under contract to braingames.net, which must approve his matches, but has not rule out a matchup against the FIDE champion.
he reigning champion, Alexander Khalifman of Russia, who won last year's knockout tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, is ranked 31st in the world. He has a reputation as a solid, steady player, but has repeatedly been troubled by Anand, who is ranked third.
The Indian grandmaster broke into the chess limelight as a teen-ager by winning the 1987 world Juniors Crown in the Philippines. He has a reputation for perfect technical expertise, blended with an exceptional positional sense and a machinelike calculating ability. Anand plays both the close and open game with ease and smells trouble early.
