Anand draws with Adams in semis: World chess championships
NEW DELHI, Dec 13: The Indian grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand played out a draw against Michael Adams of England in the first game of the FIDE world chess championships semi-final here on Tuesday night.
In the other semi-final, Spanish veteran Alexei Shirov scored a 44-move win over 17-year-old Russian prodigy Alexander Grischuk to take an early lead in the four-game match.
Playing a rare Petroff defence, Anand handed Adams a slight edge before defending well in the middle game to settle for a 0.5-0.5 verdict in the first of four games.
"Adams had a better position in the opening, I got some counterplay, but it was not a very satisfactory position," Anand said.
"I guess it was the right time for me to make the offer for a draw."
Shirov paid tribute to his young opponent, saying the teenager had a bright future.
"Grischuk played excellent and attacked well," Shirov said. "I know it is not going to be easy for me in the remaining games."
The winners will contest the final in the Iranian capital of Tehran later this month.

Anand, playing blacks, agreed for the draw with Rustam Kasimdzhaanov of Uzbekistan while Xu Yuhua and Antoneta Stefanova of Bulgaria called for truce after a spirited attempt from both the players to gain the upper hand. "There is no point in continuing when the position leads to nowhere," Anand and Rustam said after the match as they called truce in the 15th move itself with material and space occupancy of both players being nearly equal.

Hritik Roshan Confused Over Controversy The controversy over Hritik's unflattering statements about Nepal and her people was met by a great deal of fury by demonstrations against the actor. On Saturday 30th December the Nepal Government has stated that the entire controversy has been fired due to a blunder by the press. Hritik Roshan on his part had denied making any statements contrary to the integrity of Nepal or her people. Statements by his father Rakesh Roshan also made similar claims. Hritik's initial triumph over the success of Kaho Na Pyaar Hai was soured by the attempt at murder on his father Rakesh Roshan. Now the wedding celebrations and honeymoon have been marred by the controversy. Shootout At Red Fort There was a shootout at Red Fort on Saturday, 23rd of December 2000. Archery Boat Race Chess Ancient Indian Games ... Kabaddi Archery: One of the prominent and popular indigenous sports of the state of Meghalaya is archery. Archery is an intrinsic part of the culture of the local people, and plays a principal role in their festivals. The bows and gut are made of a special bamboo, and are of varying lengths and sizes. The arrows are made from special reeds, topped with a pointed metal cap, using eagle feathers. The feathers are interwoven near the neck on four sides, this part of arrow - making being the domain of the women.
The target is made from a certain kind of grass, and is circular in shape, 8 to 10 inches high and 3 inches in diameter. The target is affixed on a thin bamboo pole, at a height of 3 1/2 ft from the ground. A notch is made at the base of the pole and any arrow hitting below the notch, is not counted for points. The distance exceeds 30 meters. There are three ways of conducting this contest : individual competition, team competition, and fast and slow shooting. Boat Race: The grand festival of Onam, is celebrated with great zest, in the picturesque state of Kerala, in the Malayalam month of Chingam. The most exciting part of this festival is the snake boat race, held at various places in the state, on the palm - fringed waters. The boats used in this thrilling contest of

The distance wasn't much in geographical terms; in every other way, the distance couldn't have been greater. The good news from the tournament was the diversity of talent: The South was richly represented, as could be expected, but there were winners from Bihar, Rajasthan and even Manipur. The bad news? Given the low priority chess holds in these states, there's little to suggest that these winners have any future. Winning the world championship made Anand richer by $660,000; enough, perhaps, to take care of all the participants at the national meet for one year. Parents and guardians say the cost of bringing up a chess player is between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh every year. This includes coaches' charges (mostly Rs 100 per sitting), tournament appearance money, books and other periodicals and travel allowance. It's not a small sum of money and it's not easy to find.

Queen Bee India's first Woman Grandmaster has the talent and temperament to go further By Amarnath K. Menon W oman Grandmaster: how illustrious is that? Advocates of politically correct speech may turn up their noses. "Woman" and "master" don't quite go together. Besides, the title is given in recognition of a woman achieving a high standard in a mindsport where, to be honest, there should be no gender distinction. But do chess buffs care? They know only the language of the chequered board and passionately argue that the WGM, as the title is popularly called, is another jewel added to the crown of Indian chess, one which has been too long coming. The only reason for such a long wait could be that women were traditionally not encouraged to excel in a game that involved outwitting a man across the board. Suddenly, one stroke from a petite 21-year-old has changed all that. Chennai-based Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi became the first Indian WGM this week, and now is trying to go where no other Indian woman player has gone before. The three-time National champion is only one victory away from becoming the first-ever Indian woman to win a men's International Master (IM) title, and it could come any time soon.

The result was enough to leave them alone at the top for the combined prize as they had gone into the final round with a healthy lead over third-place Vishwanathan Anand. Topalov won the blindfold event and Kramnik split the rapid honors with Boris Gelfand.
But Kramnik was near total victory as he worked Leko over on the ropes, while Topalov made a horrible blunder in the last round that seemed to spoil a brilliant event ...

DH News Service BANGALORE, Dec 13 Wanna get a peek into the persona of one of the formidable heroes of chess?
Radio City 91 FM will help you do precisely that. For Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand will be on the hotseat on Big Mouth, to be aired on December 15 from 6 pm onwards on Radio City.
The champion of chess will recollect the good old days when he played the game with his mother and siblings, field questions on his current standing in chess and the future of the game in the country. All this interspersed with some great music.
For those who came in late, Anand honed his chess skills by participating in a regular chess quiz aired by the Philippines television (where his father was posted in 1970s). His unchecked victories forced the TV staff to request him to stop participating in the show so that others could win as well!
The interview promises to be a treat to sports enthusiasts by offering fresh insight into his personality. But the fare is not just heavy stuff. The ace chessman will also speak about his favourite music and bands that sets him rocking. But we won’t spill the beans on that. For catch Vishwanathan on Radio City.

The Indian Grandmaster got a perfect Christmas and New Years gift as well as a slightly belated birthday gift for his 31st birthday when he defeated the desperate and reckless Spaniard Shirov. Anand had drawn the first game with black pieces and then won the next one with white. In the third game Anand registered another win with black, his first with the black pieces, in the Championships, and finally sealed the title with another win with white pieces. It was his sixth win in eight games with white pieces in these Championships. The only two players who avoided defeat when Anand had white in classical games were Khalifman and Michael Adams. The championship ended Anand's great quest for the World title. He also completed an incredible Grand Slam in the process. He had won the World Blitz Cup in Warsaw early this year and that was followed up with wins in the World rapids in Haifa and then the World Cup in Shenyang. The World Championships in New Delhi and Teheran completed an incredible year for Anand. It also ended years of Russian monopoly on the title.
