When he overwhelmed Spassky in 1972, he became the only American world titlist and, according to a consensus of grandmasters, the strongest chess player in history. From then until 1992, Fischer did not play a single game of chess in public. He forfeited his world title in 1975 and turned down lucrative offers to play again. In 1992, he was indicted for participating in a match with Spassky in Yugoslavia, against which the United States had an economic boycott. Fischart, Johann

Robert J. Fischer
"The world's greatest Chess player" Robert James Fischer was born in Chicago, Illinois at the Michael Reese Hospital by the banks of Lake Michigan on March 9th, 1943. His father Gerhardth Fischer was born in Berlin, Germany in 1909, he was a biophysicist. His mother was Regina Wender. They separated when Bobby was 2 years old, and Regina had custody of Bobby and his older sister Joan who was then 7 years old. She was a qualified registered Nurse and wanted to take a Master's Degree at New York University in Nursing Education. She decided to move to Brooklyn. It is there that the legend of the world's greatest Chess player begins. On May 1949, Bobby and his sister Joan learned how to play the game with a Chess set given to them as a present. Both, six and eleven, learned the moves from the instructions that went with the set. Even as a six-year-old, Bobby became increasingly fascinated with Chess and enjoyed enough success in solving its complexities. By age seven, he was so

By Peter Nicholas and Clea Benson Inquirer Staff Writers He was the ultimate cold warrior, humbling the mighty Soviet chess establishment through his own genius and a pounding ambition to be the greatest player in the world. At a time when competition with the Soviets was measured in moon landings and missile counts, Bobby Fischer beat the Russians' best. But Fischer's own government once believed his mother might be a Soviet spy, and that Moscow might have tried to enlist young Bobby as well. FBI records obtained by The Inquirer under the Freedom of Information Act show that intermittently, from the 1940s to the 1970s, the Fischers were being watched.

Searching for Bobby Fischer: The World of Chess, Observed by the Father of a Chess Prodigy by Fred Waitzkin Reviewed by Jerry Lawson (Review appeared originally in Northwest Chess Mr. Waitzkin's book, recently reprinted in paperback, provides an extraordinarily interesting look at the contemporary chess scene. The author is not a strong player, but he is an excellent writer, with a good eye for the revealing detail and the illuminating simile. He describes the stress of a top-level master game in the following way: "It must have been like trying to compose a sonnet with a guillotine blade poised to fall if the verse didn't come up to Shakespeare's." Waitzkin is a writer living in Manhattan who, like millions of others, had his interest in chess piqued by the 1972 Fischer/Spassky World Championship match. Like hundreds of thousands of others, at that time he played enough chess with his friends to convince himself that he was a very good player. His illusion lasted only until his first trip to a chess coffeehouse in Greenwich Village, where he played "a pimply adolescent who after twenty minutes caught on to my methodical bob-and-weave style and began to read a newspaper." This experience brought him back to earth, and inspired him to put his chess set away for 10 years, when his six year old son asked him to teach him the game. Much of the book chronicles the development of Waitzkin's son, Josh, an elementary school student, into the top rated child of his age in the nation, an Expert level player and eventual national scholastic champion.

Chess Grandmaster Bobby Fischer
Applauds 911 Attacks
By David Bamber and Chris Hastings
The Telegraph - London
Bobby Fischer, the reclusive American chess grandmaster, has broken years of silence to support the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
The Telegraph has discovered that Mr Fischer gave an interview to an obscure radio station in the Philippines hours after the events on September 11.
Mr Fischer is already wanted for questioning by the FBI for breaking UN sanctions by taking part in a chess match in Serbia against Boris Spassky in 1992 - his first for 20 years.
In his interview on September 11 with Radio Bombo in Baguio City, Mr Fischer said: "This is all wonderful news. It is time to finish off the US once and for all.
"I was happy and could not believe what was happening. All the crimes the US has committed in the world. This just shows, what goes around comes around, even to the US.
"I applaud the act. The US and Israel have been slaughtering the Palestinians for years. Now it is coming back at the US."
Mr Fischer, 58, also attacked Israel and "Jews" who he claimed were responsible for "bringing" the attack on the World Trade Centre. He gave the interview because he is a friend of Pablo Mercado, the station manager. They met through their mutual friend Eugene Torre, the Filipino chess grandmaster.

The madness of King Bobby - part two
Rene Chun Sunday January 12, 2003
Fischer returned to a hero's welcome. In a televised ceremony at New York's City Hall, Mayor John Lindsay presented him with the key to the city. Shelby Lyman recalls: 'Here's Bobby in his great moment of triumph. He's resplendent in this beautiful suit. The world is his: he's young, handsome, women adore him, there's all this money if he wants it. And he later said to a reporter, "The creeps are beginning to gather." He was referring to press, lawyers, agents - everyone he thought was out to take advantage of him. After that his whole life was about avoiding the creeps.' Fischer didn't in fact get the full hero treatment. 'I was never invited to the White House,' he said in one of his radio interviews. 'They invited that Olympic Russian gymnast - that little Communist, Olga Korbut.' In his 11 September 2001 broadcast he elaborated. 'Look what I have done for the US. Nobody has single-handedly done more for the US than me. When I won the world championship, in 1972, the United States had an image of, you know, a football country, a baseball country, but nobody thought of it as an intellectual country. I turned all that around single-handedly, right? But I was useful then because there was the Cold War, right? But now I'm not useful any more. You see, the Cold War is over and now they want to wipe me out, steal everything I have, and put me in prison.'

Chess in the media:
Bobby Fischer redux
by John Hillery
No chess figure can draw media attention like Bobby Fischer. Though he has not returned to play (and there is no likelihood he ever will), an article by Rene Chun in the December Atlantic Monthly again points the spotlight at the second pride and sorrow of chess. Not surprisingly, much attention is given to Fischer's ... odd political views. He is apparently sincere in believing that a world-wide Jewish conspiracy divides its time equally between stealing everyone's money (communism was, of course, a Jewish front), sacrificing children, and persecuting Bobby Fischer. He seems not to have contradictions of this worldview, such as why, if the Secret Masters are so powerful, they allow Fischer to go around revealing their secrets. The larger part of the article does, however, recount Fischer's chess career. It is done fairly well, though the author is clearly not a chess player. (To assert that Spassky "easily" won the first game in Reykjavik is commit a terminological inexactitude). Errors are less often of fact than of emphasis. For example, to accuse Fischer of reneging on commitments and demanding more money as an excuse not to play during the 1960s is slightly anachronistic. He certainly did this after 1972, but in hindsight, many of his demands during the 1960s for more prize money, better playing conditions, and a more equitable balance of power between players and organizers do not look all that unreasonable.

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess > Customer Review #1: For the absolute beginner
Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess is a beginners puzzle book. Each page has a diagram which asks the reader to chose the best move. Most of these puzzles revolve around check mate and are very basic 1-move attacks or defenses. The answers can then be seen on the following page. I feel that this book is helpful for those individuals who have just begun the game of chess. The tests within give the beginner an opportunity to see some of the common mating patterns. And starting with Check Mate is a fun way to start the learning process. There is nothing more satisfying that capturing the enemy king! Having said this, I do not feel that this book is a very good learning tool. There is not enough commentary to explain the ideas and principles of check mate that the book focuses on. You just look at the pictures and go from there.

Bobby Fischer: His Approach to Chess (Cadogan Chess Books) > Customer Review #1: Excellent book to synthesize elements of chess
This book will change the way you approach chess regardless of your playing level. As noted by previous readers, Elie Agur has done a nice job of systematically analyzing Fischers approach to chess into clear parts (e.g., pawn structures, traps, typical manuevores) clearly for the reader to grasp. The usefulness of this catagorization goes beyond having to fill up a content page. What has not been said is that reading this book actually helps you to integrate almost all the chess concepts you learnt (e.g., tactics, positional chess, etc.) but never know how to go about applying them. For the more advanced player, I would recommend you taking a look at how Agur, given a chess position with a variety of candidate moves, manage to compare and contrast Fischers style with other schools of playing chess (e.g., Karpov and Capablanca). This is interesting in itself as this is one clear evidence of chess style at work, and that no particular style is necessarily the best (although Fischers style has been known to be the most accurate and straightforward in selection of candidate moves).

MPAA Classification:
PG (Mild profanity)
Theatrical Aspect Ratio: Cast: Max Pomeranc, Joe Mantegna, Joan Allen, Ben Kingsley, Laurence Fishburne
Director: Steven Zaillian
Producers: Scott Rudin and William Horberg
Screenplay: Steven Zaillian based on the book by Fred Waitzkin
Cinematography: Conrad L. Hall
Music: James Horner U.S. Distributor: Paramount Pictures At the tender age of seven, Josh Waitzkin (Max Pomeranc) becomes fascinated by the game of chess. Without giving up little league baseball, he learns how to play, hanging out with Vinnie (Laurence Fishburne) and a group of speed chess hustlers who occupy nearby Washington Square. It isn't long before Josh is able to beat them all. His father, looking to take him to the next level, employs ex-chess master Bruce Pandolfini (Ben Kingsley) as a teacher. Under Pandolfini, Josh matures as a player, and, for the first time, he starts to fear losing. Searching for Bobby Fischer is based on the true life story of Josh Waitzkin who, at the age of sixteen, is currently the highest-ranked American player under eighteen. It isn't just Josh's tale, however. The name and image of the mysterious chess genius Bobby Fischer infiltrate this movie. Fischer is as much an icon to this game as Babe Ruth is to baseball.
