Each page has a diagram which asks the reader to chose the best move. Most of these puzzles revolve around check mate and are very basic 1-move attacks or defenses. The answers can then be seen on the following page. I feel that this book is helpful for those individuals who have just begun the game of chess. The tests within give the beginner an opportunity to see some of the common mating patterns. And starting with Check Mate is a fun way to start the learning process. There is nothing more satisfying that capturing the enemy king! Having said this, I do not feel that this book is a very good learning tool. There is not enough commentary to explain the ideas and principles of check mate that the book focuses on. You just look at the pictures and go from there.

Chess legend Bobby Fischer, who has not been seen in public for nine years, is playing fellow Grandmasters anonymously on the web, according to a newspaper report. British Grandmaster Nigel Short has told The Sunday Telegraph he believes he has faced the American former world champion in almost 50 internet games in the past year. Fischer retreated from public view after taking the world title in possibly the most famous match of all time, a Cold War battle against Russian world champion Boris Spassky in 1972. Since then his whereabouts have remained a mystery and he has surfaced only once - in 1992 - for a 20th anniversary rematch in Yugoslavia with a $5m prize, which he won.

Chess Grandmaster Nigel Short, who in 1993 challenged Russian Garry Kasparov for the world title, told the Telegraph he was almost certain he had played Fischer on the web.

FBI feared chess prodigy Bobby Fischer was recruited by Soviets
an Associated Press report 11/17/02 PHILADELPHIA - Bobby Fischer, the eccentric chess prodigy who dueled Soviet grand masters and won a world title in 1972, was investigated by FBI agents who suspected his mother was a communist spy, according to the bureau's records. FBI files obtained by The Philadelphia Inquirer under the Freedom of Information Act show that the government watched the Fischer family for three decades, and at one point feared that Soviet agents had tried to recruit Fischer himself. The bureau ultimately concluded that his mother, Regina Fischer, was not a spy, but only after years of researching her history, reading her mail, studying her canceled checks and questioning her neighbors. "They made it hard for her to keep a job," said her son-in-law, Russell Targ, a physicist in Palo Alto, Calif. The FBI was especially interested in Bobby Fischer's 1958 trip to play chess in Russia. An agent posed as a student journalist to interview producers of the TV show "I've Got a Secret," which featured Fischer before he left and paid his plane fare.

878 Printable Games played by Bobby Fischer Welcome. We originally thought to write something funny about Fischer, but We simply could not bring ourselves to do so. He is too good of a chess player for us to make fun of. Instead, I put a little story about Fischer and some of his games that you can print to play on your free time. - SoundKeepers At 41, Fischer lives a reclusive existence in Pasadena, Calif., where friends say he fears a KGB assassination plot. Keeping to his long-standing habit of declining interviews, he has refused to comment publicly on the current world championship. The only chess player ever to appear on the covers of Life, Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated has not been seen in public for years and reportedly has no fixed address. He stays in the homes of close friends-who are equally publicity-shy on his behalf. Former grandmaster Peter Biyiasis, who briefly entertained Fischer in his San Francisco home in 1981, described him as "the best player ever to walk the face of the earth." During Fischer's stay the two played more than 100 speed games, all of which the former world champion won. Observed Biyiasis: "If anything, Bobby has gotten better. He is like a machine." As well, many see him as an eccentric. In 1981 Pasadena police found him wandering on a highway and charged him with vagrancy. He spent two days in jail and later wrote a booklet about the experience, entitled I Was Tortured in the Pasadena Jailhouse!, which has become a collector's item in chess circles. Friends say that he avoids doctors as assiduously as he does the press. As well, he was a member of the fundamentalist Worldwide Church of God, has frequented Nazi-oriented bookshops and, according to friends, fears a Moscow-based Jewish conspiracy to take over the world.

CHESS - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW! Robert James ("Bobby") Fischer (1943 - ) What can you say about Bobby Fischer?! Eccentric, consumed by his passion for chess, possessed of an incredible IQ of 180 (140 is considered to be exceptional), and an unbelievable memory. Bobby's parents split up when he was two, and he necessarily had to learn to amuse himself. At six he found a chess set and taught himself to play. Throughout school, he had to win, whatever he tried, be it baseball or tennis. One teacher commented that if he had been born next to a swimming pool, he would have become a swimming champion, but it has to be said that chess ideally suited his amazing, but disproportionate talents. Sadly, he never played again for many years, losing his title by default. He became a recluse, surfacing only briefly from time to time, mostly to make absurd accusations on various topics on day-time dial-in chat shows on American radio. He did play (and win) a rematch with Spassky in 1992, and is reputed to play chess on the Internet (see Internet Chess Club His feats of memory are many and varied. He could not only recall

"I am 99 percent sure that I have been playing against the chess legend," wrote Nigel Short in Sunday's London Daily Telegraph. "It's tremendously exciting." The two have been meeting on the Internet Chess Club (ICC), an online gathering place for chess amateurs and professionals alike, including many of the game's elite players, called grandmasters. http://www.excaliburelectronics.com/bio_fischer.html
Bobby Fischer Robert James (Bobby) Fischer (1943 - ) is universally considered to have been one of the best players in the history of chess. Many feel that he was the best ever. At his peak, he dominated even his closest challengers by overwhelming scores. When he won the world championship in 1972, he set records for performance that may never be equalled. Fischer was one of the two charter members of the US Chess Hall of Fame, sharing that honor with 19th-century great Paul Morphy. The two have much in common. Both were American-born, and both dominated the chess world with no close rivals at their peaks. Sadly, however, both retired from serious competition when they were at their strongest, although Fischer came out of retirement briefly to play one match. Bobby Fischer was born on March 9, 1943, in Chicago. He was raised by his mother and older sister, both highly intelligent people. The family had settled in Brooklyn by the time Fischer was six years old. About that time, his sister bought little Bobby a chess set to keep him amused. He soon became totally absorbed with chess. By the age of 14, Bobby Fischer won the US Championship, becoming by far the youngest player ever to win that title. At 15, he became the youngest international grandmaster in history. Although that record has since been surpassed, it must be remembered that winning the grandmaster title in Fischer's day was a rarer achievement than it is today.

ROBERT JAMES (BOBBY) FISCHER by Bill Wall
Robert James (Bobby) Fischer was born on March 9, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois to Regina Wender Fischer Pustan (born in Switzerland of Jewish parents on March 31, 1913) and Hans-Gerhardt Fischer. His father was a German bio-physicist from Berlin and his mother was a riveter in a defense plant at the time. She later became a grade school teacher, a registered nurse, a physician (she first entered medical school in the Moscow in 1933 but did not complete her medical degree), and completed a Ph.D in hematology. She went on to doing pro bono medical work for the poor in Cental America and South America. In 1945 Hans-Gerhardt Fischer leaves the Fischer family and divorces Regina. Bobby Fischer never met his father. Regina had custody of Bobby and his older sister, Joan Fischer Targ (born in Moscow in 1938 and died on June 2, 1998 in Portala Valley, California of a cerebral hemorrhage). In 1948 they moved to Mobile, Arizona. In 1949 they moved to Brooklyn, New York where Regina worked as an elementary school teacher and nurse at Prospect Heights Hospital in Brooklyn. Regina moved to Brooklyn (500 Lincoln Place) to get her master's degree in nursing. In May 1949, Bobby 9 (age 6) and Joan (age 11) learned how to play chess from instructions found in a chess set that Joan bought at a candy store below their apartment. Bobby saw his first chess book a month later. For over a year Bobby played chess on his own.

Searching for Bobby Fischer is a top contender for the best movie of the summer. It is hard to imagine a more difficult topic for a movie than chess. It is not a popular game/sport, and as countless flicks have proven, sports movies are seldom a success. It seems that the battles of the field in a sports match are already cartoonish enough so as to tolerate another layer of dramatization in the big screen. And even among the few sport movies that excel there is a common complain: the sports footage is completely unrealistic, thus making the movie insurmountable for sport aficionados. Director Steven Zaillian took the challenge and passed with flying colours. Searching for Bobby Fischer is a movie that appeals to a large audience and to chess experts alike. Technical assistance by the noted chess player Bruce Pandolfini paid handsomely. The drama on the screen and on the board is real.

There's a theory going around that Bobby Fischer is playing chess online with other Grandmasters. This is all according to British Grandmaster Nigel Short, who is pretty sure he's playing Fischer, but not positive. What he does know for sure is that the guy beat him pretty soundly, and seemed to know a lot about subjects that Fischer would know about.
