The Road to the World Chess Championship: Karpov's Path to Glorious Victory
Here is how Anatoly Karpov won the World Chess Championship: In the following position, Anand, as black, is a pawn up. The game is clearly won for Black, as the passed pawn on a5 is unstoppable. There is no doubt that in a normal tournament game, played at a normal rate of speed, Anand or any other grandmaster or master would have beaten Karpov in this position. Indeed, Karpov might have resigned on the spot.
Yet, for some inexplicable reason, Kirsam Ilyumzhinov, who had only recently gotten out of prison, where he had spent several years for various petty crimes, only to become President of his Republic of Kalmykia only a few months after getting out of jail on the strength of being a strong supporter of Boris Yeltsin, and who had then bribed his way into becoming President of the World Chess Federation, had decreed that this game for the World Chess Championship be played at the rate of 25 minutes for each side for the entire game! In this position, Karpov, who was hopelessly lost, had less than two minutes left on his clock, whereas Anand had 15 minutes.

Final Round
Karpov, the gold collector, tops again
Former World Champion Anatoly Karpov was clear first in prestigious tournament held in the memory of late Najdorf. He secured his victory by defeating local star Ricardi in the last round, a precious positional masterpiece. Karpov used exchange variation of QGD and out played Ricardi with some delicate positional moves; Ricardi gave up in a totally hopeless position. Korchnoi was unable to beat off form Milos in a marathon game, and settled for a draw after some shaky positions. The game between Polgar and Radjabov was full of fights, where black tried hard to score full point to share the first but Polgar halted him to draw in a one pawn down rook ending. Felgaer-Xie Jun game lasted for 19 moves to share point. Mecking -Short game was also a GM draw in last round as both, fighting for top honors, signed score sheet in 20 moves.

    • Gata Kamsky, USA, 2735, 22 years old Kamsky has had an astonishing career. Since defecting from Russia at the age of 14, he has avoided Junior events, and competed directly with adults. He and Anand were the only two players to achieve the quarter finals or higher in BOTH the PCA and FIDE World Championship cycles last year. Kamsky defeated Anand in the FIDE event, and is now the challenger in the FIDE match. Kamsky lost to Anand during the PCA semi-finals in Spain last year. Kamsky has filed official grievances regarding his FIDE rating, which he feels has not accurately taken into account his PCA events, and should be higher. Still very young, still improving rapidly, and still developing an individual style, Kamsky, is one of the brightest stars in chess today.

Anatoly Karpov
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Anatoli Yevgenyevic Karpov (born May 23 ) is a Russian chess player. Karpov was born in Zlatoust Russia and started off his playing career by annexing the Junior World Championship (not won by a Russian since Boris Spassky ), everything sky-rocketed from there. After the Junior world championship, Karpov was a "mere" grandmaster , but in the following year there was a "quantum leap" in his playing strength. The first Candidates cycle (1974) he participated in was the one to find a challenger for the then World Champion, Bobby Fischer . Karpov beat Robert Byrne in the first Candidates match to face the ex-World Champion Boris Spassky in the next round. Karpov was on record to say that it would be Spassky that would win the Candidates cycle to face Fischer, but Karpov would win the following Candidates cycle (1977).

But rapid play is what takes home the money! The Amber tournament held annually in Monaco now sponsored by J.J. van Oosterom has been one of the most successful "variant" events, bringing together some of the world's top Grandmasters for a very unusual format. Each round consists of two games: one played blindfold at a rate of 10 seconds per move, and one played as rapid chess with only 25 min per game plus 10 secs increment per side. The prize money is fairly serious: a total prize fund of $137,250, with separate prizes for rapids, blindfold, and the combined score.

ROUND EIGHT: GAME ONE
Game 1 from Round 8, lightly annotated by IM Bjarke Kristensen, is available in PGN format (world97_USr8a.pgn) or as chessbase files as follows: Us_r8a.cbf Us_r8a.cbi The previous meetings between Anatoly Karpov and Viswanathan Anand have always been a tense affair. Karpov won a match back in 1991, but Anand has caught up since then, and lately his score against the defending FIDE Champion has been positive. This should make Anand a slim favorite under normal circumstances, but the FIDE finale in Lausanne is anything but normal. The big difference is that Anand has played 23 games in as many days before arriving in Switzerland while Karpov has been preparing, practicing and, most important, relaxing before the match. It was this difference that made Anand say to the Indian newspaper "The Hindu," that: "If anybody else other than Karpov wins this championship it is a World championship, otherwise it is not." Strong words from a man who usually prefersto take problems with a joke and a laugh. Anand's criticism wasn't directed at Anatoly Karpov (nobody can blame him for accepting the offer to be seated directly in the finale where even the loser will receive $768.000) but at FIDE's decision to do so.
