Interview with Garry Kasparov
At your 38 years old you are still the number one. What is your motivation, now that you have already won everything?
I have always loved playing chess, and for me playing chess is about “winning”, and I couldn’t imagine myself playing chess for fun, because winning is a part of the challenge. At one point, when you are used to fighting for your number one spot, you will not be able to imagine yourself giving it up without a fight. In many years I faced several crucial points when people said “Garry will no longer be the best player”, and it encourages me, it strengthens my determination to fight again.
And it’s very clear that my success in 2001 was dictated by the disaster in London. Also my very successful years in 1999 and 2000 resulted from growing criticism of me in 1997 when I didn’t play much chess and Anand was doing very well. So, as long as I have my energy in place, I will be fighting.
In your last match against Kramnik you were only able to defeat him in the blitz games. Whose turn is it now, yours or his?

"The future of chess lies in the hands
of this young man."

former World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik How could Mikhail Botvinnik have known? After all, when he made the above statement, Garry Kasparov was only 11 years old! But if there's a common theme that has characterized Kasparov's career to this point, it is his ability to live up to even the highest of expectations. The USSR Junior Champion at age 13, an International Grandmaster at 17, and the second strongest player in the world while still a teenager (19), Kasparov has consistently exhibited a genius for chess that belies his age. In November 1985, at age 22, he became the youngest World Champion in history by defeating Anatoly Karpov, a title he still holds today. Now, at age 34, Garry Kasparov is still going strong. Child prodigy
Garry Kasparov was born in Baku, the capital of the Russian republic Azerbaidzhan. His early success at the chessboard earned him an invitation to study under the tutelage of Botvinnik, the World Champion in 1948-1957, 1958-1960, and 1961-1963 and at the time considered to be the USSR's greatest player (Karpov was another of Botvinnik's pupils).

Garry Kasparov turns 40
At a time when chess players should be slipping, Garry Kasparov is still at the top of the chess world, where he has now been perched for over 18 years. Today is his 40th birthday, and instead of putting together a summary of his career we simply clicked a few times in ChessBase and allowed the database which he originally initiated to put together some biographical information.
Polgar in clear first after two rounds in Budapest
Judit Polgar didn't let getting the last number in the draw of the Hunguest Hotels tournament get her down. Undaunted by having black in the first two rounds, she went out and beat both Korchnoi and Acs. Her 2/2 score puts her in clear first. Only one other player (Nigel Short) has scored even a single win. Favorite Peter Leko has yet to make his move. Report and games here.

Chess has strong roots in Azerbaijan. Some claim it dates back to the sixth century, perhaps even earlier. References to chess have been made by poets of the region in twelfth century works. During the Soviet period (after a shaky beginning when chess was nearly banned because it was perceived as a game for the bourgeoisie), the USSR became known for producing the world's best players. The image of the chess player came to epitomize the ideal Soviet man-possessed with logic, will, and decisiveness: man as the perfect synthesis of thought and action.
Therefore, to focus on "Leisure and Play in Azerbaijan" without discussing the game of chess would be like trying to cover American sports without discussing football or baseball. And to highlight chess without featuring Garry Kasparov would be like setting up a chess board without a King.
We found Garry in Croatia. Though extremely occupied with preparing for the upcoming World Champion Games, he very willingly assisted us with this article.
