the IBM Chess Challenge Rematch
It takes more than calculating power to beat the best human chess players. It takes creative strategic plans. It takes a brain; an artificial brain. In 1996, an IBM development team thought they had such a brain in their Deep Blue supercomputer. They were wrong. Their electronic brain lost a 6-game challenge match with the World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov. The fact that a human could win decisively against Deep Blue demonstrated the fantastic power of real intelligence. However, the win was not entirely one sided. The computer managed to defeat Kasparov in one game after a human error or two. Analysts dismissed the win as nothing more than luck. The machine still had no brain. Only a year later in 1997, IBM fielded a new brain appropriately nicknamed Deeper Blue. Both its hardware and software were more advanced. The six games of the rematch were watched around the world via the computer internet. Kasparov crushed Deeper Blue in the first game. While many quickly predicted a repeat of the 1996 result, the IBM team adjusted the computer overnight before the second game. In this, the second game of the rematch, Garry Kasparov is crushed by the uncharacteristic strategic planning of the artificial brain. Deeper Blue repeatedly found the correct pawn moves to make inroads into all areas of the board. It avoided complications which may have allowed Kasparov counterplay. So tremendous was the depth of the computer's strategic judgement, that Garry Kasparov resigned in a drawn position. This chess playing machine has a brain.

Game 5: Garry takes draw in wild sacrificial game
Game 5 turned out to be the most exciting game of the Kasparov vs. Computer match but, like a dinner in a Chinese restaurant, it left the viewers unsatisfied.
The Final Position after move 19
The computer did something which no computer has ever done before in top level competition. It sacrificed a bishop on general principles, without having a concrete variation to back it up. The computer played the well known Bxh2+ type sacrifice. This sacrifice must be calculated exactly. The game can go either way. It is almost impossible for a human player to see every variation to the end, but humans often play it anyway because they know that it often works. The critical point came on move 16. Kasparov could have played 16. g3. The computer would have two possible moves. It could check with Nh2+. However, then the White king could just walk away with moves like 17. Kf2 Ng4+ 18. Ke1. Kasparov said after the game that he was afraid of Qh2 instead. However, then with care Kasparov could push up his pawns with moves like f5 and e4, blocking the development of his own pieces and creating space for his king to run. It seems that with best play Kasparov had a win. However, out of respect for the awesome calculating power of his opponent, and perhaps forgetting that the computer is limited in how far ahead it can see, Kasparov headed into a variation which guaranteed a quick draw.

Since a young age, he has shown a level of chess mastery that few have been able to match. At age 12, he was the USSR Junior Champion; a Grandmaster at 17, and at 19 years old, he was regarded as the second strongest player in the world. At 21, he played his first World Championship match against GM Anatoly Karpov , which ended when FIDE called off the match when neither player was able to achieve the required six victories after forty-eight games. This was the first of five world chess championship matches between Kasparov and Karpov . Kasparov won his second match with Karpov in 1985 to become the youngest world chess champion ever. Kasparov then successfully defended his world championship title three times against

By Chris Jones of the BBC's News Profiles Unit
He was perhaps the best the world had ever seen, a tiger of the chessboard who would seize an opportunity to go for the jugular and destroy his opponent's ego. But at 37, Garry Kasparov, the dominant male, has had to submit to the young pretender, the 25-year-old Russian, Vladimir Kramnik. And the experts and enthusiasts, whether watching at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, or following every move on the internet, have been baffled by the demise of the king of the chess jungle. Hullabooloo in Hammersmith
The man who became the youngest-ever world champion at 22 had sent away all previous challengers with their tails between their legs. Kasparov, once described by the former British Number One, Nigel Short, as a "thoroughly unpleasant person" is, by consensus, usually arrogant and aggressive, but had mobilised these traits, together with his enormous energy, to undermine his opponents. That is, until Kramnik came along. A tired-looking Kasparov surprised everyone by offering quick draws to Kramnik, a quiet, calm character without a hint of volatility.

Computer Defeats Kasparov,
Stunning the Chess Experts
By BRUCE WEBER esponding to defeat with the pride and tenacity of, well, a champion, the IBM computer Deep Blue drew even yesterday in its match against Garry Kasparov, the world's best human chess player, winning the second of their six games and stunning many chess experts with its strategy. Joel Benjamin, the grandmaster who works with the Deep Blue team, declared breathlessly: "This was not a computer-style game. This was real chess!" He was seconded by others. "Nice style!" said Susan Polgar, the women's world champion. "Really impressive. The computer played a champion's style, like Karpov," she continued, referring to Anatoly Karpov, a former world champion who is widely regarded as second in strength only to Kasparov. "Deep Blue made many moves that were based on understanding chess, on feeling the position. We all thought computers couldn't do that." As is his wont after a loss, Kasparov did not speak to reporters. But an ebullient Deep Blue team did.

Let's see, now. I'm White. I absolutely HAVE to win. I will:
Play a drawish line which Kramnik is expecting, has thoroughly prepared for, and plays like a rock
Exchange Queens as early as humanly possible
Come up with no improvements whatsoever and achieve less than nothing in the opening
Offer a draw after 14 moves so everyone knows I couldn't care less if I'm World Champion or not
Last White. Time to take off the gloves. I will:
Play e4 and go for the Scotch Opening
Play e4 followed by the Evans Gambit
Play d4 followed by a3 against the Queen's Indian Play the Catalan Congratulations. If you scored 100, you too are ready to defend the World Chess Championship! Here are links:

    Is Garry Kasparov a Swindler?
An Israeli bank blames the chess player of losing a source of income and of a 1.6 million dollars damage
As is known, chess is the art of sheer, pragmatic but still elegant calculation. That is why, any dealings with a chess player are dangerous to people’s reputation and purse. Especially with Chess World Champion since 1985, Garry Kasparov. Men of this kind can even surpass Santa Klaus with making Christmas presents. As it turned out, Garry Kasparov is an expert at making unpleasant surprises.
On the eve of 2003, the First International Bank of Israel is blaming Russian chess player Garry Kasparov of the refusal to pay off a loan at the rate of 1.6 million dollars, the Bloomber agency informs. The bank is deeply insulted with the insolence of the chess champion and has sent an appeal to the Delaware circuit court.
Russian lawyers would have estimated the actions of the chess champion as a fraud with a high degree of cynicism. The Israeli bank provided a loan at the rate of 1.6 million dollars to the chess champion in September 2000. Garry Kasparov guaranteed repayment of the loan with shares of his new company Kasparov Chess Online which he gave to the bank. However, as attorneys of the bank say, the debtor suddenly issued an instruction to close the website and abandoned the company. As is said in the bank’s appeal to the court, Garry Kasparov broke an agreement concluded with the bank when he closed the website, thus the company was deprived of its source of income.
