Britbase Chess Archive : Material from the 1930s - Part 1
Last Edited on Sunday, 17 January 1999 at 22:42 Most of the material assembled below was taken from volumes of English Counties' Chess Unions Combined Yearbooks, which were very kindly supplied by Maurice H Carter . If readers have an additional material or corrections/amendments to material already published, I would be delighted to feature them here. RHS Stevenson (pictured left) is now better known as the husband of famous Woman's World Champion Vera Menchik (1906-1944). His full name was Rufus Henry Streatfeild Stevenson (1878-1943) and he was a noted chess organiser in the UK. He was Kent County Champion in 1919. In 1931 he edited the Home News for the British Chess Magazine and dealt with subscriptions. In 1931 Stevenson and his first wife (herself a four-times British Ladies' Champion) lived in SW4 and played for the Lewisham St Mary's club, but the first Mrs Stevenson died in a tragic and bizarre accident in August 1935. She had been picked to play in the Women's World Championship in Warsaw and arrived in Posen (now known as Poznan) by plane from Berlin. Having completed the passport formalities, she was returning to the aircraft. Thinking it was just leaving, she ran for it, and unfortunately approached the front rather than the back, ran straight into the propellors which had just been started up and was killed. Stevenson married Vera Menchik in 1937, at which time he was the Kent County Hon.Sec, having previously been the match captain. He later became the BCF Hon.Sec.

FIDE Ratings World Indian Guest Book Feedback ... Associations News 2002 Rousing reception accorded to British Champion Ramesh Aug 13 Landing in home town is always a pleasure, more so when you win a big International event, make history with a cloud nine performance. But for the unassuming Madras chess master Ramesh, who conquered all that came his way at the Smith and Williamson British Championship at Torquay, England last week, it was the result of hard work and taking it game by game. "I just played my natural game and wasn't counting on the results in the second half" said a contented Ramesh, who gains a twelve game Grandmaster Norm, for his fortnight's work at England. Receiving the Champion at the Anna International Airport, Madras with pride and delight was his mother, who fed him with delicious sweets, completing the occasion. Present on the occasion were scores of chess enthusiasts waving the Indian flag, officials from Tamil Nadu Chess Association including, Mr K Murali Mohan, Mr Thirukalathi, Mr V Hariharan, Mr Ramaswamy and scribes and camera crew from Television networks. Other top chess players present on the occasion were International Master Tejas Bakre (enroute to his tournament in Abu Dhabi) and Ramesh's colleague and friend FIDE Master T S Ravi. Talking about his all conquering home-run victories over four Grandmasters, Ramesh said, "I took my chances and just played it as one game after the other. The win with Barua was pleasing and the final game victory over McShane in a tight contest, gave me the Championship." Adding this Norm to the one he got at Biel Open, Switzerland last year, Ramesh is just on the right track to complete the Grandmaster title requirements. "My immediate target is to become a Grandmaster" said the young Indian Oil Corporation Officer. On becoming a part of history, being the second Indian after Mir Sultan Khan, who won the event thrice 70 years back, to win the prestigious British Open, Ramesh said," I am very happy to emulate a great player and be a part of history."

38. Chess History
between the players of the modern form of chess and a player of the old Indianversion occured between 1929 and 1933 when mir sultan khan became British
http://www.chess-poster.com/english/history.htm
Early Chess The true origin of the game of Chess is not clear. Some Legends attribute its invention to the Biblical King Solomon, or to the Greek god Hermes, or to the Chinese mandarin Hansing. But most probably originated in India sometime around the 6th or 7th century AD. From there the game crossed into Persia (now Iran), then to Europe. The word Chess is thought to be derived from "shah," the Persian word for king, and the word checkmate from shah mat, meaning "the king is dead."
The earliest written mention of a Chesslike game appeared around 600 AD, and the fact that it was mentioned without an explanation suggests that it was already well known by that time. Chess is one of a group of games related from Chaturanga, a game believed to have originated in India in the 6th century or perhaps earlier, which itself may be related to a much older Chinese game. Chaturanga is a Sanskrit word referring to the four arms (or divisions) of an Indian army: elephants, cavalry, chariots, and infantry, from which come the four types of pieces in that game. It was not only two quoted texts that strengthened the belief for China as the birthplace of Chess, but also the circular bronze and ivory counters for the astrological Hsiang Hsi and for the war game Hsiang Chhi found during excavations. Similar finds are totally lacking in India. Indeed, India is a Chess Sahara Desert for archaeological finds, written documents, literature, early references, legends or anything akin.

A majority of players refused to play after a Chinese player resigned a drawn game and lost on time to other Chinese players. The player was watching other games and made no attempt to make time control against the front-runner, Xu Jun. FIDE then nullified the tournament. Later, President Campomanes reversed the decision, and ruled that the results would stand.
