QUICKVOTE Will world chess champion Vladimir Kramnik beat the Deep Fritz computer?
Yes No VIEW RESULTS It is a battle between human creativity and the monstrous calculating power of the machine. Vladimir Kramnik MANAMA, Bahrain World chess champion Vladimir Kramnik says he is ready to take on super-computer Deep Fritz, but accepts his "monstrous" challenger has the edge. The eight-game contest comes five years after IBM computer Deep Blue beat then-world champion Garry Kasparov the first time since the invention of a chess program in 1958 that a machine had beaten a human. IBM later cancelled the Deep Blue project and the program is no longer available for competition so Kramnik will meet the Deep Fritz CD-ROM application in the first match in Bahrain on Friday. The program can plot three million moves a second while Kramnik is capable of just one. The match, which is backed by Bahraini royalty, will be lucrative whatever the result. Kramnik will get U.S. $1 million if he wins, $800,000 if the match is drawn, and $600,000 if he loses.

Auf die Frage, ob es zu einem Wiedervereinigungswettkampf mit der FIDE kommt: "Ich warte erst, was Braingames ausarbeitet."

I kicked off asking about the Man-Machine match. Are you going to win?
"You only have to wait one month to find out. I will do my best. Its not my style to say I'm going to win. The match is going to be hard. I understand its going to be difficult but I can win."
Kramnik added that his team for the match will be Christopher Lutz, a German IM who will help him with technical matters and a physical trainer. I brought up the instability in the region and the outside possibility that the match might get caught up in US action as pressure is being stepped up against Iraq. He didn't think this would be a problem but added:
"I try not to worry about things that are beyond my control."
Kramnik been preparing for the Deep Fritz match.
"I spent the second half of August preparing..." he said. He added that how you have to think differently when you're playing against and computer than you do against human opponents and that it isn't that easy to switch from one to another. Kramnik only had a few days to prepare for the Russia vs. The World Match. "I only had a few days to get used to playing humans again and it is not easy."

Brains in Bahrain The Official Account of Vladimir Kramnik vs Deep Fritz Raymond Keene The attention of the chess-playing world, as well as the passionate interest of all those fascinated by advances in artificial intelligence, was drawn in the autumn of 2002 to the Gulf state of Bahrain where His Majesty the King of Bahrain Sheikh Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa had offered a million dollar prize for a match between the human world chess champion, Vladimir Kramnik from Moscow, and the world’s top chess playing program, Deep Fritz from Hamburg, Germany. Kramnik was bent on avenging the defeat in 1997 by Garry Kasparov against IBM’s Deep Blue super-computer. Deep Blue was invited to challenge Kramnik but IBM declined. A contest to decide the representative of silicon based intelligence ended in favour of Deep Fritz which ousted the Israeli program Deep Junior.
This book contains on-the-spot reports by Ray Keene, with comprehensive notes to all games from Bahrain. Also included are a history of Kasparov’s two previous matches against the IBM monster calculator Deep Blue, and details of Deep Fritz’s path to qualify for this challenge. Grandmaster Ray Keene together with former government minister and chess enthusiast His Excellency Yousuf al-Shirawi was the co-founder of the plan to bring this prestigious and long awaited match to Bahrain. The match was held under the patronage of the King of Bahrain and the Crown Prince His Highness Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa. According to grandmaster experts watching first hand, some games from this match propelled the art and science of chess to new levels of accuracy, daring, and depth of analysis.

He also held a press conference for all the Spanish and International Chess media, as well as local TV networks. The press conference, organized by EDAMI www.edami.com , also featured GM Miguel Illescas, Kramnik’s second and EDAMI Director. He presented the EDAMI 2001-2002 school chess campaign, backed by the Barcelona sports councilor, Mr. Albert Batlle. Also present were the presidents of the Spanish and Catalan Chess Federations, Mr. Javier Ochoa de Echagüen and Mr. Josep Flores, and the Director of the La Salle School, Mr. Cabedo. Here is a brief summary of the most interesting parts of the press conference as well as part of the interviews with several journalists which took place afterwards.

Back to Small Talk Just take a look and make your own judgement. This is a man with great confidence. He knows that he is 700 000, perhaps 800 000 but very likely 1 million dollars richer than ever before. Yes, these are the sums in today's commercials. But then, after the press conference after the 5th game Vladimir began to enter into a new life. He had admitted that his chess career was over. He could no longer keep in his memory the evaluation for a position he had seen just moments before! So, from one moment to the other he was condemned to rely on his feeling alone. He simply had lost his chess thinking. In a way he mutated into a player the 19th century had seen so often. Poor Vladdy! The former chess genius! Then strange events happened. The following report could only be told after a secret conference with CIA, Mossad and BND (Germany), Russia has no longer a secret service!
