Judit Polgar reigns without a crown
``I think that chess is the type of game which belongs entirely to men. In a contest like chess one is trying to assert oneself, to prove the supremacy of one's own ego. Women have a different psychology.'' - Garry Kasparov ``I could cede the odds of a knight to any woman player and still beat her easily.'' - Bobby Fischer JUDIT POLGAR was not born when Fischer said that. She was only nine when Kasparov more or less agreed with him thus. At 15 Judit became the youngest Grandmaster in the history of chess. Who was holding that record for the past 33 years? Fischer, considered by many as the greatest chess player ever. That was something not even Kasparov, the strongest player of all time, could do. She hasn't beaten the great Russian yet, but she did come close on a couple of occasions. She is one player who will be missed in the Delhi championship. What makes this good-looking Hungarian girl special is not just the fact that she is the greatest female chess player ever by a long distance, but that she has proved herself in the extremely competitive men's game at the highest level. Unfortunately Judit is not discussed when we talk about the world's greatest sportswomen, because she happens to play in a less glamorous sport.

GM Judit Polgar to visit Botswana!!
While it may be questioned that China's GM Xie Jun is the Queen to the throne of women's chess, GM Judit Polgar has proven to be the strongest woman's player of all time. Since her early teens, GM Polgar has consistently terrorized the male dominion of chess by placing in the world's strongest tournaments. With an 2679 FIDE rating, Judit is among the world's top 25 players and the youngest of the famous chess playing sisters ( GM Zsuzsu and IM Sophia ). The legend of Judit's teddy bear is famous, but now the little girl has grown up and has earned the respect of all in the international chess body.
From August 1-9, she will visit the southern African nation of Botswana to give a number of chess exhibitions and tour the country. Patrick Wanda , Botswana Chess Federation's Secretary General, has planned a knock-out tournament for the privilege to play the Hungarian Grandmaster. The 30-board simuls are only for Botswana players and the BCF plans to make first-rate arrangements and hopes to receive support from the private sector. Mr. Wanda states, "This opportunity is also to be used to raise funds for the development of chess in Botswana. . . particularly, the African team championships which take place later this year."

GM Polgar's visit to Botswana a smash hit!
After announcing that GM Judit Polgar would visit Botswana , it resulted in heightened excitement for future possibilities for African chess. Following is a press a release sent by Executive Director of the Botswana Chess Federation, Patrick Wanda
    Dear Colleagues,
We were unable to invite your players to partake in the Polgar Simultaneous due to contractual commitments. I am compelled however, to let you know as others may already know that GM Judit Polgar and her husband Dr. Gustav Font were our esteemed guests from the 2nd of August to the 9th of August 2001.
She conducted two simultaneous chess exhibitions on thirty boards for day one and day two.
    The results were as follows:
    Day one: Botswana 1.5 - Polgar 28.5
Day two: Botswana - Polgar 30
Qualification criteria for playing GM Polgar was as follows: The top three players from all our National Events of 2001 in all categories, thus IBM Individual National Championships Ladies and Men, Stanbic National Club Championships, Debswana National School Championships (Junior Boys, Girls and Senior Boys, Girls and Primary Boys and Girls) and the Roscoe Bonna Blitz Championships. The above was the composition for the first thirty on day one. Meanwhile an open section of 150 players was conducted in the background on day one to select the top thirty for a place to play GM Polgar on day two. The winner on day one was Ignatious Njobvu (2164) and the draw from Baone Kealeboga (unrated).

    http://www.hmg.co.uk/crowwood/29-10-98.htm
archive.htm 29-10-98 IT'S MOST definitely a man's world, according to a recent press release I received from the British Women's Chess Association. The "sisters" are incensed over a discriminatory policy of the embattled BCF Director of Junior Chess, Brian Jones, that vetoed any entry, on the grounds of "not being good enough to score 50%", to girls in the under 12 and 10 sections of the World Youth Chess Championships (players aged 10-18), Castellon, Spain, that started on Sunday. They argue, and rightly so, that the policy is short-sighted as the best girls tend to perform well in these competitions compared to their male contemporaries, and it could also be perceived as warning to them that "you are not wanted". It's worth noting that other nations send several girl players in those age groups to gain invaluable international experience, and perhaps in the vain hope of discovering the next Judit Polgar. Judit Polgar, now 22, hasn't been much in the news since Wijk aan Zee where she was second to Anand before dropping back to 50 per cent. Polgar then took time off to iron out weaknesses in her game and returned with vengeance at the US Open in Hawaii. Rest brought zest as she won with 9/11, the first time a woman has taken this venerable event; while this month's VAM tournament at Hoogeveen in the Netherlands turned out even better. Polgar destroyed her opponents in the first half of the double-rounder, winning impressively against Timman, Shaked and the great Spassky (whom she defeated in a match in 1993). Judit is now just outside the top ten GMs and has only been held back as a major world title contender by her poor results against Kasparov, Anand and Kramnik. Even at the tender age of ten many commentators tipped her as a future challenger to Kasparov, and it could still happen. Make your guesses! I will give you six guesses for Judit's next move. I or Garry (I am sure) would never find the move.
    [Alternatives: 6...f5; 6...g6; 6...Nf6; 6...Ne7; 6...Be6; or 6...Ba6.]
There is a rule in chess - "Any attack on the wing must be met with action in the center." But this may cost you a pawn! Be prepared.
There is a rule in the Russian School of Chess - "A Russian never goes back." Educated Russian chess players always follow this rule. Here white will let go of a pawn and it is better to have a Knight on the second rank than on the first.
One strange move requires another strange move.
My computer (Fritz6), after two minutes work, assessed that black is better by a quarter of a pawn (0.25).
The primary opening rule of chess - "Get out your pieces" and the next move is easy to predict.

    Welcome
This month the featured game is from a 1965 match in Yugoslavia between two of the most famous attacking grandmasters in history, Mikhail Tal and Bent Larsen. In this game, neither player wishes to play conservatively as Tal opens with 1.e4 and Larsen answers with the Taimanov variation of the Sicilian Defense. Larsen attempts to provoke Tal with the transposition 4...e6 and then later with 9...Qc7 instead of the preparatory 9...a6. Tal simply develops his pieces, preparing for a devastating attack. In the end, Larsen is crushed.
Joe's Chess Page also offers a large and useful selection of links to some of the most essential chess sites on the Internet. In addition, the Photo Gallery contains many pictures of some of the most interesting and influential players in history.
A recent addition to the Chess page is a library of some of the greatest games of all time. They are in .pgn format and can be downloaded at your convenience. PGN files can be opened in any text editor or may be opened in the ChessBase, ClubMate or KenChess database/pgn readers and graphically replayed Note: These files are zipped (compressed).

    Judit Polgar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Judit Polgar (born July 23 ) is a Hungarian chess player . Considered the best woman chess player in history, in the April 2003 FIDE rating list (including men and women) she was ranked number ten in the world. Judit and her two sisters ( Zsusza (GM) and Sophia (IM)) were reportedly part of a psychological experiment carried out by their father in an effort to determine if women could achieve high mental aptitude when trained from a very early age. The controversial experiment appears to be a success since these woman have achieved heights in chess few men ever achieve. Judit has refused to participate in women-only chess events. Few doubt that any other woman (besides possibly her sister Zsuzsa) could possibly earn a draw, much less a win, against her in any fair game. Amongst her achievements is achieving the men's Grandmaster title at the then record age of 16. Her climb up the ranks seemed to put her on target for world champion. But although she has played many winning games against some of the world's best players, she has not won any major tournament. She has also been unable to beat former champion

Seriously. It was the Ukrainian IM Sergei Karjakin, who later turned up at the Aeroflot tournament in Moscow in January and dutifully chalked up a GM norm there. Young Sergei then played at FIDE Grand Prix in Dubai, where he went out in the first round against Veselin Topalov, the world number 8 player. To be fair, his boss, FIDE world champion Ruslan Ponomariov also suffered a similar fate at the hand of FIDE world women's champion Zhu Chen. On 16.05.2002 John Henderson reported that the Sergei has gained his second GM norm. Playing in the category 8 (2427) Alushta-100 tournament in the Ukraine, he scored 9.5/13 to share first equal in the tournament with GM Evgenij Miroshnichenko.
