Google Games - World Chess Champions Who are the most popular World Champions? The Web shows the way! Related Resources World Champions Can the Web give us any clues about the relative popularity of the World Chess Champions? In November 2001, while working on an article about the World Champions, your humble Guide first tackled this question. If you're not familiar with the Champions, see the link in the right corner for their full names and the dates of their reigns. The following tables show page statistics gathered from searches on Google (www.google.com). The searches were on the word chess plus the name of the champion. Anyone familiar with Google (and who isn't these days?) knows that these counts are approximate, but consistent across searches. The column on the right shows page counts taken in November 2001, while two other columns show more recent counts for the same search. The columns headed '+/-' show the increase (or decrease) in the number of pages from one count to the next.

Linares International Chess Tournament 2001
The draw was held on February 22nd 2001. The players drew the following numbers: 1) Leko 2) Shirov 3) Grischuk 4) Polgar 5) Karpov and 6) Kasparov. Kasparov won in Grand Style.
Garry Kasparov dominated in Linares 2001, put a big exclamation mark by his performance. He beat Alexander Grischuk second time in a row to reach a marvelous score of five wins and five draws, three points ahead to others.
Shirov’s last-round win against Judit Polgar. Sicilian Najdorf with 6.Be2. She was looking good against him but she became over ambitious and lost. Peter Leko failed against cool minded Anatoly Karpov, leaving them at -1 with everyone else. Leko had a winning position most of the time.

Dateline Buenes Aires, Argentina
Alpheta Patton, Ace Girl Reporter She came, she saw, she conquered, and so shocked the sensibilities of a GM Victor Bologan that he filed a complaint with the FIDE Politically Incorrect Committee alleging sexual discrimination! Other South American males on hand to watch the Super Tournament, the crowing event in this year's Najdorf Chess Festival, were appalled by Ms. Judit's easy victory over her male opponents, as well as her very chic form-fitting leopard print top (picture left). Allegations of sexual hi-jinks surfaced in the local press when Judit first appeared the leopard print blouse when she played impressionable teenager MF Diego Flores in a key Round 6 game. Judit easily defeated the up-and-coming teen and a firestorm from South American Macho Male types followed in the pressroom and in the local press. This phenomenon, also known as Stupid Goat Man Syndrome, stems from long-entrenched cultural attitudes that a woman must never appear in public in a skin tight leopard print top. The Syndrome, which takes its name from "Macho", meaning "Stupid Goat Man" in Spanish vernacular, has been studied by sociologists from around the world for a number of years.

A: It's the first time I beat somebody so strong like Shirov in a tournament game. So, that's really very exceptional and makes me very happy. Q: How did you managed to become grandmaster at only 12 years old?
A: Just working hard. Nothing else special or, at least, I don't remember anything more important. Q: What's the most difficult part of chess for you?
A: Nothing, I don't now. So far, everything was very easy for me. Q: One year ago you were one of Ponomariov's team members. Why?
A: Before that I beated him in a couple of friendly rapid games in a chessclub, and I think he was impressed by that. So, he invited me to work with him. Q: How is a normal day in your life?
