Women’s Chess by Tim Hanke It ’s an observable fact that the very best chessplayers are male, and most chessplayers at all skill levels are male. Why this is, has been much debated. As we learn more about the human brain and the differences between men and women, certain scientific facts have become more or less established, including (1) Men (in general) are wired to be more aggressive than women; (2) Men (in general) are wired to have better spatial reasoning abilities; (3) Women (in general) are wired to be more cooperative and nurturing than men; and (4) Women (in general) are wired to have better verbal abilities than men. My own opinion is that men like chess more than women like chess, mainly because chess is a highly competitive, ego-driven, aggressive activity. In other words, not so different in principle from the games boys play with toy guns or swords, though more intellectually sophisticated. Women, therefore, are not as attracted to chess. This has nothing to do with women’s overall intelligence, but because they tend to have, perhaps, different interests and different thinking styles.

RECENT NEWS (Thanks to JanXena at Chess Goddesses for much of this info.!) :)
September 2001: Judit is currently playing in the Najdorf Memorial 2001 Tournament. For more info., you can visit the tournament's English page here. November 2000: Judit steamrollered her opponents at the 34th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, in which she played on the Hungarian Men's team. (Now if they'd only let her play in the World Championships!) Results and games here October 2000: Judit won the Najdorf 2000 tournament!! For info and games, go to JanXena's Najdorf page October 2000: FIDE pulls in the welcome mat! Judit apparently has been denied an invitation to the World Championships this year, though she may be invited as a "substitute" in case someone drops out. Is this any way to treat a Grandmaster August 2000: I have just started a mailing list for fans of Judit Polgar and other women chess players! Tired of all the macho trashing of Judit and her female collegues on other forums? This is the place to be! Click

FIDE World Chess Championship, New Delhi Xie Jun On Top Of The World Crowned Champion For The Fourth Time By S.Sujatha in New Delhi Dec 15
Xie Jun at New Delhi on Friday. Xie Jun defended her title in an all-Chinese World Women Chess Championship finals. Xie Jun drew with Qin Kanying in the fourth game to win the title for the fourth time. Qin who very much wanted to win this title said, “I will try next time.” Xie Jun defended her title for the second time after she won the world women chess championship first in 1991. This is her fourth victory at this championship and she seems to possess more energy to win more such championship. This simple Chinese lady is well educated and is doing her doctorate in psychology. She believes that education gives one confidence and confidence is very important to play chess. Xie Jun in between her successful world championships lost once to Zsuzsa Polgar at Jaen in Spain in 1996. She then got married to her second in Mr. Wu Shaobin also from China. He was her second for her first match against Maric in 1990, against Zsuzsa Polgar in 1996 and is now in Singapore teaching chess. The Chinese officials were very happy even before the final match was played. They never worried about who will win the title. All they wanted was Chinese to win. Zhu Chen after losing in this championship said, “Qin will reach the finals” and her compatriot had proved it.
