'Anand knows that he can win. I will try my best to win the title too'
S panish Grandmaster Alexei Shirov is confident of giving Vishwanathan Anand a run for his money in the final of the FIDE World chess championship, in Tehran. The Latvia-born player, who had beaten the Indian ace earlier this year at Linares, feels Anand will have to play better than he did in Delhi earlier this month to pick up the world title that has eluded him in 1995 and 1998, when he lost to Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov respectively in the finals. Shirov, who has an ELO rating of 2746, entered the final after beating Alexander Grischuk of Russia in one of the semi-finals of the championship, while Anand ELO rating 2774 defeated Michael Adams in the other. Though he may not have won any major event this year, Shirov's confidence stems from his tenacious showing in the first phase of the championship, where he won all his matches till the semis via the tie-breaker. Only in the semis did he manage a win in regular play, against Grischuk. While freely admitting that his Indian rival is the favourite in their upcoming title clash, Shirov refuses to play down his own chances. "This is his third final. In the last two finals, he was not able to capitalize on the opportunities that came his way. So I think my chances of beating him and winning the title are very good," Shirov argues.

News > PTI > Report Anand wins Corus chess title Vishwanathan Anand won the 65th Corus Grandmasters chess tournament in Wijk Ann Zee (the Netherlands) after settling for a quick draw against Evegeny Bareev in the 13th and final round on Sunday. The 31-year-old superstar annexed his third Corus title tallying 8.5 points from 13 rounds, pipping the likes of Braingames champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and world champion Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine. After his closest rival, world's strongest woman chess player, Judit Polgar played a quick draw with talented youngster Teimour Radjabov of Azerbeijan, Anand settled for a quick 14-move draw with Evegeny Bareev of Russia in the 13th and final round. Polgar, who held Anand to a draw in the penultimate round, finished second with eight points. The swift game, in which Anand played white, began with  the French defence and went into the Burn Variation. The Indian champion played it safe and soon offered the draw, which was accepted by the Russian after a brief thought. Radjabov finished with 6.5 points in the lower half of the standings.

I 'm the only person who has the right to challenge Kasparov"
Alexei Shirov gives his views on the proposed match between Kasparov and Kramnik
Interview by Hartmut Metz, May 2000, translation by Harald Fietz ( Figo more English chess articles by Hartmut Metz Alexei Shirov Alexei, in 1998 you beat Kramnik in Cazorla with a score of 5.5:3.5 in what was called the challengers' final, held after Anand refused to participate. Can you comment on the proposed world championship between Kasparov and Kramnik?
They have no right to call it a world championship. Of course, nobody can prevent them from playing a private match, as Kasparov did against Timman in Prague in 1998. Obviously you are not on good terms with the world's top 3. What's your view of Kasparov's behaviour?
How would you assess Anand's role?

He acted according to a rather cynical approach which from another angle may be called a practical principle: money talks. So far he has received 200,000 dollars without doing anything. I don't know what could possibly justify this sum. And what is Kramnik's part in the process?

Fire on Board, Shirov's Best Games
GM Alexei Shirov
Everyman Publishers, 1997, 232 pp. Randy's Rating: 10 This book is a class act from its title to its indexes. I believe that it is the best new book of 1997, and it deserves the highest rating. The book is a delightful blend of exciting chess and honest annotations with an interesting sprinkling of endgames and discussion of a favorite chess opening (the Botvinnik Variation of the Semi-Slav). It also contains a variety of useful indexes and introductions. My only wish is that the book wouldn't have ended. Alexei Shirov is an exciting young player who has, for a number of years, been among the top ten players in the world. His style is reminiscent of his Latvian countryman Tal, and he has done a lot of important theoretical work on some of the sharpest openings and systems, including the Botvinnik Variation of the Semi-Slav, the King's Indian, and the Sicilian. The 82 games chosen (plus another 16 in the chapter on the Botvinnik variation) are exciting struggles that depict chess as a fight. I like the fact that Shirov is willing to point out the various ups and downs objectively. Nothing puts me off more than annotations that purport to show how the player "saw everything" from start to finish.
