"Character is What You Are in the Dark..."
But rapid play is what takes home the money! The Amber tournament held annually in Monaco now sponsored by J.J. van Oosterom has been one of the most successful "variant" events, bringing together some of the world's top Grandmasters for a very unusual format. Each round consists of two games: one played blindfold at a rate of 10 seconds per move, and one played as rapid chess with only 25 min per game plus 10 secs increment per side. The prize money is fairly serious: a total prize fund of $137,250, with separate prizes for rapids, blindfold, and the combined score.

Chess Life Online: Analysis by GM Larry Christiansen
Analysis by GM Larry Christiansen
GM Larry Christiansen , former US Champion, provides analysis and coverage of top news stories for Chess Life Online GM Alexei Shirov routed GM Judith Polgar in the 2nd Eurotel Cup Challenge match held July 11-18 Czech Republic's capital city of Prague. Shirov won the first three games in good style and then clinched his $65,000.00 winner's purse with a draw in the fourth game. Shirov, known as a fierce attacking player, then further padded his score with a delicate endgame squeeze in the fifth game. Judith Polgar had been, before this match, one of Shirov's most difficult opponents, boasting a personal score of 11 1/2 - 6 1/2 against the Spanish denizen (formerly of Latvia). Here is, what official match commentator Yasser Seirawan considered the best game of the match. White: GM Alexei Shirov (ESP, 2720)
Black: GM Judith Polgar (HUN, 2665)
Prague, 1999 (game 3)
Sicilian Defense Not surprisingly, Gary Kasparov is mainly responsible for the current popularity of this knight sally as he used it with dynamic effect in the mid-nineties against Anand, Topalov and other stars.

Let us take this "gens una business" business chessically. Do you think that the present Kasparov-Ilyumzhinov-Seirawan axis (I am using the word to please some innocent politicians) is really a democratic family? Judging by the attitude of chess players and many chess fans very few support this alliance.

(Monthly article) Appeal From Lev Khariton To the participants of the chess tournament in Linares, all chess players and chess journalists, all chess fans...
Now it is time ( who knows, maybe, history will never give us another chance) to congratulate Robert Fischer on his birthday! I am sure that all chess players and all those who love chess will join me. It is also the right time now to appeal to the American government to cancel the executive order vis-à-vis Fischer, in other words to correct the gross mistake committed years ago. I have no doubts that many people will support this stand. This is our moral duty: we can no longer remain indifferent facing the injustice. This is our responsibility before Time and History.

The draw was held on February 22nd 2001. The players drew the following numbers: 1) Leko 2) Shirov 3) Grischuk 4) Polgar 5) Karpov and 6) Kasparov. Kasparov won in Grand Style.
Garry Kasparov dominated in Linares 2001, put a big exclamation mark by his performance. He beat Alexander Grischuk second time in a row to reach a marvelous score of five wins and five draws, three points ahead to others.
Shirov’s last-round win against Judit Polgar. Sicilian Najdorf with 6.Be2. She was looking good against him but she became over ambitious and lost. Peter Leko failed against cool minded Anatoly Karpov, leaving them at -1 with everyone else. Leko had a winning position most of the time.
