So who are the Islanders to complain about all of their nicks and bruises? While the Isles' lineup doesn't ordinarily boast players with marquee names like Mario Lemieux (groin) or the dynamism of Alexei Kovalev, it still has operated nearly all season at less than full strength. The latest rash of injuries - to workhorse defenseman Adrian Aucoin, goalie Chris Osgood, bruiser Eric Cairns and forward Brad Isbister - has left the Isles shorthanded at a time when Peter Laviolette knows his team can't afford to use its overcrowded trainer's room as a crutch. "I'm sure a lot of teams are going through it right now. You're in the grind months, you're in January and February, which are tough-sledding months," Laviolette said after practice yesterday in Syosset. "Maybe other teams can afford that, but we can't. Because we had our tough sledding in October." The Isles opened the season going 5-10-1 with captain Michael Peca missing the first 16 games following offseason knee and shoulder surgeries. All-Star defenseman Roman Hamrlik and two-way forward Shawn Bates also have missed significant time to injury this season.

While workhorse Adrian Aucoin dressed for the first time in more than three weeks in the 2-1 loss to the Flyers at Nassau Coliseum, defense partner Kenny Jonsson replaced him in the trainer's room. The team's medical staff insisted Jonsson had not suffered the latest in a series of concussions (at least five) over his career, instead labeling his game-ending injury "a post-traumatic migraine." "I don't think Kenny's serious," Peter Laviolette said. "But it made us tax Aucoin more than we wanted to." The Isles (24-21-5-2) claimed Jonsson was withheld from the remainder of the game as a precaution following a first-period collision with Flyers star Jeremy Roenick along the sideboards. Of course, any head injury to Jonsson is cause for concern for the Isles, who have clawed back into seventh position (55 points) in the Eastern Conference. Laviolette's return to a six-man defensive rotation - with Aucoin logging a whopping 32:40 after missing eight games with a strained groin - lasted less than one minute.
