Colorado Avalanche Press Release
Avalanche Acquire D Raymond Bourque and LW Dave Andrechuk The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced this evening that the team has acquired defense man Raymond Bourque and left wing Dave Andreychuk from the Boston Bruins. "We are thrilled and greatly excited to announce these acquisitions to our fans tonight," said Colorado Avalanche President and General Manager Pierre Lacroix. "Ray Bourque and Dave Andreychuk bring us an outstanding background and extended depth to our present lineup." In return for their services, Boston acquires forward Brian Rolston, prospects Martin Grenier and Samual Pahlsson, and Colorado's first round choice in either the 2000 or 2001 Entry Draft. The Boston Bruins will have the option as to which year they will select the draft choice. "This great depth of ours allows us the capability to go ahead and make such a move for the present," added Lacroix. "It certainly would not have been possible without the great work of our scouting staff over the last few years." Originally Boston's first choice (eighth overall) in the 1979 Entry Draft, Raymond Bourque leads all active defense men in goals (395) and is second in assists (1,111) and points (1,506). He presently ranks ninth overall on the National Hockey League's all-time point list. One of only three players (Gretzky and Coffey) in the history of the NHL to record 1,100 assists, Bourque is one of only five players in the history of the NHL to play in 1,500 games and play in four decades. In addition, he has been selected to 18 consecutive All Star Games.

    THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, RAYMOND
June 26th "Good bye" has a finality to it, but "so long" seems more appropriate today, as Raymond Bourque has announced his retirement from hockey as an active player. His famous number 77 will be retired in Colorado, and it is a virtual certainty that the same respect will be accorded in Boston, his original NHL home. In a classy, controlled, and, yes, emotional news conference in Denver, the soon-to-be Hall of Fame defenseman made the announcement, and gave us yet another reason to take a moment and focus on the incredible achievements of his 22-year NHL career. Let's start with that: Bourque came into the NHL as an 18 year old, and not only excelled, he did it for 22 years. Twenty-one of those years were spent with the Boston Bruins, where the torch was passed from the failing hands of Brad Park, another former NHL great who had been handed the same torch from one Robert Gordon Orr. Not only did Ray Bourque play in many All-Star games, but he was a "real" All-Star, as I refer to it. He was either a First or Second All Star Team selection in 19 of his 22 seasons, including his final one.

    BOURQUE, AVALANCHE ACCOMPLISH THEIR MISSION
The Colorado Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup, and for hockey, I couldn't be happier. You probably already understand why, especially if you have been reading this space, but I'll review those reasons for you shortly, anyway. First, however, I must mention the team that skated off the ice without the most spectacular trophy in all of sports. The New Jersey Devils deserve congratulations for a magnificent defense of their Stanley Cup championship that fell one day short of "Mission Accomplished." They are a great team that will undoubtedly be back soon to vie for the championship again. Second, it was also good to put aside the usual conference rivalries and see a Western Conference team win the championship. Whether it's right or wrong, we often feel forgotten about on the left side of our country, and so it was excellent to see the media attention and respect granted to a Western Conference club. In addition, it was somehow fitting to see the first place club, under dire circumstances, prove why it was the best club in the National Hockey League this season. Colorado truly had to earn their championship from a great team, and only overtime might have been better than what happened on the ice.

March April ... March "The Hockey Collector" – April 12, 2001 by Keith Lenn Defense: Valued Greatly On The Ice, Undervalued In The Card Market Hockey card collectors love players who score tons of goals, rack up astonishing assist totals, and win major amounts of hardware. It’s no wonder that players like Mario Lemieux, Paul Kariya, and Jaromir Jagr are at the tops of collectors’ lists. However, collectors often forget about the defenders. You know, the guys who get paid to stop the other team from scoring goals. The guys who don’t think twice about getting in the way of a ninety mile per hour slapshot. The guys who make sure the crease is clear for the goaltender.

March April ... May June 28, 2001 BRAGGING RIGHTS One of the best things about writing "The Hockey Collector" is that it gives me a chance to show off some of my favorite acquisitions of hockey memorabilia. Sure, I could make your mouth water by writing about some of the more valuable items in my collection, but to be honest, some of my favorite pieces are not all that valuable. In fact, I’d like to share three pieces from my collection with you this week with a total value not to exceed $60. First on the list is an autographed Jim Craig Signature Rookies USA Olympic card. Any American hockey fan who witnessed the 1980 Miracle On Ice in Lake Placid, New York can tell you that the USA men’s hockey team were, and still are, national heroes. Craig, Mike Eruzione, and the rest of the squad gave our country an unexpected battle victory during the tensions of the Cold War. It was Jim Craig that backstopped the Americans to the improbable Olympic Gold. But it was more than just a sports victory. It was a win for democracy. I purchased this card at auction for under $20 US, but I would have paid much more for this piece of hockey history!

This means that a rookie that makes his NHL debut on April 1, 2003 will not appear in a 2002-03 hockey-card set. Instead, he will only be eligible for inclusion in a 2003-04 series.

Ownership ... Attendance by Team The 25 players with the highest accumulated salaries in 12 years (between 1989-1990 and 2000-2001) Mark Messier is the NHL player who has accumulated the biggest fortune, with his hockey salary, over the last 12 seasons. He has been in first place of the "NHL Fortune" list for the past 2 years. Before that, Wayne Gretzky was the leader, followed by Messier. Other notes: The player who took the biggest leap forward this year is Peter Forsberg who moved 10 positions from 22nd to 12th with a bit over $34M. Mario Lemieux, despite retiring after the 96-97 season, is still among the Top 25. He's losing ground, though, having dropped 10 positions. He might have to start selling his vast collection of bottles of wine to bring food on the table soon.
