LOUIS (AP) One of the most popular athletes in St. Louis has apparently played his last game with the Blues. The Blues have released enforcer Kelly Chase to free up money to sign potential free agents their own and possibly others. General manager Larry Pleau informed Chase on Wednesday that the team would not pick up the option on the final year of Chase's $500,000 contract. "Kelly's been great for us since I've been here, but we have to make tough decisions," Pleau said Thursday. Chase, who turns 33 on Oct. 25, has spent eight of his 11 NHL seasons with the Blues the first five and the last three. He signed as an unknown free agent out of Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan, in 1988 and became one of the team's most popular players, whether stirring up trouble on the ice or diving into charitable work off it. His work in forming the Gateway Locomotives hockey team for the developmentally disabled helped him win the NHL's King Clancy Award two years ago.

LOUIS, July 28, 2000 - The St. Louis Blues today introduced Chris Kerber and longtime Blues fan favorite Kelly Chase as their radio broadcast team on KTRS, the Blues' new flagship radio station. Kerber, 29, a native of St. Louis, will handle the play-by-play duties formerly held by Dan Kelly, who left the Blues this summer to accept the television play-by-play position with the expansion Columbus Blue Jackets. Kerber recently completed his fourth season calling the action for the Springfield (Mass.) Falcons of the American Hockey League. Chase, 32, officially retired from the NHL this week to accept the position of radio color analyst, replacing Bernie Federko, who will move to the neighboring booth to handle color commentary aside play-by-play announcer Ken Wilson on Fox Sports Net and KPLR WB11. GIFTS FOR GUNS December 5, 1998 In an effort to take guns off of the streets and lower the chances of criminal or accidental shootings, San Jose Sharks forward Ron Sutter, in cooperation with the Sharks and the Santa Clara County Police Chiefs Association, invited all citizens to bring an unloaded weapon to the San Jose Arena. Participants exchanged guns for gift packages donated by the Sharks, Ticketmaster, Target stores, Bass Tickets, and Imperial Toys. "I am proud to be a part of this program. If we can get one gun off the streets or out of someone's home that might injure or kill someone, then we've done something positive for the community." Fourteen Fund Doug Wickenheiser In continued support of Doug Wickenheiser, the St. Louis Blues are taking an active role in rallying behind "Wick" and his fight against cancer. Each Blues player has a decal on his helmet bearing Wickenheiser's No. 14, along with a candle "Wick" of hope. These stickers and Wick 14 pins are available for purchase and all proceeds go to cancer research in tribute to Doug's continued spirit in his battle against cancer. The Fourteen Fund is the Blues new charitable trust fund, named in honor of Wick's spirit.
