This week, take a look at a heated battle between two sure-to-be-NHL-bound-soon teams.

It's a spirited bunch of young bucks, reminiscent of the Quebec Nordiques of days past: not the greatest team ever assembled, but… well… they try. Our opponents on this fine day? Our arch nemesis, "Team Mary-Kate." Imagine putting Shane Churla, Tony Twist, Dave Semenko, Tie Domi, and Bob Probert all on one team, and you've got Team Mary-Kate. Bruisers and nothing but. Could we possibly overcome this seemingly insurmountable foe? We came out hard right from the beginning, and Mary-Kate could barely contain their frustration. A few choice words were thrown in my direction as I gave them a hard time about their poor play. We jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, and held it for quite some time. After some stellar saves by Tony "The Wall" de Waal, Mary-Kate brought the game to within 1 goal at 3-2. The team exchanged goals pretty steadily for the next half-hour or so, and with very little time remaining, the score rested at 7-6 in favor of Team Ashley. A few late pushes by Mary-Kate threatened our lead, but with 1 second left on the clock, the marvelous Sean Smailes managed to sneak one past The Wall to seal the victory.

Pavel Bure celebrates with Greg Adams and Dave Babych after eliminating Calgary in overtime. Listen - Geoff Courtnall scoring the overtime winner in Game Five. In Game Six the Flames twice took the lead, and Canucks twice tied it back up. D Gerald Diduck's goal, a slapshot from the point at 19:56 of the second period, was the last of regulation time. The teams played through three-quarters of an overtime period without any terrific scoring chances when a poor change at the Calgary bench resulted in a too many men on the ice penalty. The Canucks wasted little time capitalizing. After Pat Quinn called a time-out, Linden won the draw and Bure blasted a shot toward the net that was tipped by Jyrki Lumme. Vernon saved it, but Linden picked up the rebound and backhanded it through a sprawled Vernon and into the net to even the series at three each. Listen - Trevor Linden scoring the overtime winner in Game Six.

Playoff Hockey
Setting: The National Hockey League, circa the printing of the game.
Game Play: Both interesting and true to the sport. Each player chooses six cards to represent his team. You need a Center, two Defensemen, a Right Wig, A Left Wing, and a Goalie. You then lay those out on the table in the starting positions for a hockey game (very nice illustrations in the rulebook, by the way). The goal is to get possession of the hockey puck, skate your team forward and shoot for a goal. Play ends when one person runs out of cards. At that time, whoever has the most points wins.
This game does use custom dice to resolve actions, but even though I personally hate games which require additional materials, I didn't mind this as much because the dice were clever. These were six-sided dice with two blank sides, a puck, a whistle and an NHL logo. Whenever you are trying to shoot, you roll dice equal to your card's SHOOT stat. Count the number of pucks and NHL logos. If the logo matches the shooter's team, it counts double. The Goalie rolls dice equal to their BLOCK stat. If you beat the goalie, you score a point. Pretty simple and very quick.
Other than that, all you really need to figure out is what to do with the cards. Each player has a hand of three cards. They must draw one and play one per turn. The cards will allow you to SKATE a player forward so they can take a shot (or if they don't have the puck, they add +1 die to the player who has it), SHOOT, PASS or STEAL. Of course there are actually a lot of variations. One card might say: "OFFENSE: SKATE wingman, PASS puck to CENTER, SHOT at +1". If you don't have a useful card in your hand, you may discard any card to SKATE or SHOOT (but only if you have the puck). One last thing: they don't include a puck counter, so they recommend you use a nickel.

Complete History 30 Greatest 1982 Playoffs ... 1994 Playoffs Dallas
Second Round - vs. Dallas Stars

[Unknown] VS. CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALS Vancouver Canucks assistant coach Ron Smith, who also happened to be an assistant with the Canucks during its 1982 Run , noted after the series with Calgary, "Even when we were down, I felt something was going to happen. It's almost metaphysical, something cosmic. It reminded me of '82 when we had a patched up defense and everything still fell into place. You have to work hard, but at some point something else takes over." Only two days after defeating Calgary in the seventh game, the Canucks were in Dallas to meet the Stars. Seeing as Dallas finished with 97 points, the Stars had home ice advantage and the Canucks were forced to go to Texas for Games One and Two. Whereas the Calgary-Vancouver series stretched a full seven games, the Stars had swept the St. Louis Blues in four straight. During the playoffs, the NHL introduced a new home-road format, featuring 2-3-2 in order to reduce the jet lag on the players. The home team opens with Game One and Two, and the road team would play Games Three through Five on their home ice. The series would then return to the opening city for the final two games. Whereas the Vancouver Canucks played a run and gun, open style based on offense, the Dallas Stars were well known for their conservative and defensive game style. Many of the critics expected this series to be a clinic on low scoring, and many would be surprised.
