for the curious...
  • Yes! The Edmonton Oilers are looking like they are going to stay in Alberta. A non-refundable $5 million deposit was placed with the Alberta Treasury Branch for the purpose of purchasing the team. Peter Pocklington, in debt to the tune of nine figures (that’s in American loonies, btw), had put the team up for sale. Houston native Les Alexander has twice tried to purchase the team with the explicit purpose of moving it to Texas, but now is on the verge of getting rebuffed a second time. The Edmonton Oilers Forever committee has secured donations from everyone from the local newspapers to the local car salesman to the kiddies in the schools. They will still need a massive loan (the collection is mostly to get collateral to secure the loan) to buy the team, but things are looking good, which couldn’t be better.
  • It’s A Start. Team USA captain Chris Chelios did the honorable thing Friday and sent an apology and a $3000 check to the Nagano Olympics organizers. "I want to take this opportunity to apologize to the people of Japan, the Japanese Olympic Committee, the USOC and to all hockey fans throughout the world," he wrote. "Bitter frustration at our own level of play caused a few team members to vent their anger in a way which is not in the tradition of NHL/Olympic sportsmanship." I don’t mean to demean a decent thing to do, but Chelios seems to be taking the Chicago party line by implying that this was an act of frustration, not of drunken stupid people. Spraying teammates with fire extinguishers isn’t venting anger Richter didn’t play

2001-2002 Bulldog Hockey Feature: Rob Collins
In life, expectations are established. Some are self-imposed while others are inherited from a noteworthy family relative. Such as with Ferris State University's Rob Collins. The senior forward and assistant captain has been best known since his childhood as the nephew of a Hockey Hall of Famer and a former National Hockey League (NHL) four-time All-Star Game participant. Bob Gainey, current vice president of hockey operations and general manager of the National Hockey League's Dallas Stars, is that uncle who's name is widely-recognized throughout the hockey world due to his success on the ice as a member of five Stanley Cup-winning teams with the Montreal Canadians. His success then carried over to the bench as a head coach for six seasons, the first three with the Minnesota North Stars and then Dallas. Gainey guided Minnesota to a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1990-91 and was instrumental in building Dallas into a Stanley Cup Champion in 1999. Two of his father's brothers were also drafted by professional teams. Although Rob and his uncle don't see much of one another because of the distance and time constraints, there still remains a family bond between the two. While hockey remains a common thread, the loss of Rob's aunt and Gainey's wife, Cathy, five years ago due to cancer has brought the pair closer. Still, their respective schedules haven't allowed them to spend a great deal of time with one another.

Why I Love the New York Rangers Puck Guy Becky I remember the day I became a Ranger fan. It was February 24, 1996. That was the day Shane Churla first pulled on the blue shirt of Broadway and took the ice as a Ranger. See, in 1996 Churla was my favorite hockey player in the history of the game. In the year 2000, he still is. So where Churla went, I went, and when he went to Broadway so did it. The one thing I do appreciate about Neil Smith is that he took Churla to New York and made him a Ranger. Smith said on several occasions that Churla was the linchpin to the deal. A deal that also included Marty McSorley and Jari Kurri being dealt to the Rangers. So on that February day in 1996 I became a NYR fan for life, and for the time being, a Neil Smith fan. I've thought about this long and hard, and I've some up with a few reasons why I love the New York Rangers: 10) If you don't love the Rangers then you either live on Long Island, or in Jersey, I live on neither. 9) I live in Texas. Brian Leetch is the only Texas born hockey player in the NHL. I have to go with the homeboy. 8) They fired Neil Smith, the worst General Manager ever in hockey.

Mike Heika Tugnutt's ability to recover makes him valuable to Dallas In successive games, Stars fans saw why Ron Tugnutt was let go by Columbus and why he was so coveted by the team. Armstrong and the Stars showed no signs of panic, saying they had the same faith in Tugnutt as when they acquired him last summer. The Stars decided Tugnutt was the right man at the right time. They wanted a veteran with the right temperament to push and nurture Turco and be ready if needed. Tugnutt has done his job just fine. He and Turco are buddies, and Turco credits Tugnutt for some of his development this season. Tugnutt has been inconsistent but has bounced back from each of his defeats, including some very poor efforts. Tugnutt is 4-0 after losses with a 1.02 goals-against average after being San Jose 3-1 on Sunday, a game where he made the difference in the first period.

NHL Turnabout is fair play In NHL, despised opponents respected after becoming teammates By CHUCK CARLTON / The Dallas Morning News No matter the crime, regardless of the damage inflicted, a clean slate in hockey seems as easy as slipping on a new jersey. The cases are numerous of a previously hated player being welcomed by new teammates. The latest example: Claude Lemieux, acquired by the Stars on Jan. 16 from Phoenix. Stars Subscribe to our free Stars/NHL newsletter Stars-Coyotes preview Stars Forum ... More Stars If the Stars hold any lingering grudges against Lemieux, it is mitigated by the knowledge that he adds qualities the Stars need and the knack for scoring timely playoff goals. Everything else is secondary. "Not many more guys play harder than he does and show up the way he has," right wing Bill Guerin said. "The respect is more important than being liked." That thinking explains why the Stars immediately embraced Lemieux, an abrasive pain-in-the-rear for anybody who's worn an opposing uniform.

Pavel gossip line
Summarized from PBFC May 1994 newsletter
  • It just doesn't get any sweeter than this, hockey fans. Picture this: your team has fought back from a 3-games-to-1 deficir and it's the second overtime period of the seventh game of the Stanley Cup play-off series against the hated Calgary Flames. You're in all alone on red-hot goaltender Mike Vernon, you deke right, pull the puck to your left and slide it around the sprawling netminder for the 4-3 win. Yeeeoww!
  • Let's briefly recap the Pavel season: the Rocket missed six weeks of eight November games with a slight tear in the abductor muscle (groin injury), battled the flu in late November and early December, went through 18 game stretch in spring with only four goals and then unloaded big time with 49 goals in his final 51 games.
  • After only three seasons in the NHL, Pavel now has 154 goals and 123 assists for a total of 277 points in only 224 games. Of the more than 275 players on the Canuck all-time point scoring list, Pavel is now listed 13th (he started the season in 27th place).
