Captain Sundin takes the bad with the good.
What was wrong with Mats Sundin?
That question dominated hockey talk throughout Toronto last spring
as the Maple Leafs struggled against the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL
Eastern Conference final. As the captain of the blue and white, wasn't it his job to carry the
team in the tradition of Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark, the two men who had worn the C on their Leafs jerseys before him? How could he let the chippy Sabres shove him all over the ice surface, the critics demanded to know. "People have high expectations," Sundin said the other day. "But when the team is losing, especially in the playoffs, no one in our room is frustrated more than me. "I am the captain. Myself, I am one of the highest-paid guys on the team. I know the responsibilities that rest on my shoulders." Maybe. But as Sundin prepares to march his Leafs into post-season battle again, escaping the omnipresent shadows cast by the memories

By Patrick Mikus National Sports Editor There are numerous reasons to be excited about the 1995 NHL hockey season. Hockey fans will once again be amazed by Pavel Bure's speed, Adam Oates' passing and Patrick Roy's general greatness. There will be one last season of hockey played in the hallowed Boston Garden before the Bruins move into the new Garden next year. It's also safe to say that most hockey fans wanted to take that microphone right out of Al Morganti's hand and smash him over the head with it after his twenty-fifth update on the strike. Thus, the abbreviated season might have saved good Al's life. Anyway, here's a quick look at the eight teams from the East who should advance to the playoffs in order of finish. The New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup last year for the first time since the Cretaceous Age. Some interesting moves occurred in the Big Apple since the Rangers hoisted the Cup. Former coach Mike Keenan bolted for St. Louis and Esa Tikkanen soon followed Iron Mike to the Blues. Nevertheless, Mark Messier and company should have enough talent to climb their way back to the top. Signing Petr Nedved simply gave the Rangers another offensive weapon. As if they needed him. Adam Graves cannot be stopped. Center Mario Lemieux has decided to take a brief one year sabbatical before returning to the rigors of full contact hockey. The

Top 9 Hockey Songs Guide Picks Hockey is a rock and roll kind of game. From Stompin' Tom Connors to the Tragically Hip to Warren Zevon, here are the best hockey songs, capturing the spirit of a spin on the ice, a night at the rink or a game and a beer. Fifty Mission Cap - The Tragically Hip
"Bill Barilko disappeared that summer/He was on a fishing trip/The last goal he ever scored won the Leafs the Cup." Great song by a first-rate rock and roll band. From their album "Fully, Completely."
Hockey - Jane Siberry

"The sun is fading on the frozen river/The wind is dying down/Someone else just got called for dinner... Sunday afternoon." Siberry's wistful portrait of kid's hockey, which appears on her "Bound By The Beauty" album, is a minor masterpiece. There's also a terrific version on her live album, "Child: Music For The Christmas Season."
The Hockey Song - Stompin' Tom Connors
"Oh, the good old hockey game/Is the best game you can name/ And the best game you can name/Is the good old hockey game." Any questions? Stompin' Tom's minimalist tribute is a toe-tapping classic.

Free agent left wing Wendel Clark signs with Lightning
TAMPA Fla. (Jul 16, 1998 - 20:39 EDT) After losing out in the Doug Gilmour and Ron Francis free-agent sweepstakes, the Tampa Bay Lightning turned to former Toronto left wing Wendel Clark to address their offensive woes. The Lightning signed the unrestricted free agent Thursday to a one-year, $1.5 million contract with a team option for a second season. The deal also includes a games-played incentive bonus for the oft-injured forward. "Wendel is to us as good a signing as Doug Gilmour," general manager Phil Esposito said. "Wendel is a guy with leadership and the ability to motivate other players by the way he plays." Clark, 31, was taken first overall in the 1985 entry draft by the Maple Leafs. The 13-year veteran has 294 career goals, but has appeared in 50 or less games in six of his NHL seasons. He said he was excited about moving to Tampa Bay, even though the Lightning had the NHL's worst record last season. "It's intriguing that it's in a rebuilding situation, and I can go down there and prove I can still play and also help out a hockey club that's building for the future," Clark said. "They have the building blocks to progress quickly up the ladder."
