Tigers Knock Off Top-Seeded Old Dominion, 2-1 Next stop, Final Four Nov. 11, 2001 Final Stats Princeton, N.J. - Sophomore Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal with 5:07 remaining to lead the Princeton field hockey team to a 2-1 win over defending national champion and top-seed, Old Dominion in the second round of the 2001 NCAA Championships. The win sends the Orange and Black to the Final Four, where it will meet Michigan, a 2-1 winner over Michigan State, at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16. Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) gave Princeton an early 1-0 lead at 26:23. Friebe provided the initial insert on a penalty corner and passed the ball to freshman Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.). Martirosian passed back down to Friebe who then fired a shot just inside the left side of the cage and passed the pad of Lady Monarch goalie Marybeth Freeman (Holland, Pa.).

Scrimmage ends in shootout

Two 21-minute periods and a five-chance shootout were not enough to decide the Notre Dame hockey Blue Gold game Sunday afternoon. Finally, with the teams tied at five apiece in the first round of a sudden death shootout, freshman Cory McLean was able to put one past Blue goalie Tony Zasowski to give the Gold a 6-5 win. The game, played to raise money for the Coaches' Foundation, raised $1,250 for cancer research. Each player played the game for someone they knew who had cancer. Play was slow at the beginning, with both the Blue and Gold teams getting bogged down in the offensive zone. That trend didn't last for long, especially with a slight rule change made by the Notre Dame coaches. To make the game more interesting for the fans, there were no penalties assessed. Instead, when a player committed a penalty, the opposing team was awarded a penalty shot. The first goal of the game came on a penalty shot by senior David Inman for the Blue squad 7:45 into the first period. Inman was able to get the puck past Gold goalie Jeremiah Kimento for the score.

There's a reason why some players get paid the big bucks, because when the game's on the line, you can count on them to deliver a huge goal. Some of these players stand out because they make an otherwise weak team competitive but others, though surrounded by other talent, still seem to shine when the pressure's on. Here are Faceoff.com's Ten Best NHL Gamebreakers. Every week, Faceoff.com's editors will feature its Ten Best. The list might include anything related to hockey from the Ten Best goalscorers of all-time to the Ten Best hockey coaches. You can post your comments in the SOUNDOFF! section beneath each week's list and see past lists by clicking the VIEW ARCHIVE link below.
