A TALE OF TWO TRADES I'll never forget that cold, wind-swept night in Connecticut early in the 1975-76 NHL season. I was riding my bicycle en route to a nice, warm cup of hot chocolate at my grandfather's house, and I heard a car approaching me. Turning my head, I saw my uncle driving by, and waved. Seeing me, he pulled to the side of the road and waited me to pedal up to him. Opening the window, he said to me, "The Rangers just traded Brad Park and Jean Ratelle." He handed me a New York Post EXTRA which had the headline and the story. I'll never forget how shocked I was. It was quite a deal, a blockbuster, and a last ditch attempt by the New York Rangers to change their fortunes, after a decade of coming close to, but not quite winning, the Stanley Cup. Park, Ratelle, and prospect Joe Zanussi were on their way to Boston. Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais were Manhattan bound. It was probably the NHL's biggest trade of the decade. Every so often, big trades like this one occur, and they send shock waves around the game. But there are a few other trades which don't send anything more than a few brief crackles across the news wires, and yet it is these trades that often produce the most lopsided deals.

Winningest coach in Rivermen history delivered the first title October 11, 2001 Pat Kelly's 209 wins are still the most by any coach in Peoria's hockey history. Kelly arrived in Year Two, taking over as head coach and general manager for the then-Prancers in 1983-84. He stayed through the '87-88 season and brought Peoria its first championship in 1984-85: "Everyone remembers that Game 7 win for the championship in Peoria and it may be the biggest moment in the franchise's history," said Kelly, 66. "But people don't know about Game 6 up in Muskegon. That really might have been bigger, because we were up 2-0 late in the third and they got a two-minute, two-man advantage. (Peoria goalie) Rick Heinz, just back from an injury, came up big for us there. We don't get that game, the drama of Game 7 in Peoria, the roses, the song, the sellout, it never happens." Speaking of that first league championship . . . Kelly, on the 1984-85 Turner Cup champion Peoria Rivermen: "We don't win that championship without (Rivermen Hall of Fame goaltender) Darrell May. We had two goalies hurt, and we found him down in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. He came in and played brilliantly, he saved us. That was one of many moves that went our way that year. We found (Defenseman of the Year and future NHL Blues) Lee Norwood in a bar up in Canada, looking for work. We traded Grant Rezansoff and Steve Harrison, two guys from the original Prancers teams the first two years, for defensemen Mark Botell and Rick Hendricks, and that put us over the top. Then we got Denis Cyr down from the Blues, and he was IHL Playoff MVP. That team was a bunch of kids making $300 a week. And I was prouder of them than any team I coached in my 24 years.
