Men's Hockey Falls to No. 4 New Hampshire Friars start Hockey East playoffs Thursday
March 6, 1998 PROVIDENCE, R.I. The fourth-ranked New Hampshire Wildcats defeated the Providence College Friars, 3-2, in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, March 6 at PC's Schneider Arena. Providence freshman Cole Gendreau opened the scoring with his first collegiate goal as he broke down the left wing and beat UNH goaltender Sean Matile through the five hole at 7:37 of the first period. UNH evened the game with 1:09 remaining in the first period when Rob Gagnon poked in a rebound. Derek Bekar tallied the only goal of the second period on a power play when he one-timed a shot past PC netminder Boyd Ballard 14 seconds into the period. Ballard kept the Wildcats in check for the remainder of the period posting 12 saves. Bekar registered his second goal of the game and what proved to be the gamewinner when he backhanded a shot past a sprawled Ballard at 13:08 of the third. PC pressured late in the game and got within one goal when Jon Cameron slid a low shot under Matile on a power play with 1:41 remaining in the game.

If ice hockey were poker, the the Wagner College ice hockey team drew four aces from January 17-20 as the skating Seahawks embarked on a four game sweep as they swept a weekend road trip by defeating Penn 9-5, Loyola (Md.) 8-2, CCM 8-3, and returned home to defeat Edinboro (Pa.) by a score of 10-0. The four game sweep saw the Seahawks outscore the opposition 35-10. While one might think that after threes games over three nights, plus travel, that the team would be tired and maybe let down against Edinboro. Well, they didn't. Seahawk captain Lou Weber scored the games first goal 13 seconds into the first period, and the Seahawks never looked back after that. Wagner RW J ohn Conevery , and centers Robert Giallombardo and Sean Gagnon also scored as the Seahawks led Edinboro 4-0 after the first period. Lou Weber John Conevery and Sean Gagnon scored their second goals of the game in the second period as the Seahawks led 7-0 after two periods. Seahawk RW Bill Williamson scored and C Jude Vanden-Heuvel scored twice in period three, as the Seahawks shutout Edinboro 10-0. Despite the lopsided score, this was a physical contest. Edinboro was a physical, hard checking team that has little talent.

Vermont's Martin St. Louis (1997), Tim Thomas (1997), and Eric Perrin (1997) were each named to this prestigious group. In addition to their countless ECAC accomplishments, all three Catamounts were Hobey Baker finalists who received all-American recognition. Harvard's remarkable trio consists of Peter Ciavaglia (1991), Ted Drury (1993), and Sean McCann (1994). Ciavaglia and Drury both took home ECAC Player of the Year honors during their senior campaigns, while all three became all-Americans and Hobey Baker finalists. Clarkson was the only other school that was able to obtain more than one position on the All-Decade Team. Todd White (1997) and Brian Mueller (1995) were both first-team selections. The remaining members of this dream team include Rensselaer's Joe Juneau (1991), Yale's Ray Giroux (1998), Colgate's Mike Harder (1997), St. Lawrence's Daniel Laperriere (1992), and Union's Trevor Koenig (1998).

New York Rangers: Are They For Real?
by James Yoon
Eric Lindros hopes to make an impact this season. As we embark on yet another Nation Hockey League season, I’ve decided, yet again, to preview the New York Rangers. Of course, my eyes have cringed watching my favorite team in each of the last four seasons, but, this year, once again, I am optimistic for good times in the Garden. New general manager, Glen “Slats” Sather, restructured the team in the off-season by adding ten new players to the professional roster, while acquiring a variety of young, prospective talent. Sather has also cleared out those “washed out” veterans: Tim Taylor, Valeri Kamensky, Rich Pilon, and Adam Graves. Further, I have decided to analyze the team on a categorical basis.
Defense:
Bryan Berard returns to the NHL after sitting out most of last season.

This year of course, the team’s main concern is defense. The Rangers allowed a league-worst 290 goals in the 2000-01 campaign. Sather has fully addressed the issue over the off-season. Newly acquired Darren Van Impe, Igor Ulanov, David Karpa, and Sean Gagnon should bring a veteran presence and fortify one of the weakest blue lines of all time. Brian Leetch, Sylvain Lefebrve, Vladimir Malakhov, and a young Peter Smrek augment speed and puck-moving ability to the size and toughness provided by the new veterans. The offensive defenseman, Kim Johnsson, of course, was given away in the trade for Eric Lindros, but Sather has enough faith in his younger players, Filip Novak and Tomas Kloucek, to step up in the near future. Look for the former porous Rangers’ defense to tighten up this year and keep the goals against total closer to 200.
