    Flyers Sow Their Oates
    BY: Anthony Mingioni
    March 20, 2002
    - One night after potentially losing their top two centers for at least a week, the Philadelphia Flyers pulled the trigger on a major deadline deal, acquiring NHL assist leader Adam Oates from the Washington Capitals.
With Jeremy Roenick out two to four weeks with a hyperextended right knee and Keith Primeau sidelined for at least a week with bruised ribs in Monday night's 3-3 tie with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Flyers' general manager Bob Clarke made a move to help the Flyers stay ahead of the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Ottawa Senators in the race for first place in the Eastern Conference. In Oates, the Flyers acquire one of the premier playmakers in the league. Oates was the Capitals' top scorer with 68 points in 66 games and the league leader in assists with 58. He led the league in assists last season with 69.
"I've got mixed feelings about moving," Oates said at a Capitals practice after learning of the trade. "I've spent five years here and have a lot of memories, but the team I'm going to is a good one."
A better one, now that Oates is on board, according to Clarke.

    Halko Hockey 101
Steven Halko seems more like a
    teacher than a dominant
defenseman. He has all of his teeth. He can complete a sentence. He wears glasses most of the time. Nobody mumbles dumb jock jokes when Halko walks into a classroom. Unlike most of his teammates, he doesn't wear his nice Nike sweats or Michigan athletic gear to stand out on campus. "Some people, even after I've known them for awhile, don't know I'm on the hockey team," Halko says. "That gives me as much pride as anything else. I've talked to people who don't have a good image of athletes, and I try to show that I can challenge myself (academically)." Halko could be your lab partner or the guy who sits a couple rows in front of you in your history lecture. He wants to teach math some day. He's just another student who is quietly working his way through school. You might even ask to borrow his notes, forgetting that he's an athlete, someone you'd probably expect to skip class. But Steven Halko doesn't skip. Not classes. Not hockey games. Halko, a senior, rarely misses a lecture even the ones at 8:30 in the morning and he never sits out of competition.

Even though skaters needn't be protected for their first five seasons and goalies for six, depending on how many IVHL games they play, it will leave some well-known players available. Draft: Another Golden Era?
    by Adam Wodon /Columnist
College Players in the NHL Draft
    Year 1st Rd. Top 10
College hockey will get some additional notoriety in this year's draft, thanks to the likely early selection of Wisconsin's Dany Heatley and Boston University's Rick DiPietro. Since its inception in 1969, Michigan State's Joe Murphy (1986) is the only college player to be selected No. 1 overall in the NHL Draft. That fell near the beginning of college hockey's last golden age, 1985-92, when the effects of the U.S. win in the 1980 Olympics first started to be felt. There has also only been one other occasion where two college players were taken in the first five picks. That came in 1991, when Boston University's Scott Lachance went No. 4 and Michigan's Aaron Ward was taken No. 5. Remarkably, it was not until 1979 that any U.S. college player was taken in the first round. That was the realm of Canadian Major Junior players to near 100 percent exclusivity until Minnesota's Mike Ramsey was taken No. 11 by Buffalo. Before 1979, college players started to sprinkle into the second round, starting with Denver's Bruce Affleck in 1974, who was taken one pick ahead of future Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier. There were no No. 1 college picks in 1980 and 1981, then came a three-year stretch of just one each: Wisconsin's Pat Flatley (21), New Hampshire's Norm Lacombe (10) and BU's David Quinn (13).

Saskatoon Snipers News 02/18/02 - After 42 games in their inaugural CSHA season, the Snipers record is 16-24-2, 34 pts, 5th in the Central Division. It has been, as expected, a frustrating season so far for the Saskatoon fans who are used to a winning team. However, but for a recent slump, the Snipers were actually playing close to .500 hockey. GM David Kehler has been uncharacteristically burning up the phone lines during the first half of the season, making several trades in an effort to reach the team's stated goal of a playoff spot. However, the Snipers have struggled offensively and have received mostly shaky goaltending from Chris Osgood. If Osgood picks up his play in the 2nd half and if players like Shawn McEachern can start putting up the kind of offensive numbers they are capable of, the playoffs could still be a possibility. But the team will need to turn it around quickly or they could be out of the race early. 02/16/02 - The Saskatoon Snipers have scheduled a press conference for 1:00 pm CST today. The Saskatoon Press has learned that it will be announced that superstar Mario Lemieux has been traded in a blockbuster deal to the Thunder Bay Beachcombers in exchange for young forwards Jochen Hecht and John Madden. It would seem that Saskatoon is looking to get younger with this deal. Hecht is an extremely talented young player with loads of scoring potential and Madden is one of the best young defensive forwards in the CSHA and an outstanding penalty killer.
