Vancouver Canucks History 1995-1996: A new arena, a new sniper, a new hope? The re-unification of Russian superstars Pavel Bure (left) and Alex Mogilny excited many Canucks fans. The summer of 1995 was an exciting time for Canucks fans. First of all, there was the anticipation of moving into the brand new, state-of-the-art, downtown arena: General Motors Place. More excitement came on draft day, when the Canucks traded the gritty, up-and-coming Mike Peca, C Mike Wilson, and a draft pick (Jay McKee) for RW Alexander Mogilny . Though fans were forlorn at the loss of Peca, the thought of re-uniting Bure with his former Soviet linemate drove season-ticket sales to an unprecedented level. John McCaw had now obtained majority control of the team and the Mogilny acquisition indicated that he was willing to pay big money for big stars. McCaw's new empire, which included the Canucks, the NBA Grizzlies, and GM Place, was named Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and Steve Bellringer was hired as President. General Motors Place, home of the Canucks and NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies, opened for business in 1995.

T he bad new for Syracuse is they are still in last place in the Empire Division. The good news is that, after a fourteen-game stretch against only division rivals that began October 25, the Syracuse Crunch finally have some wins to brag about. Syracuse appeared to be mirroring the misfortunes of one of their parent clubs, the Vancouver Canucks. Before the run started, Syracuse had just one win, an opening night 8-6 victory against the Philadelphia Phantoms. Immediately after that, the Crunch tied a franchise record with a ten-game winless streak, and set a frachise record losing streak of seven games, that extended into the Empire Division run. Syracuse began the season with two rookie prospects in goal, Tom Keyes and Jean-Sebastian Aubin, and a number of new players from the Canucks and Penguins organizations that had never played together before. A slow start may have been expected in Syracuse, but this was worse than expected. At the beginning of the run, goaltender Corey Hirsch joined the Crunch. Hirsch was touted as a true NHL-quality goaltender, but he was rusty from his hold-out with the Canucks, and it showed. He struggled through his first three games, allowing a total of 16 goals in three straight losses. The team's leading scorer, defenseman Sven Butenschon, was called up by the Canucks, and key injuries, like the bad disk in Brian Bonin's back, kept key players out of the line-up. There didn't seem to be any answeres in Syracuse, and the team's record dwindled to a meager 1-8-2.

The netminder dominated the AHL in his first professional season, going 35-4-5 with a 2.78 goals-against average in 1992-93. Hirsch earned his first NHL call-up that season and went 1-2-1 in four games. In 1994, Hirsch backstopped Team Canada to a sliver medal at the Olympic Games. He spent two more years in the Rangers' system before being dealt to the Vancouver Canucks for Nathan Lafayette in 1995. Hirsch saw his first significant amount of NHL playing time with Vancouver in 1995-96, when he went 17-14-6 with a 2.93 GAA in 41 games. Until today, Sweden had never won the hockey gold medal at the Winter Olympics and Canada, the cradle of the sport, hasn't seized one in 42 years. But somehow, rather than succumb to the pressure or wilt from desire, the two teams played a hockey game for the ages through 60 throat-constricting minutes of regulation, and the 10-minute overtime, and that heart-stopping shootout that was ended on the seventh go-round by a kid center named Peter Forsberg, who spends much of his time insisting he'd rather pass than score.
