He began his pro career with the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL) in 1996-97 and was the sixth leading scorer with 14 goals and 34 points in 73 games and ranked fifth in penalty minutes (PIM) with 179. Georges made his NHL debut with Edmonton in 1997-98, playing in 11 games and was scoreless with 59 PIM. He then split the 1998-99 season between Edmonton and Hamilton scoring three goals and tallying five points and 57 PIM in 39 games. He scored his first Oilers/NHL career goal on Jan. 7/99 at Phoenix. In the 1999-00 season, Laraque was selected as the Oilers most popular player by Edmonton hockey fans. That year, he played his first full season with the Oilers and enjoyed his most productive season establishing single season highs for games (76), goals (8), assists(8), points(16) and PIM (123). First of all, his powerful 6-foot-3, 250-pound frame seems far more suited to knocking heads on the gridiron than on the ice surface. And second, he is a black athlete from French Canada, a player profile that had never previously been listed in the National Hockey League. Add in the difficulty he had skating as a youngster, and you can see why Laraque nearly accepted a U.S. college football scholarship offer after his first season playing major junior hockey in Quebec. "That first year was such a struggle for me," the Edmonton Oilers right winger remembered about his debut with the St.-Jean Lynx in 1993. "I didn't have a horrible year I mean I had like 20 points (22 actually) but I saw the difference between me and the other players in that league was huge." So huge, in fact, that Laraque wasn't even considered a longshot prospect. It would have been the perfect time to shrug his shoulders, say he gave it his best shot and move on to a game at which he excelled.

The linesmen in this game also broke up a what would have been Georges Laraque pummuling vs Aaron Downey before it started. However, something needs to be done about this officiating. Because the league cannot be embarrased like this anymore. It wasn't just last night, it's every night. These guys don't know when to call a dive, don't know if there patner is calling what, it's ridiculous. If I'm Gary Bettman, I can do one of two things. The first one is go back to the one man, system like most of the players seem to want. The second is to get more of an understanding going in the two man system. The lead offical should call all the things deep in there zone, and the back one should call the stuff behind the plays (like in basketball). Too many times you'll get the back offical calling a penatly, when his partner was right in front of what happend, and had deemed it wasn't a penalty. Another thing they have to do (but correct me if they have done it this season, I haven't noticed) is have officiating crews (like in the NFL). Let these refs get a feel for one and other and then will get to know what their partner is thinking(and that goes for linesmen being in that crew too).
