Doh! John LeClair is really a Homer at heart
Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday January 15, 2000 12:01 AM John LeClair was the pride of St. Albans, Vermont, even before he became the first American-born player to score 50 goals in three consecutive seasons. After scoring came to a league-wide halt last season, LeClair is back on pace to break 50 again this year ... which just might get him that guest spot on "The Simpsons" he may or may not be seeking. 1. Sports Illustrated named you the fourth greatest athlete out of Vermont: Can you name the top three? I can name the sports, but I can't think of the names off-hand. I'm sorry, I can't. 2. If Vermont and New Hampshire were to engage in a border war, who would win? Definitely Vermont. Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. That tradition continues on.

John LeClair gives ultimatum to Flyers
Click here for more on this story Latest: Friday September 08, 2000 12:32 PM John LeClair scored 40 goals and had 37 assists for Philadelphia last year. Donald Miralle/Allsport PHILADELPHIA (AP) John LeClair has given the Philadelphia Flyers a deadline of midnight Sunday to reach an agreement on his multiyear contract. LeClair, the NHL's leading goal scorer over the past five seasons, says he won't negotiate during the season nor sign a deal during the free-agency period afterward. That means the Flyers might be forced to trade LeClair if the two sides don't resolve differences this weekend. "Enough's enough," said LeClair, who has been on the team since arriving in a 1995 trade with Montreal. "There's been enough time for negotiating. Everything's got to come to an end or it just keeps dragging, gets worse." Contract talks broke off Wednesday, a development that Flyers chairman Ed Snider called "ominous."

  • John LeClair Position: Forward Shoots: Left Height: Weight: Birthdate: July 5, 1969 Birthplace: St. Albans, Vermont HOCKEY BIOGRAPHY Few individuals have meant as much to hockey in the state of Vermont as LeClair, who was the first Vermont native to play in the NHL. Born and raised in St. Albans, he attended hometown Bellows Free Academy, where he scored 84 points in 23 games as a senior. Those numbers impressed the Montreal Canadiens, who drafted him 33rd overall, in 1987. Loyal to his state, LeClair opted to play his college hockey with the Catamounts, and earned second-team ECAC honors as a senior at UVM. After his final season, he jumped to the Canadiens and became an NHL regular the following year. He showed his star potential in helping Montreal win the Stanley Cup in 1993, but it wasn't until a 1995 trade to Philadelphia that LeClair came into his own. With the Flyers, he put together three straight 50-goal seasons and became a perennial NHL All-Star. LOOKING BACK LeClair had to make a tough choice following his final season at the University of Vermont. He knew he could delay his professional career and play for the U.S. Olympic team the next year, but the Montreal Canadiens wanted him right away. Although professional players were allowed to play in the 1992 Olympics, the NHL had not yet entered the fray, meaning that LeClair wouldn't be available to the Olympic team that season. Although he therefore missed his chance to go to Albertville, France, LeClair caught a break a few years later when the NHL made his Olympic dreams come true by allowing its stars to take part in the Games.

Special to USAHockey.com Face John LeClair in a hockey rink and he will glare into your eyes. Battle him in front of the net and he will fight you blade to blade, completely unwilling to relinquish any of the ice that he believes to be his own. LeClair may combat you eye to eye, but not tooth for tooth. He’s not that type of guy. A tooth for a goal is more his thing. Brush up on your German and ask the boys from Hamburg. When Team USA faced the Germans during the Salt Lake City Olympics in February, LeClair’s face absorbed a high stick halfway through the first period. With a tooth knocked out and a lip in need of stitches, LeClair retreated to the training room.
John LeClair showed grit and determination in Salt Lake.
