Shinny Gives the Golden Finger (and that's a good thing) to... Claude LeMieux of the Colorado Avalanche Yep, you heard that right! The latest recipient of the coveted Golden Finger is the oft-disparaged Claude LeMieux. Particularly disliked by Red Wing fans, the nasty Claude spent some time in an interesting way prior to the recent Avs-Wing match-up in Denver. Claude had heard about 12 year old Brittany Lamb, seriously injured in a head-on auto accident which killed her aunt. Brittany, a fervent LeMieux fan who named her cat after the player, endured six hours of surgery. Doctors considered it a miracle that she survived. Claude waited by Brittany's bedside until she woke up from surgery, and he was there when she opened her eyes. "She looked up at me," Claude said. "I think she knew I was there. I was just trying to do my part. We all need to do something. It meant a lot more to me than a hockey game." LeMieux has a handicapped brother and is involved in a lot of charity work. And when he left Brittany's side and reported for the game which ended up a 2-2 tie between the two arch rivals, you can bet he had that little girl on his mind. (And by the way, he assisted on the game-tying goal with 2:14 left in regulation). It's just another reminder that hockey players across the leaguethe "mean" players as well as the Lady Byng winnersare a big-hearted bunch. (AP) The Phoenix Coyotes traded veteran right wing Claude Lemieux to the Dallas Stars on Thursday for left wing Scott Pellerin and a conditional pick in the 2004 draft. Lemieux, 37, had just six goals and eight assists in 36 games this season but missed nine games with a fractured foot. Lemieux signed with the Coyotes as a free agent in December 2000 after stops in Montreal, New Jersey and Colorado playing on four Stanley Cup championship teams along the way. "Claude adds experience, depth and versatility to our forward group," Dallas general manager Doug Armstrong said. "He is a proven winner who has a postseason resume that speaks for itself. We feel he will make an immediate impact for our organization." It was believed Lemieux's $3.1 million salary was a contributing factor for the cash-strapped Coyotes but general manager Mike Barnett did not immediately return calls about the trade. "I know Claude and his family love it here in Phoenix, but this is an opportunity for him to go to Dallas and possibly win another Stanley Cup," Coyotes coach Bob Francis said.
